Nice Drives. Get the firmware update!

SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Fast Enough Quiet Supposedly reliable (too soon to tell for sure) Cost

Cons: There is an ESSENTIAL firmware upgrade for these drives. There was a bug where if SMART data was accessed at the same time there was a chance of data corruption. The update took me about 5 minutes total for my 3 drives with FreeDOS and the update utility from Samsung. The firmware number for the fix has the same version number as the prior, so the only way to know for sure is to attempt to flash the firmware and see if it takes. The drives I bought in early December 2010 still needed this update.

Overall Review: I bought 3 of these drives for a Synology DS410 that I also love, but that's another review. The drives run reasonably cool. They are quiet. They have been reliable thus far. I've got my array about half full with time machine backups and media so far. I applied the firmware patch after having a bunch of data on the drives, which made me nervous, but no troubles at all. Would give 5 eggs if shipped with current firmware and if they prove to be reliable.

Great quiet little fan

SUNON HA40201V4-0000C-C99 40mm Case cooler
SUNON HA40201V4-0000C-C99 40mm Case cooler

Pros: Used these to replace the screaming 40mm fan in the power supply in my hadron hydro case. I placed two of them in a push/pull configuration. One in the factory location and another zip tied to the other end of the power supply. I plan to do the same for a noisy 1U server power supply I have in my basement office.

Cons: Not a lot of airflow. But that's physics. Moving air through a small space, i.e. 40mm, is noisy. You have to pick airflow or noise at this size.

Great Switch!

D-Link DGS-2205 Unmanaged 5-Port Green Technology Desktop Switch
D-Link DGS-2205 Unmanaged 5-Port Green Technology Desktop Switch

Pros: Cost Reliability

Cons: doesn't make me breakfast or get me a beer

Overall Review: There are cheaper switches, but this one is reliable, holds connections, and gets the job done. I'd buy another in a second if I needed one.

Awesome NAS

Synology DS410 Diskless System DiskStation 4-bay All-in-1 NAS Server for Home to Business Workgroup Users
Synology DS410 Diskless System DiskStation 4-bay All-in-1 NAS Server for Home to Business Workgroup Users

Pros: Expandible Customizeable Fast enough Low power use (compared to running a PC as a server)

Cons: Cost (but fair value, I think) Does not recognize many UPS's Free iSCSI software is unreliable Did not recognize my cyberpower UPS (that I loved) , so that was another $60 for an APC UPS. The free GlobalSAN iSCSI target software for mac OS X was what I tried to use for my networked Time Machine backup initially, but it is unstable and I kept losing the connection halfway into a 450GB network backup and having to start over(Ouch!). Commercial software for this purpose is several hundred dollars. It does work fine as a mapped network drive for Time Machine, but I would have preferred iSCSI.

Overall Review: This NAS is awesome. I installed DSM 3 right away. Using it with 3 Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB drives which it works great with. Write speed around ~25 MB/s(fast enough). Basic setup was a breeze, but the ability to void your software warranty and install a bunch of custom stuff is where it really shines. -I'm using it for a network Time Machine backup. -I also am now using it exclusively for my bittorrent files with a version of Transmission compiled for the synology PPC NAS. -I have used it to download from an NZB from my news host as well (there is also a program to install that will check par2 data and unRAR your stuff for you). I'm using it as a network media server as well. -I am able to access it remotely from the internet as a file server. -My old Athlon XP server with 5 500gb drives in RAID5 used about 240 watts. This box with 3 2tb drives uses about 55Watts. That's gonna save me some serious green over time. -I installed pyTivo as well, so I can move files to and from my T

Bumped my Macbook up to 6GB

Crucial 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model CT51264AC667
Crucial 4GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model CT51264AC667

Pros: Had 2 2GB sticks in the Macbook (4.1) bought in '08. Pulled one of the sticks and replaced it with this. Now up and running at 2GB. Nice to run iMovie and parallels virtual winXP at the same time. Ran memtestX and it passed with flying colors.

Cons: Cost

Awesome Drive!

Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2MH080G2R5
Intel X25-M Mainstream 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDSA2MH080G2R5

Pros: Bought this to replace a slow as snot 5400 RPM drive in the wife's laptop. Installed in about 35 minutes total, and that includes time to Ghost over the old hard drive image from an external drive. Boots WinXP in about 30 seconds. Computer no longer crippled during virus scan. Can open a folder of thousands of thumbnail images, no problem. Best single computer upgrade I have ever made. Frankly, better than buying a new laptop.

Cons: I want an SSD for my macbook.
