Works well enough

ASUS Eee PC 1005HAB-RBLU005S Midnight Blue Intel Atom N270(1.60 GHz) 10.1" 1GB DDR2 Memory 160GB HDD Netbook
ASUS Eee PC 1005HAB-RBLU005S Midnight Blue Intel Atom N270(1.60 GHz) 10.1" 1GB DDR2 Memory 160GB HDD Netbook

Pros: -Small -Light -Powerful enough to run 4-5 basic operations at once, like Firefox, Pidgin, Nicotine+, music, and a zsh terminal; if you need to do more intensive stuff then get a real laptop -Says it should get 8 hours, but gets closer to 5 with full use, which is, all things considered, plenty -10 inch screen, surprisingly well lit -Decent sized HDD -Works fine for a refurb

Cons: -Keyboard is a little flimsy and makes pretty a pretty loud clacking sound -slightly raised/pinched keyboard by the p/0/backspace/= keys, though they work fine when pressed -Plastic around the keyboard/screen is a fingerprint magnet -Can run kind of hot and needs decent ventilation -Windows Starter is a joke, should be called Windows Bottom Barrel

Overall Review: Ubuntu netbook remix works well right out of the box. A lot of talk is about upgrading to the 2 gig SO-DIMM, but Ubuntu netbook gets enough done so I may forgo the upgrade. It's not blazing but it's acceptable as is. If I got the 2 gig I'd probably run full-on Ubuntu; the Netbook remix makes sense on the 8 inch screens, but the 10 inch has enough real estate to make a full-on distro possible. Also, keep in mind that it's a refurb--I stress tested mine immediately out of the box, as the return window is fairly short; prime95 and memtest86 have never failed find weaknesses. Also, Newegg got it to me quick, as usual.

Most Critical Review

It's decent, but not a homerun.

Everki Black 17" Swift Light Laptop Backpack Model EKP116NBK
Everki Black 17" Swift Light Laptop Backpack Model EKP116NBK

Pros: It's simple. It's built sturdy and has a decent amount of padding. The outside seems like it would be water-resistant, though I have yet to test that particular feature. The straps are comfy enough, I guess. I also like the colors.

Cons: Much smaller than it looks. Only one "main" pocket, which is big enough to hold a laptop and a few odds and ends, but it's not a huge space. All of the other, secondary pockets seem geared to hold smaller stuff, incidentals and the like. The laptop is held in place with a sleeve; this works fine for larger laptops but may cause problems if you have a smaller laptop, as it may end up shifting or bouncing around.

Overall Review: Holds my T-series ThinkPad, two average sized-O'reilly books, and a few odds and ends (pens, ethernet cable) with no issue. It couldn't take two full-sized college textbooks, not with a laptop in there, anyways.

I like it

ThinkPad Laptop Edge Intel Core i3-2310M 4GB Memory 320GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 3000 14.0" Windows 7 Professional 64-bit E420s (440129U)
ThinkPad Laptop Edge Intel Core i3-2310M 4GB Memory 320GB HDD Intel HD Graphics 3000 14.0" Windows 7 Professional 64-bit E420s (440129U)

Pros: - Considerably faster than expected; higher Windows Experience Score than I would have guessed (4.8) - Robust build but still rather light compared the other laptops I've had. - Windows 7 Professional 64-bit - ThinkVantage software isn't bad. Nothing special, but it has its uses (e.g. built-in hardware/stress testing). - Monitor is crisp + bright

Cons: - Lenovo tech support is hit or miss - No ThinkLight; I'd rather have the light than a webcam - ThinkVantage software is clunky out of the box and needs to be customized/pruned - While not as bad as other laptops I've used, still something of a fingerprint magnet. - Integrated graphics -- enough said - Weak speakers

Overall Review: Got this as an "open box" special off the Egg. Definitely gets 5 Eggs at the price that I paid. That said, I don't know if I'd pay for it at the full price. It's a fine laptop, but you're paying for the robust construction, the brandname, and the specialty software as opposed to a more powerful CPU or RAM. This is a business laptop, and if you don't need a laptop just for business, you're better off with a Lenovo U/Y/Z series.

