Pleasing performance
Pros: Performs well and fits my needs [games, schoolwork, general browsing] Satiates my want for nextgen [it DOES have the option for pci-e gen3 m.2 even if the page doesn't show it] i5 Skylake DDR4 GTX 960m 7200rpm HDD m.2 pci-e 3 (empty) Thoughts: Audo - speakers are decent.. they're laptop speakers - audio sounds surprisingly nice through headphones (MSI does boast their audio boost feature and I'd say it shows) Monitor - A bit of bleed, but its crisp and only really noticeable on load/black screen - viewing angle is fair, but don't expect to use this from crazy positions as you can with some of the fancier monitors keyboard - has a nice feel on key press, firm and responsive , still have to get used to typing on it though touchpad - actually impressed on this one. I'm not a fan of touchpads by any means, but I find this one quite useable, has a nice feel and responds well ports - all the new fun fancy stuff [usb3, usbC, mini displayport, hdmi, mic/audio, ethernet, SD] extras - DVD drive - decent utilities to check performance - button to max fans to cool system [gets loud but i like the option for when im wearing headphones and dont care] most newer games I've played run flawlessly at least at high settings.. max is 'playable' but not for me [1080p] | FFXIV | Fallout4 | Borderlands:presequel | Diablo 3 |
Cons: There is one major con and one minor con that are actually important: *UPGRADING VOIDS WARRANTY* .. -major con- the bottom panel is one giant panel and one screw is covered by a 'warranty void if tampered' sticker This makes it impossible to upgrade memory, or to take advantage of the open m.2 slot Keyboard isn't backlit - minor con- I knew this going in, but for an $800+ 'gaming' laptop it's kind of silly not to have it negligible cons: Keyboard has some oddly placed buttons - the delete key is over the numeric keypad instead of over the backspace where it would be comfortable audio kept popping until i turned off the 'Nahimic Audio Enhancer' - software issue so I'm not going to fault that HDD - although it's 7200rpm I miss the snappiness of an SSD (... *points fingers at warranty tamper sticker*)
Overall Review: I had originally wanted the MSI GS40, but a $1600+ budget is not something I had. Not too sure about the battery life since I haven't fully tested the mobility of the unit, but I'm fairly certain on light use I could at least get a few hours out of it Definitely planning to upgrade this system once warranty is up with more memory and a SAMSUNG 950 PRO M.2 512GB -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147467 Overall this was a good buy and I would recommend it
Warranty
Pros: Device worked valiantly for 6~ months Read: 15-30mbs 2.0 50-70mbs 3.0 Write: 5-10mbs 2.0 20-30mbs 3.0
Cons: Device no longer works. PC will see device, but capacity is 0mb. Disk Manager reads 'no media'. (-1 egg)
Overall Review: I understand that these types of devices can stop working under heavy usage. My low rating has to do with the difficulty in dealing with the warranty and product support. (-2 eggs) Warranty: In a nutshell: it's very difficult to deal with sending an item back. Said item must also be shipped to china. Product Support: Sandisk or HP seem to have recovery software to try to fix their devices. This may not always fix the drives, but I'd give that A for effort. Team seams to have a more industrial approach to their products. If it breaks send it in, which would be fine if my $18 product wast $20 to send to china.
Be aware of non-compliant models!
Pros: - Good signal - easy management with unifi controller - adopts and works well with unifi network / other unifi APs - great for small offices and homes - multiple device heaven - multiple SSID / guest network - remote access with cloud key [ https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833969100&cm_re=unifi_cloud_key-_-33-969-100-_-Product ] - is SUPPOSED to work with 802.3af SEE OTHER
Cons: - some features such as certain guest network capabilities may require a permanently running unifi controller (I'm a fan of the cloud key) - possibility of old firmware issues out of the gates that will need to be dealt with [usually not a problem]
Overall Review: - I have a US-8-60W but the item I received would not work by direct hookup, requiring me to connect via the included injector. This should not have been the case since both the switch and the AP are 802.3af compatible, but apparently there are a few old APs out there are the 24V only(should no longer be on the market!) and that is what I received. It can be hit or miss so I did a return and will go somewhere that can guarantee the current edition. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=0XP-000A-000T8 (switch link) ps: I don't think I can link to UBNT but if you go to the product page for this item you can see the PoE compatibility at the bottom compared to the other models [ https://www.ubnt.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-lite/ ]
Plantronics Rig Flex
Pros: -great sound for cheap price -comfortable padding on the ears -comes with cable splitter -decent and clear mic (plantronics tends to do well on this) -packaging (brown box and bland but recycle conducive) some people had complained that it's not great for resale racks.. good for them..
Cons: -So much pain from the headband! FOR THE LOVE OF *insert your favorite Deity* PLEASE ADD PADDING TO THE HEADBAND
Overall Review: - These surprisingly have really good sound quality. Rich bass and clear mids / highs which you really notice with high quality audio. **BUT!!! the headband is so hard that it feels like it's eating into my brain after an hour... so much that even after switching to another comfortable pair my head was still sensitive and hurting. PLANTRONICS, PLEASE OH PLEASE CHANGE THIS HEADBAND TO THE RIG STYLE!! Those are so comfortable that I could wear them all day.
Wireless headphones
Pros: -Decent sound quality (brother in law isn't as particular as I am so it worked great) -easy to configure -okay comfort
Cons: -sound is sub average, if I was going to be critical. Most likely average + Bluetooth = less than awesome
Overall Review: -did not fit its intended purpose for jogging as it slipped and skipped (loose fit and shoddy connectivity on bounces). My brother in law actually has a big head so that's surprising that it slipped, but he is heavy footed so I could sort of understand the jostling effecting the headphones.
Couldn't reach advertised speeds
Pros: -Pretty.. oh so pretty.. can't stop looking at the shiny lights... ...Ahem.. sooo, They're pretty good memory that work fantastic, but not at the advertised speeds.. see cons
Cons: -could not and would not run at 3200mhz no matter what I did voltage or timing wise. Yes they are on the QVL for my board/cpu. -worked fantastic at 2933mhz
Overall Review: -rather than replace for the same, I upgraded to another version of the RGB which work great so keep in mind that I may have just had a dud set. -newegg customer service was easy to work with and set me up with a quick return process. It felt like the good old days that made them my go-to in the first place
