Just great

LIAN LI Black Aluminum PC-C33B ATX Media Center / HTPC Case
LIAN LI Black Aluminum PC-C33B ATX Media Center / HTPC Case

Pros: Design! Has clean lines, love the brushed look. I also own a Lian Li mid tower case. So many of the other popluar cases are gaudy and flasshy and look terrible, that is aimed at 12 year olds. These have an elegant and clean look. Case is quiet, I have a 65w i5 with stock cooler, blu ray, SSD, and 4 mechanical hard drives in this case. The rubber grommets that are used to mount the hard drives isolate the vibrations keeping the case quiet. The fans are quiet, hardly hear the thing at all. Plenty of space inside (for a HTPC case), the drive cages being removable really help for installation. didnt have any issues getting all the hardware including a HD6850 in there. Good internal airflow, the side venting allows outside air in, and the fans blowing out the back help keep a nice flow of air in and out. the i5 is peaking at 38C with the stock cooler.

Cons: Would have been nice to have ONE more drive bay avalable for hard drives. You get 3 drives in the 3.5 cage, then one slot on the 5.25 cage is already modified for a 3.5 drive plus the 2 5.25 bays. After a blu ray, and IR reciever I only was able to get the 4 mechanical drives in the cages, had to zip tie the SSD to the outside of the cage. Not a deal killer, as I doubt a lot of people are planning on putting 8T of storage in an HTPC.

Overall Review: It was apx the same width as my A/V reciever, though much deeper at 18". I knew this going in, but it means my next project is to custom build a new entertainment center. Oh well! At least my day job is in carpentry!

Perfect for high end HTPC

ASRock Z68M/USB3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
ASRock Z68M/USB3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: total of 6 SATA ports, 2 sata3. I was able to put blu ray and SSD system drive on the sata3, and 4 mechanical drives on the sata2 without issues. the mechanical drives raided up without trouble. Z68 is great for the advanced features like quick sync. Many people here had issues with DOA boards, obviously mine was fine.

Cons: Nothing

Overall Review: this board setup without issues, and my ASRock extream4 board in my desktop has been running for almost a year now and no issues at all. All in all, a great value option, as I used to use ASUS, but the new features on those boards just jack up the cost and really dont seem to add much to the end user experience. I have been very happy with my ASRock boards.

Discard the directions

Antec Mult-Station Basic Internal IR receiver and remote
Antec Mult-Station Basic Internal IR receiver and remote

Pros: Reciever matches my black Lian Li HTPC case very well. Wide angle of effectivness. Works with Logitech Harmony remotes (see other thoughts) Accepts input without any noticable lag.

Cons: Directions are terrible. The software is not very intuitive after the initial remote selection (3 options, 2 versions of their own remotes or a MCE remote). The HD frame software is total garbage, its cheesy and VERY non-intuitive. The included mini remote is definatly a throw away. If you are using this with WMC pick up a cheap harmony or other MCE remote.

Overall Review: I put this in a new HTPC with a Ceton Infinitv tuner card to take over the duty of my 3 cable boxes through Windows Media Center. That all worked, but following the directions to get the logitech harmony one remote to work with this was a nightmare. And it didnt have to be. The trick was instead of using soundgraph or imon in the logitech software you set the logitech remote as a generic MCE remote. I spent hours looking for the solution and kept seeing all these remapping or other such workarounds that were massivly involved when it was just a matter of setting up the remote as MCE remote. Works great now.
