UPDATE
Pros: Works great after initial setup and install issues are overcome. Hardware seems solid.
Cons: Software needs work.
Overall Review: As a follow up to my previous review, we were able to interrupt the firmware update after 24 hours with no ill effect. Downloaded the ZIP file from their website and the enclosed executable flashed the firmware promptly. Highly advised to use this method instead of complying with the prompt to allow the web console to do it for you. Buffalo still needs to fix this so others don't waste a whole day of work like I did.
Never Buying from Buffalo Again
Pros: It worked great for about 2 months. Hold time for tech support was not too long. Tech support was friendly even though there was not much he could do to help.
Cons: Poor quality. Drives are cheap, parts unreliable. RAID controller went bad. No way to know if the data is intact until we receive the warranty replacement unit and plug in the drives. But when will it arrive? No one knows because Buffalo does not provide tracking numbers on warranty replacements! 5 days later and they tell me it still has not even shipped yet. No way to know when to expect it. Just have to keep calling them every day or so.
Overall Review: With everything we purchase online we expect a confirmation e-mail with a tracking number. NewEgg does a great job with that. Why can't Buffalo do the same with advance RMA warranty replacement? I've provided proof of purchase and my credit card info to cover a warranty replacement that may or may not show up in a few days or weeks? This lack of responsiveness on the part of Buffalo convinces me to never do business with them again.
Firmware will not update!
Pros: When it works, it works great. Once you get the setup issues resolved these have been pretty solid units over the long run. Kudos for being able to get tech support on the phone without too long of a wait.
Cons: Past experience setting these up for clients has always involved calls to tech support because of something not working properly right out of the box. This time was no exception. Firmware update hung (there are numerous complaints about this on the forums) and has been going almost 24 hours now.
Overall Review: It prompted me to update firmware as soon as I logged in to the web console and I fell for it! The browser screen warns not to refresh the screen to interrupt - yet displays NO indication of any kind that it's making progress. Tech support says just leave it alone overnight. 24 hours later now... it is still going. This is a problem that Buffalo needs to address rather than telling me over the phone to not update it that way. Don't ship software that prompts me to start a process that's unreliable and does not show any kind of progress bar to indicate whether or not it's working. Fix it!
