News: Have Gaming Movies finally accepted as "Good Movies?" Here's some of the biggest gaming movies out in recent years.

Movies based on video games have become a major trend in Hollywood, as studios tap into the popularity of beloved franchises. Over the years, these adaptations have ranged from faithful recreations to loose interpretations, often sparking debates among fans about how well they capture the spirit of the original games. Early examples like Mortal Kombat (1995) and Resident Evil (2002) leaned heavily into action and spectacle, paving the way for more ambitious attempts at bringing interactive worlds to the big screen. While these early films were often criticized for thin plots or campy execution, they proved that video game stories had a place in cinema.

In recent years, video game movies have taken a significant leap forward, both in quality and in audience reception. Films like Detective Pikachu (2019), Sonic the Hedgehog (2020, 2022), and The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) found commercial success while appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers. These titles stood out for their mix of nostalgic references, family-friendly humor, and respect for the source material. Not to mention, the Minecraft move (2025) reached incredible success this year.

I think its a mixed bag. They are way better than they used to be. ehem 90s Street Fighter cough cough.
But, would Minecraft have been as well received if it were not for Jack Black🤷🏻‍♂️. The source material is better too nowadays. Arguably deep lore was not the strong point of most video games of the 80’s-90’s. One other thing too. The biggest thing to kill a video game movie is for a Holywood writer to move to far off of the source material. I think they have learned their lesson on that. Probably alot of writers now have played games at somepoint in their life. Might not have been the case in the past.

I’m kinda waiting for a more dramatic movie say based on Mass Effect or something of the more serious nature like that. Would have said Falout, but now we have a TV show

I know it’s not a movie, but The Last of Us on HBO was really good.

I agree with the first season, the second season did not emotionally develop Ellie like they needed to, definitely the writers/actor’s fault. They added a bunch of unnecessary slop, but if you don’t compare it, it’s decent!

Also not related but watch Severance.
