Works but slow USB

D-Link Wireless AC 1200 Mbps Home Cloud App-Enabled Dual-Band Gigabit Router - DIR-850L
D-Link Wireless AC 1200 Mbps Home Cloud App-Enabled Dual-Band Gigabit Router - DIR-850L

Pros: Easy Wizard Setup. Connected with my ISP easily, and also had no issues attached off my D-Link DIR 655. Each box comes with it's own unique password. Wish it had a randomized network address too, but it's a step in the right direction. Also like the captcha on admin login. All the advanced network configuration settings we've come to know D-Link for, in a very familiar, easy to follow tabbed menu. USB port that EASILY allows an ultra simple NAS. JUST PLUG IN THE DRIVE, that's it. I strongly suggest adding the networked HDD to favorites or otherwise mapping the drive asap, see cons. I had no issues getting multiple videos streaming concurrently off the USB HDD. WPS works great. Firmware was very easy to upgrade from inside the admin manager, as it has a new version finder built into it. However, it was also easy to find and download from D-Link. The BIN file is zipped, and the BIN file is uploaded in the admin config manager web app. Nice to have options on this. SSD-LAN to SSD-LAN and to SSD-AC1200 did get about 100-110 MB/s (880 Mbps).

Cons: The USB port is USB 2.0 (480 Mb/s), it should be USB 3.0 !! No Status/Link LED lights on the LAN ports (or front). Using Wifi N or USB, I can only get 6-7 MB/s (48-56 Mb/s). I used 2 SSD drives, one in laptop using N network and one in desktop using LAN or N or G. I also tried using my NAS (45 MB/s HDD) to Wifi N and USB 3.0 external (85 MB/s) HDD to both LAN and Wifi N. I used 4 different types of N adapters and 2 G adapters. I upgraded the firmware from 1.03 to 1.05 beta, but no change in performance. By following other's advice, I changed the 2.4 GHz to "N only" and had a slight gain to 6.7 MB/s. Since most homes have mostly N cards, this low transfer speed thru 2.4 GHz Wifi is sure to be a problem. (see other thoughts) LAN to networked USB HDD was very slow, only about 3.2 MB/s. Networked HDD does not show up for Wifi users, but internet side NAS does. LAN users could access the networked HDD, but could not see the internet side resources. I'm fairly certain this is just a configuration issue, but it is how it works out of the box. I was able to use an inbound allow filter and routing rule to gain access to my NAS on the internet side of router. Also after a while, the network HDD drive stops showing up in file explorer on the local LAN. It DOES always show up as a media source, however, media player takes a long time to find the media once you add it to libraries, however, VLC and Media Monkey do not.

Overall Review: My D-Link 655 also has slow Wifi N, due to over-saturation of 2.4 GHz routers. Other than the slow transfer speed on it's USB and Wifi N, this router works perfectly in all regards. The Networked HDD icon often takes a long time to show up in Windows Network window, however, mapping the drive will eliminate this issue. Tip: enter 192.168.0.1\{usb hdd name}\ to map the drive in network explorer, where {usb hdd name} name of the drive in explorer were the drive hooked directly into your computer, example: 192.168.0.1\speedy I'd really rate it a 3.5 if I could, due to the value for the price. It's better than a 3, but not really a 4.

Works great, kind'a slow

Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Seagate Desktop HDD ST3000DM001 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 3 TB ... works great in my netgear Duo v2 NAS. I got it because it was on their QHL, and I prefer Seagate. Made in Thailand, glad to see this. Quality HDDs have returned. Drive is quiet, no clicking noise.

Cons: Unfortunately, this 3TB drive is SLOW. I'm only getting 30-35 MB/s read+write speeds. The 1.5TB green drive it's replacing was twice as fast. I also have the 2TB ST2000DM001, and it has read/write speeds around 100-120 MB/s.

Overall Review: I always want Huge storage that's also fast.

