Awesome 1U system

SUPERMICRO SYS-6015B-TB 1U Rackmount Barebone Server Dual LGA 771 Intel 5000P DDRII 667/533
SUPERMICRO SYS-6015B-TB 1U Rackmount Barebone Server Dual LGA 771 Intel 5000P DDRII 667/533

Pros: Not much to complain about with this. Works like a dream with 2x quad core Xeons and 8GB RAM under Fedora.

Cons: Very noisy! Unless it's an isolated space, like a server room, you don't want one of these running near any ears.

Overall Review: I've built about a half dozen of these in the past year. They're easy to assemble and perfect for sticking in a server room where you don't mind the noise.

Nice little box

APEX MJ-16 Black Steel Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case ATX12V SFX 250W Power Supply
APEX MJ-16 Black Steel Micro ATX Mini Tower Computer Case ATX12V SFX 250W Power Supply

Pros: Inexpensive solid case for a micro-ATX setup. I needed one that could support 2 hard drives and it handles them fine. Easy to assemble parts in it. 250W power supply seems to work fine (I did have to replace it in a second system I built with a more powerful graphics card).

Cons: The rear case fan is loud!

Overall Review: I actually stopped using the rear case fan, and the system temperature holds steady at about 35C no matter what I throw at it.

Nearly perfect

VMware Fusion (Old Version)
VMware Fusion (Old Version)

Pros: Works great to get not only Windows on a Mac, but also to virtualize Linux and other compatible operating systems. I use it primarily to run one game under XP Pro. I tried Parallels first, but my game didn't run on that.

Cons: Umm, it's not free?

Overall Review: The one game I bought this for causes all sorts of nasty lockups when I try to run it in Unity view, but Unity works seamlessly otherwise.

Slight problem with cabling, but otherwise great

areca ARC-1160 PCI-X 64bit/133MHz SATA II (3.0Gb/s) PCI-X to SATA II Controller Card

Pros: Does what it says, and is easy to configure and set up. I used it as a RAID 6 with 10x500GB disks in Fedora Core 7.

Cons: This is probably a critique of the SATA cable connector, but when plugging cables along the back side of the board, it's easy for them to slide out, especially when they are stacked one on top of another. I thought I had a bad disk once, but it was just an unplugged cable that slipped out of its connector.

Overall Review: Fortunately, it does background building and rebuilds, so you can work on the RAID array while it works behind the scenes. Otherwise, it will take all night to build them.

Amazing server chassis

SUPERMICRO SuperChassis CSE-836TQ-R800B Black 3U Rackmount Server Case 800W Redundant
SUPERMICRO SuperChassis CSE-836TQ-R800B Black 3U Rackmount Server Case 800W Redundant

Pros: Amazing box. Solid, robust, and perfect with a SuperMicro board (I used the X7DVL-E-O, NewEgg SKU: N82E16813182097). Redundant fans and power supplies.

Cons: Loud and heavy, but once you've installed it in a server room (where it's supposed to be), you can forget how loud and heavy it is. During the build and OS installation, it's easily heard across a large warehouse floor.

Overall Review: Even with the fans out, threading the cables to the SAS/SATA backplane is a bit of a challenge. There are lots of ways to poke your fingers and cut yourself, but, this is my go-to server chassis, especially when I need more than 4 HDDs.

Bang for the buck

Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Incredible performance, reliability, and price!

Cons: I've had two fail out of the ~50 I've purchased in the past year. Both times, they failed right out of the box (always from NewEgg), and I was able to easily replace them before installation. They're a bit noisy, but that's to be expected.

Overall Review: I'm not too worried about the failure rate I've had (~4%). Both failures were from the same batch, and I caught it right when I installed the drives. A year on, they're all humming along without problem, once they survive the first five minutes.
