Most Favorable Review

Nice unit, but could use some improvements

ICY DOCK ICYCube MB561U3S-4S 4 Bay USB 3.0 & eSATA(PM) Hot Swap 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDD/SSD External Enclosure - White
ICY DOCK ICYCube MB561U3S-4S 4 Bay USB 3.0 & eSATA(PM) Hot Swap 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDD/SSD External Enclosure - White

Pros: - works well with eSata and MB with eSata port multiplier enabled chipset or PCIe eSata with port multiplier card - nice aluminum design - reliable when working (had power supply issues after 2 years)

Cons: - fan is fairly loud but not disturbingly. - fan is 80mm and could benefit from better quality, quieter 92mm - fan is not easy to swap - power supply is built in and not using high quality caps as had power failure after 2 years which caused drives to start dropping out and not spin up correctly. Would benefit from external brick design or use high quality Japanese caps. - trays require mounting drive, would be nice to have trayless design

Overall Review: Nice unit but old design that needs some updating and improvements.

3 drive failures, I'm done

SAMSUNG SpinPoint P80 Series SP1614N 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA133 / ATA-7 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG SpinPoint P80 Series SP1614N 160GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA133 / ATA-7 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: None

Cons: 3 drive failures in less than 2 years. 2 were SMART Threshold exceeded, which tech said is a definite drive failure. I would never buy another Samsung and would strongly advise anyone against them. I have owned tons of hard drives over the years and only had 2 fail me (The Deskstar GXP and a Maxtor).

Failed after just under 3 yrs.

ICY DOCK MB561US-4S-1 Aluminum / Plastic 4 x 3.5" SATA I/II USB 2.0 & eSATA Aluminum HDD Enclosure for Mac & PC
ICY DOCK MB561US-4S-1 Aluminum / Plastic 4 x 3.5" SATA I/II USB 2.0 & eSATA Aluminum HDD Enclosure for Mac & PC

Pros: Thankfully still under warranty. I will report back on warranty process. Worked perfect without issue for several years on eSata.

Cons: Failed in just under 3 years. Failed working with 4 drives and worked with one in unit and then that even stopped working. Drives test fine in other external enclosures, report healthy in SMART, and eSata port and cable all tested. USB or eSata neither working now, unit dead. Waiting for Icy Dock to issue RMA. The fan on this was always very loud on high. I never noticed this since unit was always on. Now my office is near silent without this device off and I have 4 computers in this office. They really need a better fan or better design with 120 fan instead of 80. Bad build quality to fail with limited (less 3 years) usage in cool AC environment. I have several computer peripherals going on 6+ years. Sad since unit is great looking, good design except for fan and need of trays.

Overall Review: Looking for other options and brands in enclosures for future as do not like loud fan and depend on build quality for business. Would love to see a 5 or 6 day trayless aluminum with 120 fan design. But that beast does not exist.

old version 3.5, no upgrades either

Comments: My first disappointment with newegg.com. There was no version # listed for this software so I assumed it would be the latest version 4.5. After I downloaded it from the newegg it turned out to be v3.5 which is close to a year old. When I checked WebRoot site to see if I can upgrade to the latest version, it seems you can only do this if you purchase it from them. Called newegg for a refund and am still waiting for it.