2nd stick works flawlessly

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Desktop Memory Model F4-3000C15S-16GVR
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Desktop Memory Model F4-3000C15S-16GVR

Pros: 2 sticks bought 6 months apart work together in dual channel flawlessly, tested with Win10 Memory Tester. used D.O.C.P. in BIOS to get 3000 speed and timings. Second fastest timings in 3000 MHz RAM. Lifetime Warranty !

Cons: Newegg keeps selling out on this stuff. Otherwise, no cons.

Overall Review: Will likely buy a 3rd 16 GB stick.

It Does 1920 x 1200 !

EnLabs CNHDFVGAMBK Active 1080P HDMI-compatible Female to VGA Male Converter Adapter Dongle with 3.5mm Stereo Audio portable HDMI-compatible Connector for Laptop PC PS3 Xbox STB Blu-ray DVD TV Stick
EnLabs CNHDFVGAMBK Active 1080P HDMI-compatible Female to VGA Male Converter Adapter Dongle with 3.5mm Stereo Audio portable HDMI-compatible Connector for Laptop PC PS3 Xbox STB Blu-ray DVD TV Stick

Pros: Connected to the VGA input of Hanns-G HG281D monitor that is 1920 x 1200 and it will do full resolution if selected for it in OS. I had no issues on Linux Mint 18.3. The audio also works great ! BTW: the audio cable is 16" long.

Cons: will not knock an egg over it, but the screw lock downs holding the VGA in are hard to grip due to the shape of the adapter. I don't see a solution for this, so it's as good as it's going to get. Use pliers to turn the screws.

Overall Review: Highly Recommend this adapter for older (VGA) monitors connecting to new desktop that don't have VGA, or if your monitor's HDMI input is dead, but the VGA input still works.

Perfect for Home Network

On Networks DSG005-199NAS Unmanaged 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch
On Networks DSG005-199NAS Unmanaged 5-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch

Pros: Full 125 MByte/s speed (gigabit), and handles/balances multiple simultaneous intensive requests well. Good ventilation holes, on sides not underneath. Value for the current sale price (5-24-2013) is a must buy for any small home network lacking a switch, or needing more ports on a router. Works right out of the box, no configurations, perfect for simple home network. I greatly prefer the LEDs on the front of a switch for home networks, as to monitor easily from my chair, no need to look at back of switch, however, this would be a con in a server room. Standard 12 volt plug from standard 12 volt adapter. Small foot print. Good fit on RJ-45 jacks. Reliable** !!

Cons: Like everyone has mentioned: Only Green and Blinking LEDs, no other color for slower network connections. Rear ports aren't numbered. Neither of these Cons are worth knocking a egg over, unless this switch were more $$$ than other switches without these cons.

Overall Review: Test equipment: Rosewill CAT 6 cables, Syba SD-EXP24010 gigabit express card, Several different Asus on-board gigabit Realtek NICs, Intel 330 series SATA III SSD, Sandisk Ultra SATA II SSD, gigabit NIC on NAS, Windows 7 x64 on Desktops and Notebook. I didn't have the issue of the switch moving around due to no rubber feet, it sits well behaved on top of my router. ** I've been running my systems thru this switch for about a week now without the slightest issue. Newegg also has an 8 port version of this same switch, if you need more ports than 5. Compare the current price with the competition at the time of purchase. Newegg, please keep the sale price going!

Eggxpert review - Good Hardware, mediocre software

BUFFALO MiniStation Extreme 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive HD-PZ1.0U3B Black
BUFFALO MiniStation Extreme 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" External Hard Drive HD-PZ1.0U3B Black

Pros: The actual Hardware I give 5 eggs to, the software gets 3 eggs, so 4 eggs overall. The drive does hold up to being dropped 60" onto a linoleum floor. The semi-attached mini-cable is handy, although short, but an extender cable is supplied. Physical stress tests : Rude Slap out of machine w/30" drop to linoleum floor : Survived !! 48" drop to linoleum floor (disconnected) : Survived !!! 60" drop to linoleum : Survived ! but mini-cable came out, and was then difficult to reconnect, as some minor damage did occur to the internal mini-USB 3 plug. The Encryption software is good. The TurboPC-Ex is good at speeding up reading smaller files(only!). Summary: A good value for the price. Durable, large, fast drive.

