Nice, simple case with decent sound dampening; not built for max airflow/overclocking

Corsair Carbide Series 100R Silent Edition CC-9011077-WW Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case (Power Supply Not Included)
Corsair Carbide Series 100R Silent Edition CC-9011077-WW Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case (Power Supply Not Included)

Pros: Wanted to upgrade my all-purpose desktop (some gaming, some video ripping/encoding, media server), didn't want something that looks like a spaceship with a ton of LEDs. This case is as plain as they come, which is what I wanted, without looking and feeling cheaply made. This is also in my bedroom and runs mostly 24/7, so the padding on the interior of the case to muffle sound is also nice, this runs pretty quietly (even with a couple of really loud HGST HDDs that had previously woken me up at night when they were in an external RAID enclosure).

Cons: Cable management is a little tight in this case, there isn't a ton of clearance on the back of the motherboard panel if you've got a lot of things packed into this case. Not really built for overclocking, airflow isn't maxed out (i.e. no vents on the top of the case). At one point, I cranked up the CPU voltage to get some extra MHz out of my CPU, but my CPU cooler fan was blasting incessantly and was pretty loud even with the noise muffling case; when doing some heavier tasks (like video encoding), had to take the side panel off to keep the CPU from locking up. Ultimately decided to just go back down to stock voltage, which honestly provided plenty of performance for my needs (and stays nice and quiet).

Overall Review: Definitely recommended for simple, non-flashy builds where max airflow isn't a primary goal.

Vantec Power Gem Pink 3500 mAh Rechargeable Portable Battery VAN-350BB-PK
Vantec Power Gem Pink 3500 mAh Rechargeable Portable Battery VAN-350BB-PK

Pros: Got a great deal on this battery pack. It worked as expected when I first bought it. The unit is nice and compact, especially compared to many other battery packs I've seen in use.

Cons: The unit is all plastic, feels little flimsy, but that could be forgiven if the unit worked. My main problem is that the unit appears to have stopped working after not being used for a couple of months. The power button no longer responds, and I see 4 simultaneously blinking LEDs when I attempt to charge. The documentation (which is pretty minimal) doesn't specifically explain what the blinking LEDs mean, but it seems to indicate that the unit will no longer accept a charge. There may be a way to fix this, but none of the product documentation explains how to do so. At this point, I'm probably going to toss it in the trash.

Overall Review: I was hoping to use this for a recent work trip, only to discover that it was non-functional. Thankfully, I didn't spend much on the unit. The next time I buy a battery pack, I may spend a little more money to get something less cheaply built.

Loud noises and poor performance (possibly defective)

HGST DeskStar NAS 3.5" 4TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging 0S04005
HGST DeskStar NAS 3.5" 4TB 7200 RPM 128MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s High-Performance Hard Drive for Desktop NAS Systems Retail Packaging 0S04005

Pros: The combo price/TB I got was pretty compelling. According to all the hard drive tests I've run, the drives appear to be in working order.

Cons: No joke, the drives I received are loud. I purchased 2 4TB drives for a RAID 0 array in an external enclosure attached to a PC in my bedroom, the noises from these drives actually woke me up in the middle of the night (I thought an animal was eating through the baseboards or something). After a few panicked moments, I realized that it was my brand new hard drives (which resulted in another round of panic). I've been trained over the years to assume that loud clicking was a sign of imminent HDD failure, and the sounds these drives make are not far off. It's very possible that one or both of these drives is defective, but all the diagnostic tests I ran came back normal. I've also been pretty disappointed by the performance of the drives, though I can't say for sure that the drives are at fault (it could have been the enclosure or other network issues). Transfers seemed to bottleneck frequently. All in all, not great. I resorted to using a single cheap 8TB drive in my computer instead of the external enclosure because the performance was so sluggish.

Overall Review: Bottom line, I don't trust these drives. I suspect that at least one of the drives I received is defective, at least I sort of hope that's the case. I will be replacing them with WD Reds, will not purchase HGST again regardless of price.

Best upgrade ever!

SUPER TALENT 32GB IDE ZIF MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) FEM32GF13M
SUPER TALENT 32GB IDE ZIF MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) FEM32GF13M

Pros: I just replaced the lousy 8 GB Intel SSD that came in my Acer Aspire One A110 netbook with this drive over the weekend, and the difference in performance has been night and day. - Everything runs SO much faster, and there are no more of the inexplicable lags that drove me up the wall. It's like a brand new computer. - The extra space is nice too. I installed office on the 8 GB drive, and I quickly received a "LOW DISK SPACE" error. Not a problem anymore! - This "mod" didn't require any double-sided tape, or a Dremel tool to grind anything down - I simply unscrewed the Intel chip, replaced it with the Super Talent ship, connected the new drive to the existing ZIF connector, and it was done.

Cons: - The installation process was a bit of a chore -- NOT recommended for the faint of heart, as you have basically disassemble the whole computer -- but that's Acer's fault. - Not currently in stock at newegg.com, so I had to order it from someone else.

Overall Review: As I mentioned above, I have only had this in my netbook for a couple of days, so I can't speak to it's durability or longevity at all. But let me tell you, I am really psyched about how well this thing is working so far! Also, just to disclose, I also upgraded the RAM from 1 GB to 1.5 GB, so it's possible that some of the increased performance I'm seeing is related to that. Still, the difference in write times offered by this SSD and what the Intel SSD offered is not even comparable - this one blows the Intel chip away!

Nice deal!

Kingston 1GB MicroSD Flash Card w/2 Adapters Model SDC/1GB-2ADP
Kingston 1GB MicroSD Flash Card w/2 Adapters Model SDC/1GB-2ADP

Pros: For $4, I can copy media to and from my cell phone. I can take pictures or record videos and easily transfer them to my computer. I can easily copy music or sound files from my PC to my phone. Not bad!

Cons: Not free?

Overall Review: Bought 2 - one for me and my fiancee for less than it costs for dinner for 2 at McDonald's. I'm okay with that.

huge help

ZALMAN VF700-CU 2 Ball VGA Cooler
ZALMAN VF700-CU 2 Ball VGA Cooler

Pros: The fan on my EVGA 7600GS broke (man, those stock coolers are a joke), so the card was running at ~70 degree Celcius idle and jumping into the 80s with a minor load. It was setting off the thermal alarm on my mobo! Took off the junky stock cooler and slapped this guy on (installation was a breeze, documentation was totally adequate), and my card is now idling in the low 30s and only going up to ~40 with a little bit of a load. NIGHT AND DAY! Also, it's really quiet. I don't even notice it, even with the case open.

Cons: It's pretty big and eats up an expansion slot, and the 3-pin power cable wouldn't plug into the 2-pin plug on my card.

Overall Review: I should have done this sooner! As it stands, my card has a couple of popped capacitors. Maybe they were defetive anyway, but I can't help but think that having the cooler from the getgo would extend the life of my card in the long run.
