What a bargain!

PNY XLR8 GeForce 9800 GT 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card VCG98GTEE1XEB
PNY XLR8 GeForce 9800 GT 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card VCG98GTEE1XEB

Pros: -True single slot solution -Energy-efficient upgrade for modifying a mass-production big brand desktop PC (eg. HP/Compaq or Dell) to do moderate to high-intensity 3D gaming -Hybrid Power SLI & 2-way SLI supported (with an Nvidia Geforce 8000-series or N-Force 750i or 780i -based Mobo and/or another Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT or GTX -With mail-in rebate, less expensive than than competing brands' 512MB GDDR3 -Includes support for both HDMI and VGA interface via adapter as well as dual DVI, native connection. -Easy install with room to spare in my COMPAQ SR5710-Y mid-tower with Iris-8 ECS micro-ATX Mobo -Frees up the PCI-e (x1) slot next to it for the eSATA/SATA card I need to add a second optical drive and external hard drive! -Quiet fan -256-bit interface and 1 gig of GDDR3= much better performance than the Sparkle GeForce 9500GT it's replacing for me! -Newegg and UPS got it to me in 5-days, door-to-door, in the middle of the holidays, for the cost of a $2.99 RUSH processing!

Cons: -Fan exhausts into case, rather than behind it, which might be considered a big 'pro', if you have a case with good airflow and a desk without much space behind the case. -Not technically SILENT like the passive heat sink on the Sparkle 9500 GT ( but darn close!) -Rebate wasn't instant -Newegg dropped the price another 5 dollars after I bought mine (not a con for you, if you buy one NOW)

Overall Review: -I haven't tried, yet, but I understand the driver CD also includes an OC utility -My desktop configuration is stock Compaq, except for the replacement of the PSU with Rosewill RX-850 (SLI-ready, 80+ certified, 850 watts) and swapping the 3 GB generic stock PC2-6400 RAM with a Crucial Ballistix 4-gig dual channel kit, both from Newegg!

Most Critical Review

cheap, flexible ext. storage solution

SABRENT EC-UEIS7 Aluminum 3.5" IDE / SATA USB & eSATA External Enclosure
SABRENT EC-UEIS7 Aluminum 3.5" IDE / SATA USB & eSATA External Enclosure

Pros: -Price -Value -Features-IDE&SATA-II internal connections, USB 2.0&eSATA external jacks -Sturdy, mostly aluminum chasis construction with only the side panels (which hide your wires and drive screws) constructed of plastic. -Understated/classic matte black finish -dual LEDs (red & blue) for power and drive activity. -Quiet active cooling with (1) 80mm fan. -Flexibility in placement: (1) lying flat with exhaust fan facing up or (2) standing on edge with exhaust to the left or right

Cons: -Questionable reliability, reading previous reviews and with my experience of SATA power connector burnout after two months of extremely light use. - As previous recent review mentioned: not much space for internal connections with a 3.5" HDD. -As at least one older review noted: limited to USB 2.0 connectivity, externally, with IDE drive, and eSATA with SATA-II drive. -Not truly hot-swappable if you're using it with SATA/eSATA configuration either, since, as at least one other reviewer noted, you will need to re-boot to get the drive recognized, unless you make your connections and power-up the drive before your PC.

Overall Review: -Does not include eSATA cable, so you'll need to purchase one of those if you are planning on using it with an SATA HDD, though you should be OK if you're planning on using this with only IDE, whether ATA-33, 100, or 133, since a short USB 2.0 cable is provided, along with the external power supply and cord. -You might want to consider purchasing the extended warranty with this enclosure (and maybe the drive if you're purchasing a new one with it) to save the hassle of manufacturer's warranty service;>) -I'm planning to update this when I find out what kind of response I get from the manufacturer.

Sturdy, good value 4 perfromance

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AA80A
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model BL2KIT12864AA80A

Pros: -Much better performance than the unmatched (cas-5) 3gigs of generic RAM that comes std. in a Compaq Presario these days! -'Feel' is quality, with aluminum heat spreaders which add rigidity and weight. -LIMITED Lifetime warranty(see below) -Stable for about 18mos (see below) -RMA process was painless -option to 'cross-ship' if you're willing to put down a deposit on the replacement

Cons: -need a deposit with rma, if you want to get your replacement sticks shipped before Crucial receives the defective items. -rma without deposit may mean you're left without a working PC for 1-2weeks -In order to get the CAS-4 latency, 4-4-4-12 timing you have to set it manually, with most systems' advanced BIOS settings, per tech support. -May require 3rd party utility to get settings correct, I used the latest version of NVIDIA System Tools.

Overall Review: -Limited lifetime warranty means as long as they're making a comparable product, Crucial/Micron will replace the product, but failing that they depreciate the item's value pretty aggressively and give credit towards the purchase of another item. -I had no complaints before installing in custom-build (750a SLI-based) system, along with a (new) second (4gig) kit. Soon after x-fer to this PC from my basic Compaq Presario (SR 5710Y), started having BSOD errors, eventually with message implicating a memory failure. -Technical support representatives seem very knowledgeable, though customer support seems easily confused about anything more than the basic policies and product lines. -If you want to 'underclock' to CAS-5 or higher, the tech I spoke to recommended decreasing voltage to 1.8v, explaining that the mismatch between voltage and timings usually set automatically could potentially cause early failure/shortened lifetime that I experienced. -System tools allows multiple profiles.

