Performance

Intel Core i7-920 - Core i7 Bloomfield Quad-Core 2.66 GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor - BX80601920
Intel Core i7-920 - Core i7 Bloomfield Quad-Core 2.66 GHz LGA 1366 130W Processor - BX80601920

Pros: Huge boost in performance over my previous Pentium D 940 which I thought was fast. Renders video for DVD creation in a fraction of the time. 8 cores (4 actual x 2 virtual HT) shreds everything I throw at it. Overclocks like a beast. Already running at 3.6GHz without breaking a sweat. Not sure why anyone would pay 2x or 3x for the higher speed models when this one is capable of the same performance levels for all intents and purposes. Ram Performance hits new levels due to direct memory control instead of going through NB.

Cons: Stock Heatsink/Fan is okay if you don't plan on overclocking or if you don't mind heating your house under heavy load. At 3.2GHz, was 55C at idle and in the 70's under load. Too hot for me, so I got an aftermarket cooler for significant improvement. I guess if Intel provided a better cooler, the CPU cooler industry would collapse.

Overall Review: Glad I put up the extra $$ to get this instead of the Core 2 Quad. Actually, this is currently priced lower the a couple of the C2Qs at similar speeds. CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model TW3X4G1333C9A G

Pros: Performance OK when it worked. Low Cost

Cons: Just like a recent reviewer, I kept getting crashes and BSODs and had to keep reinstalling the OS (Win7 64-bit). Since this was for a new build, it was difficult to diagnose (MOBO, HDD, PSU, CPU?). Tried two different HDDs with same issue. MemTest even ran fine. Eventually it came down to cold boot after system being off for many hours. Then MEMTEST finally picked up the massive failures. Corruption of system files would not even allow for repair or recovery. It even killed all restore points, so only OS reinstall would work. Luckily, I imaged a good install so I didn't have to keep doing full setup while troubleshooting. Put in a set of OCZ platinum from my main rig and it works like a champ at higher freq and lower timings.

Overall Review: I will see if I can get replacements, but may just purchase a few sticks of G-Skill because of the 100% testing and high ratings. Should have checked the Corsair forums when this issue first started to occur. Wouldn't usually expect memory errors upon cold boot

Good for only a single mounting

Cooler Master Vortex Plus - CPU Cooler with Aluminum Fins and 4 Direct Contact Heatpipes
Cooler Master Vortex Plus - CPU Cooler with Aluminum Fins and 4 Direct Contact Heatpipes

Pros: Looks really nice, four copper heatpipes. Provides Good clearance on my MOBO. Makes very good contact with the CPU.

Cons: First of all, this was probably a bad choice on my part. I should have gone for a heftier cooler for a first generation I7 CPU. So other than the problems I had with mounting parts, take this into consideration when I review the performance. Mounting plastic ware is brittle hard plastic and not forgiving for do-overs. When I first settled on a mounting configuration, I realized the heatpipes were too close to a row of capacitors and would prematurely age them due to the heat generated. Thus I decided to reverse the mounting direction. I was very gentle and slow removing the plastic fasteners, but two of them broke anyway. No spares are provided so I could not continue with installation. They should be using softer plastic as was the case with other CM CPU coolers I have purchased. They will at least provide a few re-insertions. Had to modify a few Intel stock cooler pegs to get the mounting hardware sturdy so I could install the cooler. So far, my I7 Bloomfield cores are running at 50C idle with no overclocking. Quickly approaches 78C when running Passmark CPU Performace Test. The Intel Stock Cooler performed better than this. For the first time I used the CM provided Heatsink grease having used Artic Silver on all other builds. I will redo this using AS and see where the temp results go. However, I don't expect more than a 5 degree improvement at best. I should have stuck with the Hyper 212 Plus as I have had good luck with them. This is not nearly as hefty, but to get results below a stock cooler is unacceptable. This would probably be sufficient for AMD CPU.

wrong cable included

SABRENT CRW-EXT 52-in-1 USB 2.0 External Flash Memory Card Reader/Writer
SABRENT CRW-EXT 52-in-1 USB 2.0 External Flash Memory Card Reader/Writer

Pros: Works fine once you hook up a USB 2.0 cable. Apparently the cable supplied is not 2.0 compatible. Thus I had all of the same problems as other reviewers. Once I uninstalled the "Unknown devices" it left in Device Manager and hooked up with USB 2.0 cable, the reader was recognized and generic drivers installed without a hitch. Data transfer was good even though I only tried out the SDHC slot.

