The glory of 16 gigs

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin PC RAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin PC RAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL

Pros: 8 gigs was enough but 16 gigs means I'll be running vmware servers on my machine to talk to my ESXi boxes whilst I play Skyrim. Plus there is always bragging rights. "What, you only have 8 gigs of ram? No, no, I'm not calling you poor..."

Cons: After 20 plus minutes of flopping around like a catfish trying to reach my PC in the abyss of a dark corner and installing the ram I came back to a sitting position only to power up my computer to a blank screen and total blackness... Had to put the original ram back in and start reading online for a solution. Ended up being a mother bios update that fixed it up.

Overall Review: Unfortunately I know what the carpet smells like around where my feet are.

Most Critical Review

not very good

SAMSUNG HMX-H204 Black 1/4.1" CMOS 2.7" 230K Touch LCD 20X Optical Zoom 16GB SSD Full HD Camcorder
SAMSUNG HMX-H204 Black 1/4.1" CMOS 2.7" 230K Touch LCD 20X Optical Zoom 16GB SSD Full HD Camcorder

Pros: small size, convenient menus, somewhat acceptable video

Cons: numerous. Let me say this. The video quality was not good and not at all what I was expecting. It tries to cover up the very heavy handed compression algorithm by trying to slightly over define color/contrast edges. Other things such as hair, grass, etc can turn into video mud. If the colors and or contrast are too close (this happened a lot in my testing) it literally gives up on any notion of clarity and turns that area into a blurred approximation blob. I thought I was doing something wrong or the camera was just a bad apple until I had finished testing every white balance and quality setting there was on the camera under different lighting conditions. I even bought another high speed data card for it thinking maybe the on-board ram was jacked. I was still willing to try and live with this camera "UNTIL" I tried takings stills with it. My jaw dropped. Not because the pictures were stunning btw but because they had worse compression artifacts than the video. Horrible waste

Overall Review: I am a computer enthusiast since the mid 80's (currenly work as a network admin) and worked in TV and video production as a cinematographer/editor years ago. So, the perspective on this camera is more objective than subjective. It has some decent points but I'd be reluctant to pay half what I did for the quality of the video it produced. If I had known beforehand I certainly wouldn't have bought this camera.

VMware ESXi 5

MSI 890GXM-G65 AM3 AMD 890GX USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI 890GXM-G65 AM3 AMD 890GX USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: It worked. Was somewhat a good looking board.

Cons: More fan headers please. For what you pay 2 seems a little cheap.

Overall Review: I was building a new VMware ESXi whitebox for server development and I wanted to go as compact as possible and still accommodate both a PCIe multiport network controller card and a PCIe Perc 5i raid controller. With the exception of having to blank out two pins on the perc card (known smbus error) it has worked well so far. Wanted to go with a microatx board to get the size down and put in a microatx tower with a 2.5" hot swap drive bay. Want my ESXi solution to be more portable (micro atx cases with carry handles).

Very Dependable

CISCO ASA5510-SEC-BUN-K9 ASA 5510 SSM Security Appliance
CISCO ASA5510-SEC-BUN-K9 ASA 5510 SSM Security Appliance

Pros: It just works reliably Smartnet Contracts. Some would consider this a minus but they will assist with any configuration issues you may have and they ship quickly. I have never regretted money on a smartnet contract.

Cons: Not cheap Cisco CLI is not for the faint of heart.

Overall Review: I've worked with a lot of servers and network equipment. One thing I always look for is something that just keeps on doing its job reliably. This thing has fallen into that category. For three years it ran 43 remote office tunnels and countless remote access sessions and never suffered from performance issues. The only time it has been down is when I've upgraded the IOS.

It had potential

RAZER Naga Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming Mouse
RAZER Naga Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming Mouse

Pros: bunch of buttons that could be really useful. blue light matched case and n52.

Cons: I am an average sized adult with average sized hands. Wanted to get that out of the way before I continue. I have to have some pressure on the mouse to move it. Usually this is my palm resting on the mouse. I also have to pick the mouse up and move it occasionally which is usually accomplished with my thumb and pinky finger. If I try to rest my palm on it my finger tips extend out past the index/middle finger buttons and this makes the buttons click too easily (read, misclicks). This also makes it hard for me click the twelve buttons on the side because if I rest my palm on it my thumb is too far forward. K, can't rest the palm on it. Next.. So now I move my palm back (dead air) and the mouse is being moved and controlled by my finger tips. This lead to numerous problems. Bottom line was it was too small for me. Oh, those two buttons off to the left of the index finger. TOTALLY useless. The majority of people will have to lift their hand off of the mouse to click them.

Overall Review: I'm wandering if this was an adaptation of an autocad mouse or similar. It is just too small to be of any use. If you haven't reached adulthood yet or are diminutive then this mouse may be for you. Unfortunately I bought two because I buy one for my main computer and another for my backup computer. Both useless to me. I just ordered the Logitech gaming mouse. I love my old Logitech gaming mouse but I need a few more buttons for Wow.

it works

BTI Replacement UPS Battery For APC RBC22
BTI Replacement UPS Battery For APC RBC22

Pros: At least half the price of APC replacement batteries. Came in the tray also (I was expecting to have individual batteries)

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: I've had a rack mount UPS for several years now to protect my lab servers and Cisco equipment. Prior to this I simply had a few power strips and was losing servers and equipment. I bought a APC Smart UPS and haven't lost one since. Of course the batteries can only take so many lightning storms and power drops before they give out. Glad companies still make them for my unit. It is amazing to graph your power out over and day and realize how rarely the power is in specs and you can see the sags and over voltage. When I realized how "unclean" the power was I started running everything important to me on a UPS of some sort.
