4 out of 5 eggsGood Sound Card

Pros: Good sound card for the money. My 5.1 surround system sounds great with this card.

Cons: I had to disable my onboard sound card in order to get this card to work.

5 out of 5 eggsNot bad, Not bad at all.

Pros: Great deal! This card DOES, I repeat DOES support multi channel output through spdif as long as you have the proper decoder (i.e. a receiver). I just watched Walk the Line and switched off between DTS-ES and Dolby-EX the whole movie. Sounds pretty darn good. Just make sure to adjust your dvd software audio settings correctly and you will be good to go.

Cons: a little white noise at high volumes, but nothing to complain about.

5 out of 5 eggsLearn to properly setup

Pros: Cheap, 7.1, optical, low profile

Cons: none for me

Other Thoughts: Several buyers claim this unit only output 2 channel SPDIF. They are incorrect. In order to propoerly use 5.1 or above SPDIF, all programs must output this format. For example, you must go into the audio config of PowerDVD and set "Use SPDIF" otherwise it won't out put 5.1+. I'm watching Baraka right now in 5.1 optical.

4 out of 5 eggsOK

Pros: Easy install. Simple basic tools.

Cons: SPDIF does in fact deliver just two channel PCM only.

Other Thoughts: Bought this two replace blown motherboard sound in HTPC. Will be replacing for real surround sound.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent card on Dual Core system

Pros: Excellent sound on 5.1 speakers for an inexpensive card. Under options for Windows Mixer, try setting the bass boost. Rocks! The 7.1 virtual (DSP mode) really adds punch. Solid construction. Definite reccommend for anybody not interested in anything Creative.

Running this on Epox 9npaj SLI with Athlon X2 3800, so I have plenty of horsepower to do the DSP- YMMV

Cons: Haven't had time to sell how well it works under Linux.

Other Thoughts: Pulled tbe envy24 based sound card to try this one. Not putting it back!

1 out of 5 eggsYou get way you pay for

Pros: Very cheap

Cons: You get what you pay for here...

Other Thoughts: I would stay far away from Aopen products after the trouble i had with this one. poor customer support and instructions are not clear how to search all over their forums to find out that it does only support SDIF in only 2 channels... it makes use of the 3d digitial surround but is not true SPDIF 5.1...

4 out of 5 eggsLow cost solution

Comments: I installed this card last night with about the average number of troubles. Physically, the card is very small and since my case is a slimline case, I made use of the low profile brackets (included). Printed instructions are included, but they are very short and rather poorly translated. After installing the card and the drivers, the S/PDIF (digital optical output) just put out noisy garbage. After tinkering for a few minutes, I was able to correct the problem by clicking on the icon the driver installed in my system tray and changing the "effect" tab setting. This seemed to do something, as the S/PDIF suddenly starting working correctly. Someone stated here that the S/PDIF supported only two channels - this is incorrect. I think this person was confused by the fact that the included audio software does not allow the user to individually set the volume levels of each individual audio channel for the SPDIF output. This capability is limited only to the analog output. I think the idea is that the stereo receiver (and/or Dolby or DTS decoder) will handle this function for folks using S/PDIF. Anyway, I tested the S/PDIF with a DTS audio track, and it worked just fine. I did get one blue screen of death, when I was tinkering with the S/PDIF settings - something about a S/PDIF loopback. In summary, the card works fine. For $xx, it is a decent low cost solution.
