Good investment for someone who doesn't upgrade their card all the time

EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card 256-P2-N761-AR
EVGA GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card 256-P2-N761-AR

Pros: -Good price (especially with a rebate). -DirectX 10 capability, even if it isn't fancy, hopefully makes this card a bit longer-lasting than a DirectX 9 card. -EVGA has a clever deal where you can upgrade your card to a better one within 90 days and pay only the difference. We'll see if my wife lets me do that.

Cons: -Not as fancy or powerful as the 8800 GTS, which everyone seems to freaking love. But that one's too expensive for me.

Overall Review: If you're reading all of these reviews, I'm sure you've found that it's hard as hell to pick out a video card: given two similar cards, nobody agrees about which one is better. In my case, it was between this card and the Radeon X1950 Pro. I scoured forums to get a definitive answer on which was better and never found one; or rather, I could find answers to support either card, with plenty of technical evidence to back them up. There are such claims in this very review section. In the end, sort of threw my hands up and went with this card for the reasons listed above. Vista gives this card a performance index of 5.6 (of 5.9), for whatever that's worth.

Great hard drive

Western Digital Blue WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Big (for an average user), quiet, a better value (price/size) than the 250 gb model.

Cons: None so far.

Great bang for buck

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 2.6 GHz Socket AM2 89W Processor - ADA5200CSBOX

Pros: High performance for a great price.

Cons: Windows Vista gives it a performance index of 5.1/5.9. Dunno what that's worth, though.

Overall Review: I used Tomshardware.com for a performance chart on tons of different processors, then cross-checked that against the processors' prices on Newegg.

Nice and quiet

nMEDIAPC Mute Power MP-500 500 W ATX12V Power Supply
nMEDIAPC Mute Power MP-500 500 W ATX12V Power Supply

Pros: Quiet, burly enough to run a mid-level gaming machine, supposedly efficient and reliable.

Cons: Doesn't tell you the total combined amps on the +12V rails. I must claim ignorance on whether or not this is important.

Overall Review: This is my first build, and I went around and around about what PSU to get. There's a lot of good advice in Newegg's learning center, but one thing that gave me hell was trying to figure out the total amps on the +12V rails (which are listed as 15A and 18A, respectively). The learning center says that you can't necessarily just add the two numbers together to get the total, because the actual total might for some reason be less than that number. Yet the total is never listed in the specs for this PSU, anywhere. On top of that, the guy on my mobo's tech help line heard me say "15A on +12V1" and said that this PSU wouldn't work with my mobo (ASUS M2N). But he was kind of a yutz, and I didn't really believe him. In the end, I trusted reviews that said this PSU would work in a gaming system. It does so far.

Great drive

Pros: Cheap, quiet, reads everything thus far.

Cons: None yet.

Overall Review: Great choice if you're pinching pennies and/or already have a burner in your other home-network PC.

Great RAM

Kingston ValueRAM 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR667D2N5K2/2G

Pros: Runs great in my mid-level gaming system (AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz Processor, EVGA 256mb GeForce 8600GTS video card, Windows Vista Business 64-bit). I worried a bit about whether 2gb would be enough for the supposedly system-hogging Vista, but it runs great so far, and Vista gives it a performance index of 5.9/5.9 (for whatever that's worth).

Cons: None
