This is an ecellent machine

ASUS Laptop UL30 Series Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 4GB Memory 320GB HDD Intel GMA 4500MHD 13.3" Windows 7 Home Premium UL30A-X4
ASUS Laptop UL30 Series Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 4GB Memory 320GB HDD Intel GMA 4500MHD 13.3" Windows 7 Home Premium UL30A-X4

Pros: -LOOOOONNNNGG battery life (consistently 9-11 hours wifi web browsing, up to 5-6 hours of playing HD resolution videos) -nice 'feel' -really clear and crisp screen -barely gets warms, even under heavy usage -very quiet

Cons: -the touchpad is too easy too trigger. hovering my finger over the pad will frequently register accidental clicks. -the touchpad surface is mildly irritating to my fingertip after several hours of use. -too many different types of materials (aluminum, shiny black plastic, shiny white plastic, dull black plastic) undermines an otherwise elegant design. -The shiny black plastic bezel around the screen shows every little fingerprint and speck of dust and is far too easy to scratch (I noticed dozens after just a few weeks.) -The audio output seems to have some weird equalization that over emphasizes some of the bass and low mid frequencies. -the hard drive is partitioned oddly. It's 320 GB about 150 GB each for OS and DATA partitions. It would make much more sense to have 50-60 GB for the OS partition, with the rest allocated for storage. -Newegg is the only place I know with a 320 GB drive in the UL30. Everyone else seems to have 500 GB. Still enough for my needs though.

Overall Review: I really like this computer. It totally lives up to the hype. I charge it at night, run it on battery all day. It just goes forever. It's an ideal computer for a travelers, excellent for everyday web-browsing and productivity, and would make a great HTPC. It uses even less power than atom-based computers while delivering higher performance. This is one of the most satisfying computer purchases I've ever made.

Most Critical Review

Couldn't get it to do what I wanted to do

BUFFALO AirStation N150 Wireless Router - WCR-GN
BUFFALO AirStation N150 Wireless Router - WCR-GN

Pros: Small, nice aesthetics, quick to setup as a router, can configure itself for adequate security (defaults WPA2-PSK with AES, broadcasting an SSID based on its wifi adapter's MAC address, and with its default SSID, PSK, and AOSS PIN printed on a label on the device itself). If all you want is simple straightforward routing or repeating or WDS, this seems to work fairly well and at a price that can't be beat.

Cons: Can't support dd-wrt, navigating the web ui too soon after making changes can cause a condition which requires a full reset (losing ALL user settings), I couldn't get it to function as a client bridge. All the documentation seems to suggest this type of operation should be possible, but if it is, it not clear how to configure it.

Overall Review: I ordered this as somewhat of an impulse buy shortly after upgrading my network to wireless-n. My hope was to install the WCR-GN as an N-capable bridge in a corner of the house that tends to block wifi signals. After several hours over a few nights, I couldn't get it to communicate properly in the desired manner. I eventually caved and configured my old wireless-G router as a client bridge. I'll hang onto the WCR-GN, however, as I have a friend that's been asking me to help him add wifi capability to his network, and given the ease with which it can be configured as a tradtional router, I think it'll find a good home with him. (and if it ever gets a dd-wrt port, I would consider buying another)

I like it

BYTECC C6EB-15K 15 ft. Cat 6 Black Enhanced 550MHz Patch Cables
BYTECC C6EB-15K 15 ft. Cat 6 Black Enhanced 550MHz Patch Cables

Pros: It works. It's not difficult to remove like most snag-free cables. It's black so it hides well even when routed through visible areas (eg, from behind an entertainment center to a router on the other side of the room)

Cons: none come to mind.

Overall Review: The design of the snag-preventers on this cable differ from most I've seen. Typically, the snag-free cables have rubber boots around the plastic plugs that can make it difficult to operate the latch to remove the cable. These cables forego the 360 degree coverage for a simple stiff rubber flap that covers only the latch side of the plug. This seems sufficient to protect the sensitive connector if the need should arise to retrieve the cable from a cluttered area in a less than delicate manner while at the same time, does not hinder the operation of the connector's latch. I like it.

next, please

HAWKING HWUG1 Wireless-G Adapter with Removable Antenna IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Up to 108Mbps Wireless Data Rates
HAWKING HWUG1 Wireless-G Adapter with Removable Antenna IEEE 802.11b/g USB 2.0 Up to 108Mbps Wireless Data Rates

Pros: detailed setup instructions detachable/replaceable antenna

Cons: couldn't connect to my network

Overall Review: I picked one of these up after moving a desktop computer past the radius of the cable it was networked through. Rather than running a new wire, I figured I'd go wireless. My wifi network is configured to use WPA2-Personal with AES+TKIP and MAC filtering. After going through the routine of adding and double checking the MAC address and reconfirming my key several times, it still would not connect. I tried new drivers, physically moving the adapter, setting different channels, using different USB ports, and cutting/pasting a new key. After hours of frustration, I moved the adapter to my laptop. Its built-in WIFI had no problem estabishing and maintaining connections but when I switched over to the hawking card, even with all the same settings and the same 2/5 bar strength it wouldn't connect. So this thing's going back to the store (and apologies to new egg for buying at a brick'n'mortar but I was in a hurry. silver lining: you don't have to deal with the RMA)

Works as advertised

KINGWIN ATK-25U-S Aluminum 2.5" Silver SATA I/II USB 2.0 External Enclosure
KINGWIN ATK-25U-S Aluminum 2.5" Silver SATA I/II USB 2.0 External Enclosure

Pros: I bought this to facilitate migration from an old laptop to a new one. I just pulled the drive out my old one, plugged it into this enclosure, then copied everything I wanted over the new one. No fuss. It came with an appropriately sized screwdriver to install the drive in the enclosure, a pouch to carry the enclosure and its cable, and a Y-cable to allow the drive draw power from 2 USB ports (although in my case, a single plug worked fine)

Cons: the activity light far brighter than it needs to be.

Overall Review: If you don't mind the bulk, hard drives are far cheaper than flash drives. 2.5" drives use so little power that they don't need an external power supply. If you happen to have an old laptop, something like this can be pretty handy for temporary or portable storage if you need more than the single-digit number of gigabytes on a flash drive at a price point similar to one of these enclosures.

not bad.

SENNHEISER MX660 black 3.5 mm Gold-Plate Connector Earbud headphone with Basswind
SENNHEISER MX660 black 3.5 mm Gold-Plate Connector Earbud headphone with Basswind

Pros: -Not horribly expensive -nice extras like a foam block to wind the wire and a coin-purse thing to carry them in. -not uncomfortable -Mostly good sound

Cons: -frequency response seems just a little 'off'. Bass and low mids seem a little boosted. The relative lack of treble kills clarity. -volume slider seems kind of pointless (volume can be cut approx. 50%). I would rather have a less expensive product without it. I never use it. -after only a few weeks of light use, one of the foam covers for the earpiece has fallen off and gotten lost. and I just can't seat the earpiece properly to get a good sound without it