Cons: The Hardware only has minor cons. The thin edges (except one) are rounded, so the drive can't stand on edge. The mini-cable is very hard to remove without eventually causing the inner mini-USB3 plug damage. The mini-cable, although it has standard USB connector, has the inner one at a 90 degree angle down and runs length wise to the cable (see attached photo). In theory, a standard cable could be used, or used as a replacement, but the inner socket orientation effectively makes it a manufacturers only item. The Software, other than encryption, isn't worth dealing with. If you are going to use the software, like for the encryption feature, first Download the latest CD Image, which will be the newer version of what comes on the drive. The Downloaded DriveNavi.exe has file date of 11-30-2012 ... You will need The ACTUAL product model number, it is not what is on the box, or printed on the device, it's on a thin white sticker on the drive, under the mini-cable that starts out with the S/N (14 digit serial number), you'll also need to give the S/N. Once you know this the web site is easy to deal with. Encryption software FORMATS the entire drive !! Install this first before using drive !! no EJECT right click shortcut in File Explorer , and TurboPC-Ex replaces the standard Win7 copy dialog with a custom one, which lacks transfer speed. With and Without TurboPC-Ex tests show it only is worth something for READING SMALL FILES. The rest of what it claims is pure bunk! If you are going to use TurboPC, download the latest version, as it is slightly faster than what comes with the installer on the drive. Backup Utility does not backup System OS or Program files folders, nor OS root files. BU can be interval 1,3,6,12,24 hours or at schedule time(s) in 24 hr time 00:00 to 23:59 NOTE: only 3 times can be entered, and NO DATE, so times are everyday. BIG MINUS !! There is no means of telling BU what to include except whole drives, but then you can tell it what to exclude when the Exclude folders dialog comes up, which is confusing. You click the 'ADD' button to add one folder at a time to the exclude list, and one at a time can be a big time drain. Conclusion: BU software in mediocre at best. The BU files are uncompressed and accessible (a plus) ... BU utility software for restoration is competent. The installation, DriveNavi.exe puts a Drive-Navi folder on your desktop: Do not delete this without coping it somewhere safe. It gets rewritten to the drive after the format utility is complete. You can download the CD-Image from the site to replace it, if you did.

Changing Encrypt Mode and reset to default both format the drive ! Note: after scheduling backup, the first back is run. If scheduled BU overlaps the initial BU only one BU will run at a time. BU restore - Select folder/file icon in MAIN-Center panel then click Blue Restore Button or Blue Browse Button at bottom or right click folder icon. 'Browse' allows restoring to alternate folder, so navigate to new location (with new folder creation, if desired) and will restore to there, but gives no prompt, just BAM! and restores. Desktop/Sidebar Widget collapses to a thin grey strip on edge of desktop and can be moved to any of the four edges of desktop (plus) Eco manager will put the drive to sleep after a preset number of minutes. Simple and it works, but doesn't Windows put the drive to sleep on it's own? General notes: Note: no EJECT right click shortcut in File Explorer ... have to use System Tray USB device Eject ... Drive can be removed without stopping it first, just like USB flash drives. Don't do it while drive is reading or writing ! Safe when drive is IDLE or sleeping only ! Un-installing Turbo-PCand RAM-Disk Utility are CLEAN , no left-overs, but both require reboot Turbo-PC EX is installed as 2 SERVICES ... TurboPC EX DiskCashe Control Service and TurboPC EX FileCopy Service both are set to Automatic Start-Up.
