Take this MSI seriously

MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: ALC898 Codec for excellent quality audio, >=100 dbA S/N ratio. Layout is good. Long video cards won't block anything, as SATA and USB3.0 connectors are the right-angle type (which I prefer). Supports both Crossfire and SLI. With an i5-3570K, it was easy to OC to 4.2 using OC Genie. Got to 4.4 manually but did not increase voltage, booted into Windows but was not Prime95 stable. See other thoughts. OUTSTANDING THERMALS. In a 24C-25C room, even overclocked, during and after Prime95, bitmining, and gaming, I didn't see the VRMs go over 36C nor the chipset go over 38C, even when the CPU reached 60C (using a common 120mm tower cooler on an open testbed case). At idle, they're around 28C. I took these measurements with a handheld IR thermometer. Driver and utility software installation very easy; can get all the ones you want (and none you don't) using the Total Installer, which gives you checkboxes for everything. RAID1 easy to set up; retained across OS loads. CPU temp display (uses BIOS boot code display once booting is complete) is a neat feature. Decent accessories, including four SATA cables, some pin header blocks, test leads for the voltage check points, I/O plate, two manuals, and a nice case badge. Reasonable number of chassis fan headers on the board, but see con. Dual BIOS chips, selectable by a switch. It won't be easy to brick this board unless you're really trying. Quality components used throughout including a solid capacitors and ferrite chokes. Good strong board, did not flex while installing the cooler. The Control Center is a nice, convenient starting point. Has some monitors if you like to see how your system is running.

Cons: Not all functions / utilities as intuitive as they could be. It is necessary to read the manuals! A little bit of Engrish in the manuals, but I've seen far worse. In particular, I would have liked to have seen any voltage changes expressed as an offset, rather than an absolute voltage. ClickBIOSII needs progress indicators, as many of its actions take more time than you'd expect. Instructions for Winki III are inconsistent, incomplete, and/or wrong. Only one CPU fan header; comparable boards often have two for push-pull CPU coolers. The Killer NIC management software relies on third-party pieces (FRAPS, Flash (for Speedtest)) and gets a little wonky if they're not installed and configured. ClickBIOSII: Seems to work, but slow to do some things, and you might think your system is hung. Some kind of progress indicator would be useful. Winki III did not want to work. The most straightforward description from the manual did not install this. I put it on C: and it did not work, and on the system's RAID-1 and it did not work either (no surprise; might require AHCI mode?)

Overall Review: Among gamers, some enjoy playing WITH their PCs, and some enjoy playing ON their PCs. This board caters to both. If MSI wanted to be seriously considered by gamers who wanted to build now instead of waiting for Haswell, this was a great way to start. The dragon motif marks this as a gamer's board without being over the top (this 50-something even likes the case badge). The excellent thermal performance cannot be understated. The web is full of tales of weak VRMs on MSI boards; this board suffers from none of that. The voltage test points exposed dead batteries in my DVM. I am not a madd overclocker, so it wasn't particularly important to me, but someone who is will like this feature. If you want a lot more details on the numbers, HardOCP did an excellent technical review of this board recently. My results were consistent with theirs, although I prefer not to push voltage and did not. I prefer to play ON my PC much more than WITH it, and I'm not going to care about another 200MHz-300MHz. I did a couple of complete OS loads on this system, and encountered some anomalies on the first attempt that I did not attribute to this board, but to AMD's video drivers for a HD7970. On initial setup, I would suggest clearing the BIOS, setting some stock preferences, then installing using Intel's IGP (if your CPU includes it); THEN install any add-in video board(s). Once set up, I had no trouble with cards of either vendor; the HD7970 mined BTC 24/7 for about a week, and I played a few games on that and on a GTX650Ti. I did not record FPS, as being irrelevant in a mobo review, but did check VRM and chipset temps numerous times using an IR thermometer. I couldn't tell one way or another if the Killer NIC made any difference, possibly due to my 200Mb/s Powerline connection. It certainly didn't make anything worse, such as by lagging my interrupts in Guild Wars. Other thoughts on some if the utilities: Easy Viewer: Perhaps the only true bloatware on the CD. If you use anything like Picasa, there's no need to keep this around. It's controls are not intuitive; for example <Esc> has no function, like an undo for any change. Fast Boot: With a SSD in the system, I did not notice a difference; it looks like this might be a Windows 8-only feature. Live Update 5: Very nice. Read the manual on it, as it isn't 100% intuitive, but it will update BIOS and drivers. The board's BIOS was up to date, but some of the MSI programs were not, and this updated them. Super-Charger: Ok, could be useful, but disables syncing. VideoGenie: A way to turn on some arbitrary video settings. I did notice a subtle difference, but it's neither Pro nor Con. Bottom line: if my primary system weren't microATX, I'd be very tempted to replace its board with this one.

Most Critical Review

Potential, but that's it.

