It really works

D-Link DIR-505 SharePort Mobile Companion, Router/Access Point, Wi-Fi Hot Spot, ShareMedia via USB
D-Link DIR-505 SharePort Mobile Companion, Router/Access Point, Wi-Fi Hot Spot, ShareMedia via USB

Pros: It's easy to set up. I set the switch to a wifi hotspot and plugged it in. I used the D-Link app on my iPad. No muss. No fuss. It works. My plan is to plug into the A/C plug in the car so the kids can connect their iPods via WiFi and play their head-to-head games. Also tried a couple wifi walkie talkie apps. Great. I intend to hook my 64GB Patriot USB stick to see if I can serve moves off it. I'm so pleased. Bear in mind I didn't hook it to my internet network because that is not my reason for buying. However, I'm quite sure it would be a breeze. I don't know how they could make this thing any smaller without using a different style of ethernet and usb port. On second thought, I think I'll plug it in outside while we play in the yard so I can have internet out there whenever we aren't using it in the car. I love this little gadget.

Cons: The only think I don't like is the little "one touch" configuration button is exactly where you would put your finger when you unplug. I wish it was near the bottom of the unit. Bad design choice but the gadget is so handy I can overlook that little mistake.

Most Critical Review

This one was effectively DOA

ARRIS SB5101U SURFboard Cable Modem USB and Ethernet 10/100Base-T DOCSIS 2.0
ARRIS SB5101U SURFboard Cable Modem USB and Ethernet 10/100Base-T DOCSIS 2.0

Pros: It has pretty green lights...all except for the light I most needed - cable sync.

Cons: It got power but the cable modem portion was DOA. Comcast HSI tech support couldn't make it sync so after trying everything --- everything --- we unplugged this modem and went back to the old Linksys WCG200. I will be returning this for a new one. I can't possibly get two units DOA right? ...... right?

Overall Review: Stuff happens. Can't get in too big a wad over it even though it blew my dad's surprise Christmas bonus present from me.

Western Digital Black WD2001FASS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: So far so good. Nice and fast. used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my old 500GB drive to this one. Maintained all registrations and even Windows XP inside Parallels on OS X. Even the Adobe stuff was intact.

Cons: Nothing wrong ...... yet.

Great product but needs longer cables

PANAMAX M8DBS-EX Premium Power Conditioner
PANAMAX M8DBS-EX Premium Power Conditioner

Pros: I bought this unit after a recommendation from a satellite TV forum. They say these folks make a good surge protector. I love the layout of this unit. I would have preferred a black unit but this one still looks nice. There are plenty of outlets. Not much to it until we have a lightning hit or a power surge. So far so good, though.

Cons: The only thing I'd complain about is the very short coaxial cable they send. It's too short to be of use to anyone with a wall-mounted television. They send a phone line and it's long enough. While it's no big deal, I'd rather not have to go and buy another coax cable. C'est la vie.

Overall Review: I will probably buy some more of these for other parts of the house. Their reputation precedes them. This is the first surge protector I'm not worried about leaving plugged in during our typical violent weather.

It works with MythTV Fedora Core 6

EVGA GeForce 6200LE 256MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card 256-A8-N295-LX
EVGA GeForce 6200LE 256MB GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card 256-A8-N295-LX

Pros: 1.Variety of video output options. I use S-Video out to a large screen Sony CRT Rear Projection TV. 2. Works with MythTV 0.20 under Fedora Core 6

Cons: 1. I never could get KnoppMyth to work with it. 2. NVIDIA compatibility with Linux straight out of the box is decent until you want to do something special. Then you must track down drivers. I used the ones from livna.org.

Overall Review: I'm running this on an A-Open AK73 Pro(A) motherboard with a 900MHz AMD Athlon. I'm not a gamer so I don't care about 3D this or that. I'll ultimately be using this to capture and push HDTV on a faster system. Follow Jerod's instructions for installing MythTV, then go to rpm.livna.org and pull down their NVIDIA drivers.
