Most Favorable Review

Athena Mobile Rack MR-16TLAB, good trayless rack for 3.5" drives.

Athena Power MR-16TLAB 3.5" HDD Trayless Hot-Swap Mobile Rack Converts 1 x 5.25" to 1 x 3.5" SATA/SAS 6Gb/s HDD - Aluminum Cage & Bezel w/ Security Keylock & LED Indicator
Athena Power MR-16TLAB 3.5" HDD Trayless Hot-Swap Mobile Rack Converts 1 x 5.25" to 1 x 3.5" SATA/SAS 6Gb/s HDD - Aluminum Cage & Bezel w/ Security Keylock & LED Indicator

Pros: Sturdy, tight fitting in PC case, with LED activity indicators. Does not require a SATA power cable to 4-pin Molex adapter with an extra connector for the activity LEDs, like some other mobile racks do.

Cons: No documentation included, but that's only necessary if you don't know what the tiny Enable/Disable switch on the back is for (see "Other" comments below). The activity LEDs have a somewhat narrow viewing field, so if you are sitting close to and beside or above your PC case, you have to lean over to see the lights.

Overall Review: Appears to be a renamed AMS Venus rack Model DS-116TL, which I have, and they are good also. So far they've been quality items. Fan listed as optional, but availability not shown in the ad. Bare rack, no cables included. No 2.5"drive adapter included, but such can be obtained separately. The Enable/Disable rear switch on the rear is preset to Enable for the activity LEDs - the Disable position is only used for certain hard drives that do not send activity signals to the LEDs.

Most Critical Review

LG DVD drive GH24NSC0B - very loose fit SATA connector sockets, allowing cables to easily fall out.

LG Internal 24x Super Multi with M-DISC Support SATA Model GH24NSC0B
LG Internal 24x Super Multi with M-DISC Support SATA Model GH24NSC0B

Pros: Bare bones DVD drive that works. Would be worth more eggs if the connectors weren't so loose.

Cons: Both the SATA power and data connector sockets do not provide a tight fit for standard cables, so they will fall out at the slightest touch or vibration, especially the data cable.

Overall Review: These DVD drives really require the use of latching SATA data and power cables. I had to make an additional order for these to make the connections secure, thus raising the final price considerably. I would not recommend this model drive.

Linux versions of H&R Block tax software really needed.

H&R Block 2023 Deluxe Software - PC/Mac - Download
H&R Block 2023 Deluxe Software - PC/Mac - Download

Pros: Works, and E-file included. Saves having to struggle though IRS paper forms, which are now so complex that many people would have to hire a tax accountant to get through them.

Cons: Linux versions of this tax software are sorely needed because Microsoft Windows is getting impractical to use, requiring more expensive new computers and an unending string of time-consuming updates that don't always work. Soon there will no longer be support for Windows 10, and Windows 11 only installs on new computers made to run it. I don't intend to throw away my present good PCs just so I can I can run Windows 11 (and then even newer PCs for W12, W13, on and on? ). I hardly ever use Windows anymore, therefore, if H&R Block does not start making Linux versions, I will have to stop buying their tax programs.

Overall Review: Works, but with Windows 10 ending, who knows if in the future H&R Block will keep their software compatible with W10 machines? Linux versions are needed more and more, or at least versions that will run under WINE on Linux (WINE is a free compatibility layer for running Windows applications on Linux systems. Currently H&R Block tax software does not work under WINE).

Price reduction from Newegg made buy possible.

Overall Review: Fairly easy to use, but Newegg's reduced price made purchase possible.

BenQ GW2470ML monitor - budget with some shortcomings.

BenQ 23.8" 60 Hz VA LCD/LED Monitor 4ms (GTG) 1920 x 1080 D-Sub, DVI, HDMI GW2470ML
BenQ 23.8" 60 Hz VA LCD/LED Monitor 4ms (GTG) 1920 x 1080 D-Sub, DVI, HDMI GW2470ML

Pros: - Budget price - Bright enough - VA panel allows better contrast than TN - In Linux the open-source driver works, but there's no Linux driver update included on the BenQ Montor CD, only Windows 7-8-10 (no XP or Mac).