Cons: Wrong cable included. I guess you could find a USB 1.0 port to hook it up to, but that's kind of a waste. Actually I did first hook it up to USB 1.0 slot on my keyboard and it gives a message that it can perform much faster on USB 2.0. Oh well!

Overall Review: Does all I need it to do. Canon HFS100 camcorder has some really buggy software included and literally takes hours to download a few gig of video. This reader reduces that down to minutes.

Unmatched Value

Canon PIXMA iP4700 3742B002 9.2 ipm Black Print Speed 9600 x 2400 dpi Color Print Quality USB InkJet Photo Color Printer
Canon PIXMA iP4700 3742B002 9.2 ipm Black Print Speed 9600 x 2400 dpi Color Print Quality USB InkJet Photo Color Printer

Pros: Value can't be beat. Paid for ink, got an excellent printer with ink and free shipping. Excellent photo quality and 4X6 comes out in about 30 seconds using high quality once printing starts. Even faster in standard quality with little compromise in photo quality. Auto 2 sided printing (duplexer) at this price point is a great added feature. Setup and installation was simple and straight forward. Software has good features and simple to use - not bloatware like other printer companies. And as always, Newegg service and fast shipping is consistently the best of the best. Will continue to look to Newegg first for all of my technology purchases.

Cons: Printer default settings make photos look a bit washed out, but this was taken care by adjustments in the software. This means that ink usage will be higher to get accurate color and saturation. Text in draft mode, while very fast is not very crisp - compared to my HP at about 5X the price. Text in normal is decent. Takes about as long or longer to start the print job as it does to complete the printing.

Overall Review: I been disappointed with the photo quality of my expensive HP all in one from the day I bought it about 3 years ago (was worse than previous HP models). When I saw this on sale along with the high user ratings, I figured I couldn't go wrong. I was right. The photo detail is much better and it is easier to adjust. I will now use this printer for all of my photo printing. You really can't beat this printer for the price (even at the normal price) and maybe not even if you spend three times as much and I'm speaking as someone who has a very critical eye for quality and detail. I'm still pinching myself for being able to get this iP4700 for almost free (literally for less than the cost of a set of ink cartridges and free three day shipping).

Excellent Cooler

KINGWIN XT-1264 120mm Xtreme Direct H.T.C. (Heat-pipe Touch Chip) CPU Cooler w/ 1366 Bracket
KINGWIN XT-1264 120mm Xtreme Direct H.T.C. (Heat-pipe Touch Chip) CPU Cooler w/ 1366 Bracket

Pros: One of the best bargains in a CPU Cooler. Dropped my core i7 920 idle temps 12+ degrees compared to stock cooler. Running about 43C at 3.4 Ghz idle and maxes out at 68 using Prime 95 torture test. All 4 cores running aroung 75c max. Wouldn't even run torture with stock cooler. Performs right up there with better known names, so you'll be paying extra for a name. Installed rather easy, even though a flat screwdriver will be necessary to push down the two pins below the fan. 120mm Fan is fairly quiet - I really can't hear it above my case fans. Very pleased with this purchase. Hardly even need to mention that Newegg is tops.

Cons: Plain, boring, and unapealling. You might want to replace that glass side window with a solid door to hide it. Maybe not that bad, but no lights or bling. Lots of Alum. fins and ample opportunity to cut yourself. Easy to bend as well so lay it down on the fan side before installation

Overall Review: If you are more concerned with performance than nice curves and lights, this is a great buy - maybe the best value for $. If you're all about appearance or a combination of performance and style, you'll probably want something else (and will pay a bit more for it as well). I used a 3 year old syringe of Arctic Silver 3 for heatsink compound and it seems to be working just fine. 4 Gig, I'm on the way!
