This review is from: NETGEAR FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall Switch
Pros: -This thing is rock solid. I've had it for seven years now and it's still going strong (however it isn't my primary router as of this year due to upgrading network for WiFi).
-Wonderful administration interface.
Cons: -Lost one port (port 8) after about 3 years, but all other ports work.
Other Thoughts: -I've remember that this router had a lifetime warranty when I bought it originally (2005) but that looks to have changed now according to what I see on this site now.
-You should take from this review that even though I've lost a port, I still will sing this thing praises, that's how good I feel of a product it is.
-I wish oh how I wish that they made this with WiFi or else I'd have stuck with it for my primary router.
Pros: -Excellent WiFi range on 2.4 GHz, darn near to the end of the city block.
-I like the interface to this router.
-Nice footprint, though I wish I could hang it on the wall.
-No external antennas.
Cons: -Poor WiFi range on 5.0 GHz, maybe 20-25 ft.
-Nearly every time you power cycle this router, no matter if by the power button OR even REBOOT from being logged into the router, the power led flashes amber and the firmware becomes corrupted. Intermittently starts good if I leave it unplugged for a while, then plug in only the power, then WAN cable, then LAN wires, then it'll come up, This is the second N900 that I've had, both with the same problem however eventually I couldn't resurrect the first one any longer so took it back for this one, hoping that the first was a fluke. Nope, seems to be par for the course for this touchy piece of equipment.
Other Thoughts: If you never have a power failure in your house, or you very un-often change your settings that require a reboot of the router, then this thing is very fast.
Thank goodness I keep a spare NETGEAR ProSafe VPN Firewall FVS318 (has one bad port out of 8, gonna have to RMA that some time, but it currently is very handy for a quick backup if need be like tonight. Other than the bad port, this thing has been rock solid, I only wanted to add faster WIFi to my network than what I have on my lan, have connected another old <another brand> WiFi router so added this N900).
For added info, the first N900 I replaced after 1 month after updating the Firmware because it said it was available. This N900, I purchased in March 2013, It is now November 2013. It has acted this way since the day I bought it, but I figured I'd live with it as-is. I did NOT update the firmware on this one, however, even though it also says that there is an update (nope nope nope, not gonna do it).
Pros: Ran well for 1 1/2 years.
Pretty darn quiet.
Cons: Ran for only 1 1/2 years.
Other Thoughts: Hopefully their warrantee will cover it. All of a sudden had bright POP and that was that.READ FULL REVIEW
