ASUS Quality

ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS

Pros: As is usually the case with ASUS, quality is high on this board. I'm pleased with the features and the reliability -- I've had no problems whatsoever. The price is good, and the board is full-featured. I've had no issues with it since purchase about six months ago.

Cons: None spring to mind.

Overall Review: I purchased this as a replacement for an Asrock board that didn't work with m Ivy Bridge processor (despite claiming Ivy Bridge support). It seems like every time I purchase a motherboard other than ASUS I end up with some sort of problems. ASUS has always been rock solid reliable in my experience.

Most Critical Review

Board will not work OOTB with Ivy Bridge processors

ASRock Z68 PRO3 GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASRock Z68 PRO3 GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: Presumably it's a great board if you can get it to boot. Unfortunately if you're using it for a new build with an Ivy Bridge that's not possible.

Cons: After assembling my system I was greeted only by 4 beeps. No video output and no other indication of what might be wrong. After researching this issue I discovered that the motherboard ships with BIOS version 1.20, but 2.10 is required for Ivy Bridge Processors. Unless you happen to have a Sandy Bridge available to perform the BIOS update, this makes using the board with an Ivy Bridge impossible.

Overall Review: This was my first Asrock purchase. I won't be making another, and will stick with Asus in the future. I am returning the motherboard to Newegg. To their credit, they handled the return process quickly and efficiently.

Does what it says it does, doesn't work miracles

NETGEAR XAVB1004-100NAS Powerline AV Adapter Kit With Ethernet Switch Up to 200Mbps
NETGEAR XAVB1004-100NAS Powerline AV Adapter Kit With Ethernet Switch Up to 200Mbps

Pros: Easy to use: just plug it in

Cons: Not as fast as other options

Overall Review: This works and does what I need it to. I use it to create a wired bridge between two adjacent rooms and that's fine. Throughput is around 80 Mbps which is fast enough for my purposes but slower than 802.11N or wired ethernet. As long as you understand the product and it's limits there's no problem.

ViewSonic VA2248m-LED Black 22" Full HD LED BackLight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 250 cd/m2 DC 10,000,000:1 (1,000:1)
ViewSonic VA2248m-LED Black 22" Full HD LED BackLight LCD Monitor w/Speakers 250 cd/m2 DC 10,000,000:1 (1,000:1)

Pros: Good image quality, seems to be solidly built. The buttons are placed on the side of the monitor towards the back -- this makes them easily accessible, without cluttering up the front of the display.

Cons: The built-in speakers are terrible. Then again, if you're the sort who uses the built-in speakers on your monitor, this may not bother you.

It is exactly what it says it is

Rosewill RIKB-11002 Slim Keyboard with Low Profile Chiclet Keycap Design - Retail
Rosewill RIKB-11002 Slim Keyboard with Low Profile Chiclet Keycap Design - Retail

Pros: I work with Macs professionally, and as a consequence have become comfortable with low profile 'chiclet' style keyboards, to the point where a full size or mechanical keyboard feels uncomfortable for me. I purchased this as a replacement for my gaming PC, and have been quite pleased with it overall.

Cons: It's a very basic keyboard, but what do you expect for $15? A USB port or two would be nice, but I'm not complaining.

Overall Review: It seems like most PC enthusiasts prefer a mechanical keyboard, so this board won't work well for them. For me, it's perfect.

Good entry level receiver

YAMAHA RX-V371 3D 5.1-Channel AV Receiver
YAMAHA RX-V371 3D 5.1-Channel AV Receiver

Pros: This is a good receiver for the price. It pushes 100w per channel and has 4 HDMI inputs, both good features to have and rare at this price point. I'm pleased with the sound quality, and have had no trouble with the HDMI switching or decoding. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it also does support CEC, which helps to reduce the remote juggling that otherwise often occurs -- turn a device on, and the receiver will automatically switch the input for you. Hit the volume button on your TV remote, and it adjusts the receiver volume. Turn off the TV, the receiver turns off with it. It's very handy.

Cons: No on-screen display, though the fron LCD display is easy to work with. More troubling is that sometimes I lose sound output for no apparent reason. Turning the receiver off and then on again resolves the problem, but I'm concerned that this could be a sign that the receiver is faulty. A phono input would be nice, but it's not a big challenge to run my receiver through a pre-amp, and phono inputs do seem to be a rare commodity these days.

Overall Review: I bought a refurb with full foreknowledge that it may not be 100%. This is ultimately just intended to keep me going for a year or so, at which point I'll upgrade to a more recent model. I'm overall happy with the receiver and will likely purchase another Yamaha when the time comes.
