StarTech 2 Port PCI Express SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter Model PEXUSB3S2
  • Owned For: 1 month to 1 year

4 out of 5 eggs Great Performance with One Flaw 09/12/2013

This review is from: StarTech 2 Port PCI Express SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Card Adapter Model PEXUSB3S2

Pros: - Fantastic Performance
- Easy Install
- Took 3 seconds to copy a 745mb ISO from OCZ Vertex 4 SSD to a 16gb USB 3.0 Sandisk Extreme memory stick

Cons: - Mine needed firmware update which was not easy to find
- Best drivers are not on StarTech's site. I had to go to Renesas site to obtain them.

Other Thoughts: - Mine needed firmware update which was not easy to find
- Best drivers are not on StarTech's site. I had to go to Renesas site to obtain them.

YOU CANNOT BOOT FROM USB DRIVES ATTACHED TO THIS CARD (i hear you can if you have a UEFI bios)

I also need to point out that a previous reviewer claimed the reason why you cannot boot from a device attached to this card is because the driver isn't loaded and tried to say this was somehow like a video card requires drivers.

NONSENSE.

If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to boot from PCI-Express SATA cards, or old school PCI-Express IDE/Firewire cards. Well... you can! The reason why this card cannot be booted from is due to the card not having a boot rom chip which allows the bios to understand what kind of device it is and how it works. Think of it as a driver that's built into the card. ALL bootable devices, including video cards and just about every storage controller in your computer have their own little boot ROM, which is why many motherboard manufacturers include updates for these boot rom chips on occasion as part of a BIOS update.

All too often I see people on Newegg select the highest level of tech experience when they are nowhere near it. What I posted about boot roms is very basic knowledge that even a moderately skilled person should know and understand.

PNY VCGGTX650T1XPB GeForce GTX 650 Ti 1GB 128-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Video Card
  • Owned For: 1 day to 1 week

Pros: This is probably the best nVidia card you can buy for the money. I bought it from another dealer and should have bought it here, but I had a store credit.

Cons: It's not free?

Other Thoughts: I wanted to point out the reviewer who gave it 1 egg, who claims to have high tech knowledge, should have known that DVI-D connections do not support VGA>DVI adapters because they are for a pure digital signal as opposed to VGA which is an analog signal. DVI-I connections can utilize such an adapter, which is probably the type of connector found on both DVI ports on his previous card.

COUGAR CF-V12HPB Vortex Hydro-Dynamic-Bearing (Fluid) 300,000 Hours 12CM Silent Cooling Fan with Pulse Width Modulation (Black)
  • Verified Owner
  • Owned For: 1 week to 1 month

Pros: Low noise level for the amount of air it moves.
Has a high quality feel to it. Almost as heavy as my awesome Panaflo 120mm M1A fans.
Rubber vibration dampeners

Cons: One of them stopped working after 5 days. I smelled the motor and it was clearly fried. Definitely NOT caused by my 1kw Corsair AX power supply.
Not worth the money to ship back. I may return it in person if I am out near City of Industry soon.

Next time ill just buy new Panaflo fans. Mine have ran 24/7 for 7 years with no failures.
