easy breezy cpu cooling

CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i Extreme Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 240mm
CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i Extreme Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 240mm

Pros: keeps my over clocked cpu ice cold. plug and play installation. Now I have plenty of room for memory cooling fins on the mobo which I did not have with the air cooler.

Cons: loud non-pwm fans. confusing cpu mounting hardware.

Overall Review: I could not figure out the cpu cooling block cpu mounting with the magnets. I made my own. The fans that came with it were not PWM fans. My motherboard (asus maximums vi formula) has built in fan control if you use PWM fans, so I replaced the fans with noctua pwm fans. Now runs super quiet. Dont need the link software since you can control the fans based on cpu temperature with the motherboard. If you have the right case (mine is a fractal case) the big cooler fits right in with no mods.

amazing case

Fractal Design Arc XL (FD-CA-ARC-XL-BL-W) Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
Fractal Design Arc XL (FD-CA-ARC-XL-BL-W) Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Pros: Big and roomy. Plenty of room behind the mobo tray for cables and connectors. Plenty of air flow options and configurations. Comes with fan controller. Covers come off with thumb screws. The H100i fits perfectly with no problems.

Cons: fans loud when full on. hard drive cages could be easier to remove and install, specially the bottom one. rear fan mounting is real tight with a case seam too close to the fan. the front fan mounts are tight too. documentation is very poor (But I suppose if you are building your own computer you should be able to figure it out)

Overall Review: I love this case. The cons are not really cons, just issues I ran into that were easily resolved. I replaced all the fans in the case (and water cooler) with PWM Noctua fans. Granted, these monster fans are designed for a cpu cooler, but have all sort of funky mounting points so you can use them as case coolers. The rear fan mount has a case seam real close to the fan mount. The Noctua would not fit. But, I took a blade and trimmed a little plastic from the fan and it fit. This case is so big, I would think Fractal could move the seam 1/8" inch to accomodate a wider variety of fans. The case front supports two fans. One Noctua fan fits perfectly in the bottom position, but the top fan is too close to the bottom fan that the second one won't fit. I never came up with an acceptable mod for this one. But, by mounting the Noctua fans sideways they physically fit but then the mounting holes do not. Oh, I jury rigged it so I could mount the fans (not proud of this one) But, this case is so big... if Fractal gave another 1/4 between fans these monsters would fit no problem. With the six fans running in a positive airflow configuration and the fan speed controlled by MOBO ... the fans are idling around 400rpm and very quiet. With the overclocked cpu pushed to the limits the cooling more than keeps the idle temp at 36C and I only see the temp climb when stressed with artificial load tests. This is either a con for case or mobo ... dont know which ... the headers for LEDs for the power and HDD are backwards from documentation. If the LEDs dont light, try swapping polarity. My guess is that is a documentation issue with motherboard, but just throwing it out there.

awesome fan

Noctua NF-A15 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin (140mm, Brown)
Noctua NF-A15 PWM, Premium Quiet Fan, 4-Pin (140mm, Brown)

Pros: very efficient. very quiet. variable PWM

Cons: The fans are big

Overall Review: they have all sorts of mounting holes for just about every occasion, but still had to modify one of the fans to fit the case. It was unexpected, but only took 5 min with an exacto blade. I bought 6, two on water cooler, two on front, one on rear and one on bottom. With all six fans running I can barely hear them at all. the motherboard fan controller works well with these pwm fans. most of the time they are loafing around 400 rpms (asus maximus vi formula)