Cons: - With out-of-the-box default settings, colors are somewhat dull, faded looking, low contrast, especially with Low Blue Light settings and in videos. - Adjusting the color settings (Gamma, Color Temperature, Hue, Saturation) is a convoluted process - they are grayed out until you wade through several menus and find/select User Mode and then backtrack to Picture Mode. Even then the Gamma range is very limited, just 5 presets. - VA-type display panel seems to have a somewhat narrower than advertised viewing angle, so edges & corners lose some vibrancy as you move your head. - No DVI cable included, only VGA, HDMI, and power. - All included cables are shorter than usual by about 15 inches (38 cm) - in my setup they would not quite reach from desk to floor, so I had to get normal ones. - No height adjustment in stand.

Overall Review: For some people this may be a good budget monitor, OK for general use (not high-end gaming), but IMHO the color settings are harder to find than necessary and somewhat limited. The monitor's default firmware menus show only brightness, contrast, sharpness, some low blue light settings and default environment settings which vary brightness. As a result, with default settings, while some graphics (eg: non-photo quality screen wallpaper) might look OK, colors in photos & videos may be notably washed-out looking, grayish, lacking in contrast and vibrancy. The software color adjustments in your particular Windows/Linux operating systems & graphics drivers may or may not help compensate for those built into the monitor, but I could not achieve good color balance with 3rd party calibration software like Calibrize.

ADATA SU650 SSD, 240 GB, works but no SSD Toolbox for Linux

ADATA Ultimate SU650 2.5" 240GB SATA III 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ASU650SS-240GT-C
ADATA Ultimate SU650 2.5" 240GB SATA III 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) ASU650SS-240GT-C

Pros: So far so good. Linux installs and runs OK. Website has links for downloading ADATA SSD Toolbox for Windows and user guide, plus an Acronis disk migration tool.

Cons: Unlike some other manufacturers, unless it's hidden somewhere ADATA does not provide a Linux-compatible SSD Toolbox, and their Windows version does not function under the Wine compatibility tool. So, for optimizing write wear and using TRIM and other drive tools in Linux, you have to search the Web for help with phrases like: "How to optimize your Solid State Drive for Linux Mint 18.x, Ubuntu 16.04 and Debian".

Overall Review: Would I recommend it? Well, it's faster than a mechanical drive, and the 240 GB size is suitable for testing/running small installations; however, unless you have a need for the bit of saved time, the price per gigabyte for SSD's still makes spinning HD's more soothing economically. Personally, I find the lack of a Linux-compatible SSD Toolbox to be a serious shortcoming in this day and age.

Faulty NOCO G3500 battery charger, no answer from their support.

Intermittent charging malfunction, wrote repeatedly to their support but never got answered, just a case number that was left hanging. Later another problem occurred - a status LED burned out, so the state of charge cannot be easily determined. These problems happened in the 5 year 'limited' warranty period, but starting half way through that time you have to pay them to fix it, plus the cost to ship it to them, thus largely negating the value of the warranty.

Works but no customer support, user guide or cables.

Would have been 4 or 5 stars if Sedna Support answered queries. The 2 eSATA ports work OK, but apparently there has been a change to the circuit board since it first came out - now there is a 10-pin header (9 pins present) labelled J2 but there is no documentation for it, either online or in the box. If jumpers were to be added it seems to connect some pins in parallel on the 2 eSATA ports. Sedna Support did not reply to multiple requests for information. About the front power ports - other users have complained that they were not the standard size for 4-pin Molex connectors, but mine are the right size. Other thoughts: It would be more useful if it also included one or 2 USB ports. And cables - remember when cables used to be included with new devices of this types? Not now, evidently.