Subtle changes from Fallout 3

Fallout: New Vegas PlayStation 3
Fallout: New Vegas PlayStation 3

Pros: -Great storyline, plot, and characters -Mostly based off of, at least in the plot sense, the failed Van Buren project; we get to see what might have been -Same basic gameplay and strategies as Fallout 3 -Far more choice in regards to siding with the good guys/bad guys or staying neutral -More locations -Far more variable endings -Feels more balanced -Solid voice actors (ex: Wayne Newton, Michael Hogan, Matthew Perry) -Cowboys, dude, cowboys.

Cons: -Crashes. Seriously, the first day I owned the game it crashed twice. Went down at least 4-5 times since then. Save early, save often, 'cuz it dies a lot. -Buggy. Even without the crashes stuff randomly screws up, weapons degrade faster than they should, companions get stuck or disappear, and you fast travel then spawn in mid-air. The most recent patch fixed the worst of it, but weird stuff still happens. -Many of the factions are non-essential or don't serve any purpose outside of quests serving other factions. Lame. -Uses the exact same graphics/locations/random items as Fallout 3, so expect to spend a lot of time scrounging ashtrays out of filing cabinets in the same ruined offices as in the DC Wasteland.

Overall Review: There are a bunch of small, but important changes from Fallout 3: -Fewer skill points awarded per level -No bobble heads for free stat increases -Perks only every 2 levels, many with high skill requirements which force you to specialize more -Companions can't die and get decent bonuses if your PC has high charisma -Far more emphasis on caps/money and being able to purchase top notch gear -Luck is more important, esp. with regard to gambling -Fewer hard/very hard hacks or lockpicks, more of a bell-curve thing, with most being average difficulty -Way more non-combat skill checks, esp. speech and barter -Same-gender equivalents to ladykiller/black widow, meaning that you can now have a PC who is bi/not straight -Armor and DR is done a little differently and is less affected by the guns skill and more by penetrating power, necessitating different types of ammo -Survival and handloading options, allowing you to craft your own food and ammo; brahman wellington, anyone?

Good for what it does

Lenovo Laptop IdeaPad Intel Pentium SU4100 3GB Memory 250GB HDD Intel GMA 4500MHD 13.3" Windows 7 Home Premium U350(29634GU)
Lenovo Laptop IdeaPad Intel Pentium SU4100 3GB Memory 250GB HDD Intel GMA 4500MHD 13.3" Windows 7 Home Premium U350(29634GU)

Pros: -ThinkPad/IdeaPad brand reputation -Crisp display that's larger than a Netbook -Long battery life -Light, easy to move around -USB ports on both sides -No issues under Ubuntu 10.04

Cons: -No CD/DVD-rom drive; I thought I wouldn't need one, but there are times when it is a lifesaver -Screen + border around the screen love fingerprints -Fan makes a lot of noise if laptop is turned at an angle -No dedicated graphics

Overall Review: Boss ordered me this as a work laptop (off of Newegg, mind you). It's a nice computer, but I could have gotten much of the functionality, albeit at slower speeds, from a netbook. Still, I'm not complaining....

Simple and fun

Metroid: Other M Wii Game
Metroid: Other M Wii Game

Pros: Similar enough feel to Super Metroid, which it follows, plot-wise. Cool levels, and atmospherics that capture the feel perfectly. The challenge level scales well, and there are enough save points scattered about to make it easy to quit without losing a lot of time; a good choice for casual gaming. I also like how they changed the missile/super missile/power bomb scheme to a recharging format. And, of course, Samus is still hot.

Cons: The control are...annoying. The Horizontal-to-Vertical transition to go into 1st person is a lot slower than I would have hoped; it's a problem in certain fights. It would have been nice if they had support for the classic controller. My real beef is that the plot is weak and the characters are bland. Some stuff is really, really cheesy; we're talking like cringe-worthy here. Not that there was ever a lot of plot in the old-school Metroids, mind you, but this one makes you sit through it. Lastly, there are certain situations which aren't especially intuitive, and tend to require lots of trial and error, or lots and lots of 1st person searching to finally get past. These were mostly minor things, but it's still annoying when you spend 20 min searching a room for a tiny crack that you can only see in 1st person, and only when you're right next to it.

Overall Review: I borrowed this from a friend after he finished it (he bought it from Newegg, lol). It was kind of cheesy and frustrating at first, but it grew on me. The controls, in particular, took some time to get up to speed.
