SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SL7-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C222 DDR3 1600
SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SL7-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C222 DDR3 1600

Pros: I am running four of these boards in 514 short depth 1u chassis. Four Intel Xeon E3-1230V3, with 16GB+ Crucial CT2KIT102472BD160B per host. They are a lab VSAN cluster. The LSI2308 SAS chip is HCL certified, simply goes in IT mode (use usb stick+efi). Runs great using HDPLEX 160W DC-ATX Power Supply, HDPLEX Internal 120W AC-DC adapter for each 1u Host. Supplies plenty/stable power, foreach running: Dual Gb-NIC, One Samsung 850pro (esxi/host-cache), One Intel DC S3700 Ent SSD, and 2x 3.5 Sam E.3 SAS/1TB/72k. North bridge heatsinks swapped with Enzotech BGA. Fully VSAN HCL and performs!

Cons: 24/7 99% cpu/load, and on all four hosts has not been verified. The Supermicro 1.42 IPMI firmware does bug out on graphical shell booted from any esxi boot volume (graphical corruption). So if you want a usable interface over iKVM/iPMI boot from non efi.

Overall Review: After each ESXi install go ahead an update to the latest LSI 9207 firmware using Vmware VIB LSI package/software. If you in IT mode (passthrough) keep it clean remove any boot roms, you don't need. Supermicro's IPMI is also unlockable allowing you to CLI bios changes, exports, imports, updates, etc. Without the SUM tool, the $20 unlock only provides the ability to flash the motherboard bios via the IPMI web interface. Go pro and link you motherboards bios to a git repo and subversion and script scheduled updates and upgrades. Granted the boards on my cluster has APC, PDU, and console servers on an OOB. |;)

TOSHIBA Satellite M4-S435 512MB Memory 14.1" 1400 x 1050 Tablet PC Windows XP Tablet PC Edition
TOSHIBA Satellite M4-S435 512MB Memory 14.1" 1400 x 1050 Tablet PC Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Pros: Excellent Speed, Great screen, Great all around stuff… I dropped two OCZ 1GIG sticks in and it hauls but! It is very loud running at full power, but full power is worth every DB. The wireless functions great! DVD burner functions very well on a variety of media.

Cons: -The ac adapter port/jack on the system stopped working after 2 weeks of the purchase. Now I have to get it replaced or something! And who knows if Toshiba will fix the problem. -The touchpad is absolute garbage! Most unresponsive touchpad I have ever used. Even with the latest Alps drivers and what not, its still junk. -The swivel for the screen seems very rickety. A always slightly moves into unlocked position in laptop mode. -A bunch of operating system stability compromising software comes standard. Figuring out what is what, and what should stay is a full time Job for the first week.

Overall Review: All in all i was very happy with the purchase, until the AC port stopped working. Getting it to charge has become an ordeal, and even running of AC! I would recommend this product to someone who is foolish enough to trust Toshiba's craftsmanship and quality control.

Great Value, Speed, SAS, VSAN

Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0023 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SAS 6Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate Constellation ES.3 ST1000NM0023 1TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SAS 6Gb/s 3.5" Enterprise Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 1TB, SAS, Price, Reliability, Multipath, 128MB cache, Cheap.

Cons: 3.5", 7200RPM and hot.

Overall Review: I have twelve of these running in a VSAN cluster of 4 hosts, three of these disks per host. Storage serves over 30 guests quickly and reliably.

DD-WRT

LINKSYS E3000 Wireless Router simultaneous Dual Band Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4GHz / 5GHz up to 300Mbps with USB Built-in UPnP AV Media Server
LINKSYS E3000 Wireless Router simultaneous Dual Band Gigabit 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4GHz / 5GHz up to 300Mbps with USB Built-in UPnP AV Media Server

Pros: DD-WRT firmware support, two radios, virtual adapters with DD-WRT, flawless design, excellent built in coverage. Did i mention DD-WRT?

Cons: Can get hot and no external antennas ports. USB over Samba is way slow, configuration is picky.

Overall Review: If you looking for the best apartment or small business access point this is golden with DD-WRT. Works much better than other AP's when OSX reconnects SMB shares after sleeping. Wheel now spins for 30 seconds, instead of maybe connecting after a minute. Make sure you choose a good channel for congested environments, scan and choose smart. 5ghz is great cause no one uses it, and or doesn't configure it past channel 13. Having owned and setup countless wireless access points, this is by far the best consumer model available. With DD-WRT you get inundated with features. I can't account for how decent DD-WRT uses NAT and other Firewall and Port features, its simply an AP for a Blackberry and MacBook Pro. BB@802b, MBP@802n. Thank you Newegg and DD-WRT, and thank you SSH you are my best friend.

Awesome Sauce

VIZO ARS-250 Stainless & Plastic 2.5" SATA SATA Dual Drive Rack
VIZO ARS-250 Stainless & Plastic 2.5" SATA SATA Dual Drive Rack

Pros: Very well built. Very well though out. The eject trays spit the drives out the perfect amount. And its very cool to look at. Allows you to make use of those empty floppy and ever so elusive 5" bays! They are just so clean and pretty. As for use well its great. Never worry that there is a cable snag and one of your RAID 0 SSDs looses power. And quickly easy run backups/clones to new SSD drives.

Cons: Not completely aluminum. I like aluminum, makes things feel space age. Moreover this is a flat out cool product, which means i would have paid more for it. Also the power hookups for each tray on the device is MOLEX, is should be SATA Power. PEOPLE HATE MOLEX, its bad always has been always will!

Overall Review: Its sometimes hard to find suitable positions for 2.5" form factor drives. So why not give them a home? Instead of placed all shadedly against some part of your case. Moreover these should be more like floppy drives. They say they have a 4 drive 5" bay.

Another Note

Linksys WRT160N Wireless Broadband Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps/ 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port x4
Linksys WRT160N Wireless Broadband Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps/ 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Port x4

Pros: These devices work great for people needing multiple wifi spots. Dd-wrt and these devices provide perfect handoff between multiple units. Complete coverage to an office space or high bewilderment home, without paying for ugly difficult to mount decent antennas. You can even authenticate against a RADIUS server.

Cons: Doesn't have antenna connectors... Not a problem considering how relatively cheap it is compared the a decent antenna solution. The newer models have more built in antennas.

Overall Review: If you looking todo something cheap and good. Put these in at a company provide excellent coverage all over. They even work swimmingly well in Mac environments. Make sure you actually configure your channel. Its amazing how many people don't do a site survey before setting their wireless channel. I usually go for the cleanest channel with a clean channel above and below. I also use it to manage QoS for wireless traffic giving things like Voice, and Video a +1. Blackberry UMA For The Win.
