VFX Artists, look no further!

TYAN S2925G2NR ATX Server Motherboard AM2 NVIDIA nForce Professional 3400 DDR2 800
TYAN S2925G2NR ATX Server Motherboard AM2 NVIDIA nForce Professional 3400 DDR2 800

Pros: If you are creating a heavy-hitting workstation for graphics, editing, server use, VFX, or animation, this chipset is a dream! Numerous PCI-Express ports, nforce Pro 3400, a wide gamut of chips supported, and memory compatibility meld to make a robust platform. It works best with XP Pro-64, Windows Server, and ubuntu with variants.

Cons: Windows XP Home and Pro are troublesome with this board. You might have better luck than I had. This chipset gets BOILING hot. BEWARE! retrofit an active-copper or water sinc with silver cooling compound for optimal cooling.

AVOID

OCZ RevoDrive X2 PCI-E 100GB PCI-Express x4 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSDPX-1RVDX0100
OCZ RevoDrive X2 PCI-E 100GB PCI-Express x4 MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSDPX-1RVDX0100

Pros: Not for me.

Cons: This drive is highly prone to failure. Even with the provided drivers on OCZ's site, the drive will not take windows 7; the OS it is supposed to work best with. The RAID configuration is flaky at best. As others have said before, OCZ is NOT a terribly honest company. I'm ready to eat my $300 because I just will not subject myself to their return department. I will regret buying this drive and will stop purchasing from them in the exact way I will not purchase Creative products after the Daniel_K incident. I've had enough.

Overall Review: It will NOT work on Mac OS X although I DID NOT EXPECT it to. Nowhere did they say it would. Will not fault them there. However, Linux support even with the recommended kernel is just as spotty as Win 7. HIGHLY Disappointed.

Linux support is fantastic!

ASUS Xonar D1 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card
ASUS Xonar D1 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

Pros: Under kernel 2.6.26.3 this and all of the xonar cards work perfectly. I had no trouble recompiling the new ALSA code under ubuntu 8.04 in order to get this to work. Intrepid Ibex, 8.10 alphas picked this card up immediately with no upgrade required.

Cons: Might require a kernel recompile until ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex is released. This is not for everyone and is very technical.

Overall Review: Given the lack of Creative support for Linux, ASUS stepped up to the plate.

Great for Linux! Not for Windows Vista/XP!

Acer Laptop Aspire AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-55 3GB Memory 160GB HDD NVIDIA GeForce 7000M 17.0" Windows Vista Home Premium AS7520-5185

Pros: The included hardware is outstanding for everyday tasks. An upgrade on the hard drive is recommended to acquire maximum capacity for today's large files. Ram configuration is quite flexible too! Linux takes to this machine like a fish in water and runs circles around its Microsoft-loaded counterparts.

Cons: Comes with Vista, the world's worst Operating System. Even with upgraded hard drives and ram, the system lags like an old dog. Beware of the outrageous number of running tasks that Vista loads into the background.

Overall Review: If you are into having a truly 64-bit machine then xubuntu Hardy Heron or MINT Linux is your operating system of choice for this laptop.

The S2915-E will be **THE** Barcelona board!

TYAN S2915WA2NRF SSI/Extended ATX Server Motherboard Dual 1207(F) NVIDIA nForce Professional 3600 + 3050 DDR2 667

Pros: I bought this board as a tide me over until the new revision comes out later this month. This board does not support the split power plane and advanced B2 barceona instruction sets. Decent for 1st Gen AMD Quad core but wait for the next revision for full, inteil-crushg, native quad-core power!

Cons: Not the S2915WA2NRF-E

Overall Review: Hang on, THE ULTIMATE BARCEONA BOARD IS COMING.

I loved these so much at work, I put one in my home PC.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM2 125W Processor - ADX6000CZBOX
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - Athlon 64 X2 Windsor Dual-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM2 125W Processor - ADX6000CZBOX

Pros: I loved these chips in my VFX station so much that they are now in my home PC. The speed is a tremendous jump over my old PC. Here are the specs: AMD Duron 800mhz, 256MB SDRAM 133, 20GB WD 7200 IDE, 200watt Antec, 8x DVD-Rom, 24x cd-rw drive, nVIDIA geforce mx 440 AGP 4X. It was time for an upgrade for sure! the pseed is everything I expected from a dual core. Everything I do is instant. I do not know how much faster intel can make instant but hey, with enough marketing hype and skewed benchmarks anything is possible.

Cons: Just get a new copper sinc w/ arctic silver to chill this guy out. Other than that, NOTHING.

Overall Review: My new system specs: TYAN Tomcat AMD nforce pro 3400 motherboard, nVIDIA 7950GX2 PCI-E X16, 4GB DDR2 667, 1TB RAID 0 array, Areca controlller card, dual 16X DVD writers, 750 watt OCZ supply, AMD 6000 of course.
