You just got your high speed modem (it could be cable, DSL, fiber optics . . . something nifty), and you've got your computers, and you've got your wireless interface cards. Now you need the final element: the router.

With four wired ports and the wireless connection, you're ready to take on the Internet and all it has to offer. Or maybe you just need a local network off the 'Net for your small office. Maybe you'll hook your desktop up by cable, and carry your wireless laptop to your favorite seat. Control and configuration are easy with browsers like Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3.0. (It's best to do your configuration from a hard-wired connection, not the wireless.)

Could this be the router for you? That's your decision, not ours. We'll be here, cheerfully waiting while you make up your mind.

5 out of 5 eggsGood buy

Pros: for the cost, it does everything you would want it it. I bought this to stick it behind my ATT router to add to the wireless range in my house. With alot of tinkering (because of the ATT router) it works like a charm.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsThey still sell these!?

Pros: Light
Durable
Nearly indestructible
Powerful
Easy to use
Cheap

Cons: No wireless-N? (Longer range, higher speeds)
Doesn't come preloaded with WRT?

Other Thoughts: I've had mine since 2005, gone through several homes, states, dropped more times than I want to know.
Install WRT on it! WRT is the easiest interface I've ever used and flashing WRT onto it is more technical than using it after!
You can always buy aftermarket high powered antennae if you want to boost the signal/range.
8 years and counting, longest I've ever had any machine last me! And thats even after flashing the bios, setting up port forwarding, blocking certain IPs/MAC addresses from cheap neighbors, being reset several dozen times...

1 out of 5 eggsThrew mine away

Pros: Pretty case. Excellent long range.

Cons: Kept dropping my password protected security. Reinstalled, reset and re-worked over 7 times. Mine was junk. Finally just threw it away rather than spend hours trying to return. If you buy one, I hope it works better for you than it did for me.

Other Thoughts: Due to its long range and no security, this can become a dangerous open networking risk.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The Linksys 54 is simply the best 54M router ever made and will always be remembered as "Linksys" (not Cisco) When I was on a budget I bought one of the T Mobile single antenna versions with RJ15 phone ports and even that one was and still is awesome. I'm using it now! If you don't need "N" speeds or range this is your baby!!

Cons: None, unless you need longer range and higher speeds. But really, is your ISP going to offer you 50M downloads?

5 out of 5 eggs7 years strong

Pros: I have had this thing since my last year of grad school. It has traveled with me through 4 jobs, 6 apartments/houses in 3 states, 2 laptops, 2 desktops, 5 iPhones, 3 TiVos and 5 boyfriends. It has been dropped more times than I can count (WHY do they make the modems so small and lightweight that the actual weight of the coaxial itself is enough to drag it and all things connected to a thump on the floor?). It has been forgotten in the corner of a room and allowed to be covered in piles of dust and cat and dog hair. It is a survivor.

Cons: No N? Not personally a con considering I've never run into the need for N.
Range doesn't let me watch YouTube from the edge backyard.
Doesn't make me pancakes.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working after 7 months

Pros: It was fine when it worked.

Cons: Stopped working. I tried everything... cable unplug, reset button, went through setup again, firmware flash upgrade, just refused to have an Internet connection. Weird thing was, it only died partially. I could still get to its setup 192.168.1.1 page. And still get an IP from it from other devices. But no Internet connection.

Other Thoughts: Avoid this model

5 out of 5 eggsStill works!

Pros: Keeps on working!

Cons: Not sure if the MAC filtering really works.

I don't know if I can block certain IP addresses at certain times with the stock firmware (stop my kids from going to anime websites when they should be doing their homework). Maybe I need to do my homework.

Other Thoughts: My children basically need the Internet to do their homework, and its only going to get worse; the high school is going to give all freshman Chrome books and no paper books, which can only mean the network MUST WORK or I will be called while at my place of employment and solve some problem over the phone.

I come to Newegg to buy a new router and none of the reviews and comments seem to match the reliability of this one. Is it because it doesn't have Wireless-N, I don't know.

What I do know is that it works, and FUD - fear, uncertainty, doubt has crept into my brain, making me afraid to buy a new one (you know the old say, if it works, don't fix it).

And don't lie, you bought something and the old one worked better, right? A sump pump, paper shredder, a variable frequency drive, Windows 7 (ha ha), some times older is better.

I never installed any of the alternative OS (WRT, Tomato), because it works.

5 out of 5 eggsdarn dependable

Pros: My old WRT54GL just quit after 7 years. Darn dependable, easy to use UI.

Cons: Obsolete by modern standards.
Lasted for (only?) 7 years, but was a workhorse that withstood a lot of abuse so that's not really a con.

4 out of 5 eggsBulletproof and "timeless" router

Pros: Custom firmware compatible
Excellent stock firmware (very customizable, even without CFW)
Easy operation (plug and play, baby... but I would recommend against using WPS wifi setup as it is very vulnerable... this doesn't apply to just this router though... it applies to any router. that has WPS as an option)
Well-built (for plastic) and long lasting
Excellent value for the price

Cons: Showing its age a bit: no 802.11n, and no Gigabit ethernet...

Other Thoughts: What can I say about this router that hasn't already been said before? This is an excellent little consumer router for the money. I have owned 3 of these over the years, and they all served me well. You can put custom firmware on them if you want to go that route, but even the stock firmware is fairly "powerful", honestly. It's easy to set up port forwarding (individual or ranged), triggering, DMZ hosts, and more, which is perfect for setting up gaming and/or other applications which require port forwarding. Static IP's work just fine on the stock firmware too... I'm not sure what that other guy was getting at when he said you couldn't reserve static IP's. I have an XBox360, a PS3, and a raspberry pi which I have all set to use static IP's. I simply set them to use an ip address that is outside the range that the router uses to assign DHCP IPs. For instance, I set the router to start assigning dynamic IPs at x.x.x.100, and then I set any device specific static IP's in the range of x.x.x.[2-99].

Anyway, the only thing that really takes away from this router is that it is starting to show its age now. This router does not sport gigabit ethernet or 802.11n, and both are common in many consumer grade routers in the same price range. This isn't really a huge deal for me, but I took 1 egg off anyway, as I know a lot of people expect these features.

Bottom line is that if you don't absolutely need 802.11n and/or Gigabit Ethernet, then you need look no farther than this router. It will do everything you want it to do, and some. It is, hands down, the best consumer router Linksys ever made, and it puts those other black space-age looking things that they make now to shame. When this router eventually goes off the market, I will probably end up changing brands altogether... this really is that much better than anything else Linksys makes.

2 out of 5 eggsWorked until it didn't

Pros: This operated right out of the box and gave decent range in our home. It's in the basement and we can get a good signal on the second floor.

Cons: Made it almost 2 years. Now it's dead. It started to reset itself, erasing all of the settings and becoming an open network. This lasted a couple months, now it doesn't work at all.