Great VGA upgrade!

PNY GeForce 9800 GT 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card VCG98GTEE1XPB
PNY GeForce 9800 GT 1GB DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 SLI Support Video Card VCG98GTEE1XPB

Pros: -Cost, less than a C-note after rebate when I bought -Value, performer on all the RPGs and MMOs I've played -Power efficiency-No need for PSU upgrade when installed in my Compaq Presario SR5710Y -Plenty of GDDR3 RAM for even HD-res video (1080p/i) -easy 5% O/C using free NVidia System tools utility download -true 1-slot VGA upgrade solution for "big-box" store desktop PC purchase -able to utilitize CUDA cores to off-load CPU and significantly speed up proc-intensive tasks like video conversion (eg. wmv to mp4 format) -great improvement over previous dedicated gpu upgrade 9500gt 1gb performance: 32->112-cores, 128->256-bit interface, gddr2/800MHz to gddr3/1800MHz RAM -hybrid SLI capable if you pair it with an 8-series integrated gpu-equipped mobo, if you are running windows Vista -SLI-supported, when paired with another 9800gt or gtx/gtx+ (gold finger-equipped) vga, assuming you have a mobo with two PCI-e x16 or PCI-e (v2.0) x8 expansion slots, as well as an SLI bridge.

Cons: -Cooler is fan-equipped, therefore not silent. -Cooler exhausts inside case, but shouldn't cause problems with overheating, as long as you have reasonable air-flow. -brand-new price is still not under $100, without rebate:( -It's hard to find free-shipping deals on this card now, since two newer generations of GeForce cards are higher sales priorities for re-sellers, now:(

Overall Review: -Offers a 5-year limited warranty, with registration on PNY's website, 3-year if you skip registration. -If the warranty's not a real consideration (ie. this is just a short-term investment), you may want to consider getting the 're-furb' of this same model -There's always a trade-off between compactness and efficiency of cooler, but if you consider that your total system investment is at least a few to several times what you spend on a low to mid-level VGA, you can justify spending a little more to cool your whole system with a few well-placed case coolers, knowing you saved at least as much getting this card rather than a GeForce 460 or 580. -This card performs well with: WOW, GW (prophesies, factions, & nightfall), Witcher, Saboteur, Star Wars KOTR, DragonAge Origins Ultimate Edition; all max settings. -I have also been pleased with its performance in Folding @ Home -I'm considering buying another to "go -SLI" with a custom-build gaming rig based on an nForce 750a mobo.

The Best Value in DAO!

Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition PC Game
Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition PC Game

Pros: -Best value, includes original game, expansion and 7 Down-Load Content (DLC) modules that originally sold for a total of over $100! -No need to download the DLC modules, they're on the second DVD-ROM included in the package! -Includes patch 1.4, which seems to solve several issues that caused the original release to crash. -DLCs have recommendations about when to play, related to original DAO & Awakenings expansion, though you can play them at any time once you complete exploration of the first town (Lothering)following the "origin story" for your main player character. -DLCs include an additional 'Hero' character to help with more difficult battles, another encounter with Morrigan, a new fortress to act as 'base camp', complete with item storage, merchant & weaponsmith services, more items available through the merchant at the original base camp (including "thoughtful gifts" to help with romance options)

Cons: -Still requires DVD-ROM #1 in the drive while playing, though that's preferable to a copy-protection scheme that requires internet access, as far as I'm concerned. -"Romance sequence" (with Morrigan and a male main character) is a bit disappointing, due to presence of additional undergarments DEFINITELY NOT there before the scene, if you know what I mean;)

Overall Review: -I received this as a Christmas gift from family, who purchased it through another online vendor.

PAIN!

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm PC Game
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm PC Game

Pros: *Worldwide players community in the millions *Easy to lose yourself in the intricacies of the world of Azeroth *Doesn't require the bleeding edge of VGA or broadband technology to play, especially if you're casual (read: still have a life outside WoW) *New client software allows for D/L & install of majority of patch data while you play

Cons: *Easy to lose track of your "off-line" life when you get playing! *Requires not only the standard game, but both Burning Crusade and Wrath of The Litch King expansions to play *Even when you purchase the DVD ROM "box" version, rather than the digital download, installation still requires a very large download, initially. *Many issues with Blizzard Downloader function if you have software and/or hardware/router firewall set up on your PC, even after you have the ports configured for the software. *A lot of experienced players have an elitist attitude towards new players (see thoughts below). *No NPCs to join your group for dungeon play, if you don't have established friends to play with it's a real gamble when you let their servers establish your dungeon-running party. *~$15 per month, whether you set up a monthly automatic payment plan (credit, debit or bank draft) or pre-pay with the cards carried by Blizzard ent.(battlenet.com), and many other online re-sellers, NewEgg inc.

Overall Review: *I've actually had to re-boot (Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit & Win 7 Pro 32-bit) in Safe Mode in order to successfully finish the initial installation. *If you're new to MMOs you may want to start with another title, like Guild Wars, which still doesn't have a monthly service fee; Player vs. Player, Guild vs. Guild, and Player vs. Environment are more distinct and not necessarily restricted by server; It still has the robust support and a very large worldwide community, though it's not quite as intricate an online game experience (eg. only five character classes; no crafting, though you can salvage and upgrade gear, weapons, and armor).