NETGEAR Powerline AV500 Adapter Kit (XAVB5201), up to 500Mbps
NETGEAR Powerline AV500 Adapter Kit (XAVB5201), up to 500Mbps

Pros: Integrated well with other PL equipment. Worked through junction boxes. Slightly but consistently a little faster than 200Mb/s devices. Physically small and does not block the top outlet when plugged into the bottom one. Quick recognition. Kit is complete, with two devices, and two cables.

Cons: Unreliable. First one device started intermittently dropping; ok stuff happens. Then, less than a week later, the other one dropped too, and would no longer even pick up an IP address. LEDs did not indicate a problem. Devices hadn't been obstructed or confined, but had run a little warm.

Overall Review: I feel a little bad submitting this rather incomplete review, but BOTH units dropped their connections, and the second one would not reconnect. Put back in the same spot, older devices worked just fine. I wanted to like these; they're small, and the slight speed improvement (really, the ISP is the bottleneck) was noticeable. My testing was abbreviated, however, when the second one failed too, and multiple resets and unplugging/replugging did not even pick up an IP address. Network connections need to be reliable, and these units just weren't. The package showed no sign of shipping damage.

No complaints

GREENCYCLE 5 Pack Black Cyan Yellow Magenta Toner Cartridge Set Compatible for Brother 221BK TN225 TN-225 Color MFC HL Printer

Pros: Worked without issues. Output quality unchanged from original. Good price. No reason not to buy again when needed.

Cons: None found.

Overall Review: I don't print very much, so I can't comment on overall capacity. When I've had to replace a cartridge in my Brother MFC-9330CDW, these just worked; no jiggling, resetting, or other finagling needed. In another year or so when I need more, hopefully this brand is still available.

Pleased despite low capacity

Portable High-efficiency 2 x 18650 Batteries Power Bank Shell Box with USB Output & Indicator Light, For iPhone, iPad, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, MP4, PSP, Camera, Batteries Not Included(Random Colo
Portable High-efficiency 2 x 18650 Batteries Power Bank Shell Box with USB Output & Indicator Light, For iPhone, iPad, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson, MP4, PSP, Camera, Batteries Not Included(Random Colo

Pros: Good fit; closes properly. Starts charging my phone (LG G4) right away when connected. Plugs have a good snug fit. You provide the batteries, so can easily replace them when they no longer hold a charge (500-1000 cycles should be typical). Can be used to charge 18650 cells from a USB power source.

Cons: A USB light plugged in requires a button-press to turn on again if it has been off. Modest capacity. Your phone has a brighter flashlight. Does not come with a charging cable. Realize that YOU provide the 18650 cells, but they're pretty easy to find.

Overall Review: I got two of these cheap, when a larger one (5-cell) turned out to be junk, but I wanted to keep and use the batteries. These have a reasonable capacity for emergency use (e.g. one full charge, maybe part of another). At this capacity level, the single output port shouldn't be a con. You may want more capacity for a go-bag or pack, but when you don't want or need the size and weight of a big one, this case is decent. Many aspects of quality will depend on the cells you buy to go in it, but those determined by the case will be good.

NOT WATERPROOF!

160W Professional Monocrystalline Flexible Solar Panel Solar Power Module
160W Professional Monocrystalline Flexible Solar Panel Solar Power Module

Pros: Lightweight; easy to move. Has standard MC-4 connectors on it. Proper output; charges my power box while leaning against a window; but see con. Mounting grommets in the corners.

Cons: Despite statements in the listing, the product indicates it is NOT WATERPROOF. This means you really can't mount it outside for continuous use. It looks like it should be, as there is a plastic film over it, but there are enough air bubbles under it to show it was carelessly applied, hence why they probably claim it isn't waterproof. This really takes away many potential uses / placements of what might otherwise be a decent panel. Mounting it under glass or plexiglass would reduce its output. The only reason it gets three eggs is it is so lightweight and easy to move, and has a good power/size ratio.

Overall Review: If this were waterproof as claimed, it would be a five-egg product. As is, for most uses (e.g. with an RV), it is probably not a good choice.

Must-have backup power

FLOUREON 10000mAh Waterproof Solar Power Bank Battery Dual USB Port with Emergency LED Flashlight - Green
FLOUREON 10000mAh Waterproof Solar Power Bank Battery Dual USB Port with Emergency LED Flashlight - Green

Pros: This was a second purchase of this product. Although overrated (likely only 8000mAH), it otherwise works well as a power bank. The solar panel, though slow, is not useless. Sturdy construction; short of deliberate abuse, I'm not worried about it breaking. Bright area light (not a spot).

Cons: Overrated. My tests (keeping my own lightly-used cellphone charged throughout a week) suggest either the power indicator is way off, or it's probably 20%-25% overrated (which is not uncommon).

Overall Review: For the price, as a Shellshocker this is an outstanding deal; I may buy still more as gifts. The egg off is for being overrated, but its actual capacity is still solid for emergency or backup use.

Not exact; missing information

This product appears to be usable, but the connections aren't labeled, so it is a little different from the description. I believe it can be used the way I'd like, but only because it is similar is it possible to deduce connection polarity. It's not a five-egg product, but I expect it to work, so I'd probably consider buying more of them.
