update on Synology NAS

Synology DS412+ Diskless System High-Performance & Easy to Manage 4-bay All-in-1 NAS Server for SMB Users
Synology DS412+ Diskless System High-Performance & Easy to Manage 4-bay All-in-1 NAS Server for SMB Users

Pros: Now that I've owned this device for about 4 months, I can appreciate it even more. I've tried a number of the packages and I'm able to see my photos and watch videos on all of my devices - anywhere I have an internet connection (usually a strong wifi signal is very helpful). I can sync files with their Cloud Station software, and although it's a little slower than Dropbox, my files are on my server and not someone else's that's out of my control and prevue. A large part of the popularity of Synology is the software that accompanies their NAS systems. Although not perfect, it's wonderfully thought out and with a little bit of tweaking, runs great. Phone support is always there, but not great. There are forums that are sometimes helpful, and with a good bit of patience, it's a smooth-running, mean NAS machine. The website is good and they are regularly updating their software packages. I'm very happy with it.

Cons: I found that I have to use their proprietary SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID), so I won't ever be able to move these drives intact to a non-Synology NAS. On the plus side, SHR doesn't waste as much space as RAID 5. I would recommend using this from the start with mixed size drives and save yourself a lot of time rebuilding your RAID as an afterthought

Overall Review: If you've decide to buy the DS412+, stick with NAS-compatible drives (i.e., WD RED drives). They run cooler. I haven't had them for a very long time, so can't comment on reliability, but they're manufactured with NAS in mind. So if you're already investing a good chunk of $$ in your NAS, why not go the extra mile and get NAS hard drives?
