SPDIF not right

ASUS A8V-XE 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS A8V-XE 939 VIA K8T890 ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Runs fast and seems very stable.

Cons: Couldn't get SPDIF output to work properly. ASUS technical assistance is useless, but i'm failry sure that my issue is systemic; software for the on-board audio has no setting for SPDIF only.

Overall Review: Looking at the other reviews, please note... PCI-E x 16 is not supported by XP prior to SP2 so EVERYONE will have PCI issues installing windows if you have an original (pre-SP2) XP installation CD. There is however a method of upgrading your OEM XP disk to SP2 and making it bootable.

Most Critical Review

Electrically Good - Mechanically Bad

Wintec One 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 3OH16009U9H-8GK
Wintec One 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 3OH16009U9H-8GK

Pros: I have not done any speed tests, but the memory seems to perform very well and was quickly identified and correctly clocked by my Asus MB.

Cons: The modules come with a large heat sink (as shown), but the manufacturer does not take much (if any) effort in attaching the heatsinks to the DIMMs. In VERY light handling, the heatsinks both fell apart in my hands. If you purchase these, be prepared to glue the heatsinks back onto the DIMMs or accept that they are attached so sloppily that there will not be much if any thermal transfer.

Worst Player Ever Created

SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ 2.4" Blue 4GB MP3 / MP4 Player SDMX20R-004GB-A57
SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ 2.4" Blue 4GB MP3 / MP4 Player SDMX20R-004GB-A57

Pros: looks shiny

Cons: Has exhibited about every failure mode I can think of... I try to list some of them here: * No boot * No reboot * Card reload for no reason * Card partial load * Card incorrect load * Lockup while paused * Lockup while playing * ID3 no-read * ID3 miss-read * Songs played partially (ends prematurely) * Non-Random Shuffle * To-Go list programmed incorrectly and can't be used * Navigation - every aspect of navigation

Overall Review: As an engineer, I can not conceive of any way this device could be worse - best I can say is that it has on occasion played music (until you touch it).

Never again, Biostar - NEVER

BIOSTAR A880G+ AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
BIOSTAR A880G+ AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: Powered up

Cons: Well I already reviewed this item once (3 eggs) after I first purchased it, and now I'm updating the review 5 months later. When I first received the MB the audio did not work as well as a couple other minor issues. Biostar fixed the audio and retured the board without addressing the other issues I had listed. Since then, I have had continual issues that I have been trying to diagnose and have now found out that the on-board network adaptor has been the primary contributor to those other issues - thank you to all the other reviewers who wrote about NIC issues and led me down this path. Now in reflection, I've spent $10 shipping the board back the first time, $30 on a video adaptor that I don't need (part of my diagnosing), and 5 months of messing around with the thing trying to get it to work properly. In addition, if you think you're getting a deal with a rebate, don't. 5m after purchase, my rebate is still "APPROVED: Payment Pending" and that is after I contacted them.

Overall Review: I have been building computers for over 10 years, and this is about the worst MB I've dealt with in recent memory. Bad enough in fact that I'm taking Biostar off of my list of MB vendors for my side-business. The fact that this MB got some kind of Newegg award must be based on the fact that it's cheap I guess. I would say that "you get what you pay for", but the truth is you will likely end up paying more for this board before you're done than if you had just bought a competitor in the first place (and you'll probably never get your rebate check).

Could not get a driver to work with XP-Pro

Rosewill RC-209-EX PCI 2.3, 32bit, 33/66Mhz SATA Controller Card
Rosewill RC-209-EX PCI 2.3, 32bit, 33/66Mhz SATA Controller Card

Pros: none

Cons: Shipped with a CD, a floppy, and also found a driver on Rosewill's site. None of the drivers worked for Windows XP-Pro. May have been a bad card, but i usually get errors when hardware malfunctions. This one just said every version of the driver was incompatible with the hardware. Had to RMA the card.

Do not buy from this vendor

- Motherboard said 4-8 days and took closer to 2 weeks - Motherboard arrived non-functional - The vendor could not be contacted for a refund and lists a bogus phone number - NewEgg could not contact the vendor on my behalf either so no return shipping could be generated - Luckily, NewEgg processed my refund on the vendor's behalf. I doubt they will recover the cost.
