Most Favorable Review

fast and quiet

Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS 300GB 10000 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: look, i know it's been said before, but i'll add another positive review to the count. this thing is very fast, and very quiet. i just finished building a top of the line system with the angle of being ultra-quiet, and this drive along with a samsung spinpoint f1 1tb did the job.

Cons: you pay a little premium. common-sense.

Overall Review: no problems with my drive.

Most Critical Review

won't turn on, but usb devices have power.

ASRock Z97 Extreme3 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard
ASRock Z97 Extreme3 LGA 1150 Intel Z97 HDMI USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Pros: nice when it worked..

Cons: ..started having problems after power cord removed. like everyone else, i was thinking all was well with the build. unplugged, plugged back in, and had to fiddle around forever unplugging and hitting power switch 20 times. turned back on. ran great. shutdown windows. can't get it back on. fooled around with it for another 15 minutes. it ain't coming on. what a hassle to disassemble all these components that were JUST put together.

Overall Review: usb components have power. they light up. but no case or cpu fans turn on... won't even try.

DONT BUY FOR MAC OSX

Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - White
Transcend TS-RDF8K USB 3.0 Support SDHC/SDXC/UDMA6/UDMA7 CF and MSXC, with CF, SD, and Micro Slot Flash Card Reader - White

Pros: price

Cons: won't read cf cards on mac. it corrupted the pictures it tried to copy. good thing it's so slow ( estimated 11 hours for 8 gb's of pics ) otherwise the whole batch would of been wasted. rebooted, tried several different usb3.0 ports on a brand new iMac. plugged in old dynes usb 2.0 card reader and copied them in a few minutes.

wd tv live

D-Link DGS-2208 Unmanaged 8-Port Desktop Green Ethernet Switch
D-Link DGS-2208 Unmanaged 8-Port Desktop Green Ethernet Switch

Pros: works fine for everything but my wd tv live box. gigabit speeds i get sustained 60-80 mB/s throughput copying large multigig files from whs to w7 and reverse.

Cons: this took me 3 months to figure out, but it doesn't work with my wd tv live box any longer for 1080p movies. they stutter after a few minutes. what's weird is it worked for the first 6 months fine. i replaced EVERYTHING, the wd live box, ran new cat5e wire, tried different servers. it doesn't make sense, since i can get 60-80 mB/s sustained on gigabit, but i can't keep a steady 100 megabit stream between it and the wdlive box. i took the gigabit switch out of the loop and used a 2wire uverse 100 mbit router to connect the server & wdlive box and there are no hiccups/stuttering. just weird and a pita.

whs build

ZOTAC IONITX-A-U Atom 330 1.6GHz Dual-Core NVIDIA ION Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo
ZOTAC IONITX-A-U Atom 330 1.6GHz Dual-Core NVIDIA ION Mini ITX Motherboard / CPU Combo

Pros: right price and more than enough cpu for a whs build. i get 65-80mB/s sustained through gigabit from it with a samsung eco drive. never seen cpu hit 100% even when sabnzbd is rebuilding blurays. runs cool with the stock fan (which is decently quiet) sitting on top of the heatsink, idles @ 38° C very nice assortment of hardware for the price..

Cons: no way to screw fan to heatsink. ran with an open chassis and no fan, and temps reached 85° C within 30 minutes. only two sata ports are ahci. i guess the third one was meant for an optical. there is no way to expand with more drives internally. i had originally hoped to expand up to 5 or 6 drives, but it's not going to happen with this board. the mini pci-e slot that is advertised is taken, and they don't sell mini pci-e sata controllers anyways. this is my biggest dissapointment and the reason why i'll probably end up using this mobo for a htpc and buy the zotac G-E model for my server instead.

OKGEAR FC44-18BKS 1.5 ft. 4pin Extension Cable W/ Black Sleeved
OKGEAR FC44-18BKS 1.5 ft. 4pin Extension Cable W/ Black Sleeved

Pros: just a power cord.. ..exactly what i needed though for a mini itx mobo in a full size case. the power cords that came with the itx sized mobo would not reach the drive bays.

Cons: ..

Overall Review: my zotac ion itx board came with a molex to (3) sata power adapter. but there was no way it was going to reach without this.
