Refurb?

Viore 7" Portable LCD TV
Viore 7" Portable LCD TV

Pros: A very full-featured unit that works fairly well. Would have given it 5 eggs if it came to me as a new unit, but see below.

Cons: I got a unit that is clearly used. The UPC on the shop-worn box was torn off and the box was clearly taped up with ordinary clear tape. The box had a sticker on that identified the contents as "Portable LCD TV Viore PLC7V95 R" - the R would normally indicate refurbished or re-certified. The unit itself was in a sealed shrink-wrap bag so it had been process by someone, but the severe scuffs on the screen and scratches all over the unit belied that is was not new. There was no clear plastic protector on the screen. The clincher was that the unit had been scanned in LA and all the LA stations were still in memory. I doubt they get LA stations in China! There was NO MENTION of this item being anything other than NEW when I ordered it.

Overall Review: Debating whether to return as mis-labeled, since it is a pretty good buy, even for a refurb. However, other vendors have similar 7" LCD TVs for $70 that are, in fact, new. We bought a bunch of those for use in an office environment and they worked well, too.

PLA-470 NOT HomePlugAV Compatible

ZyXEL PLA470-SP Powerline HomePlug AV Adapter with Built-In 4-Port 10/100M Switch Up to 200Mbps
ZyXEL PLA470-SP Powerline HomePlug AV Adapter with Built-In 4-Port 10/100M Switch Up to 200Mbps

Pros: None so far.

Cons: I bought 3 ZyXel PLA units; 1 wireless router, 1 single port Ethernet adapter, and this 4-port Ethernet adapter. The router and single-port adapter connect fine, but not the 4-port unit. Checked firmware and the working units had v3.0.5, but the 4-port had v1-4-1454. No problem, I thought, I'll just flash the latest firmware, which was conveniently posted on the ZyXel website. Couldn't do it! Attempted flash resulted in "it is not support for the firmware version of this device." The grammar really inspired confidence. Tried several times with same result. Unit is therefore useless. Contacted email support and got a quick response, which wasn't completely satisfactory. They stated unit must be returned for re-flash to latest v3.0.5 firmware. An advance ship replacement unit was offered if I give them a credit card. No word on whether such advance replacement would be new or re-furb. I bought new, so I want a new unit. I guess it might be better to let them flash my unit.

Overall Review: I hope they don't scratch up my new unit while re-flashing. Still not sure why they can't simply provide a flash tool that works. Their RMA assumes I will pay to return the unit, though they do claim to return prepaid. I really think they should ship out the advance unit without a CC, since it was their error, acknowledged on several manufacturer posts to this review page. I did plug in all 3 units and let them cook (literally) overnight; they get VERY hot. I don't hold out much hope for long term reliablity. I have 2 SlingLink units that stay fairly cool to the touch and have worked for 4 years. This is my first experience with ZyXel, which so far is very disappointing. I will bump up my star rating if I wind up with a functioning, as-new unit. Or, I may just return the whole bunch to Newegg and let them deal with it. "Ships with latest firmware" is NOT TRUE!

Batting 2 for 2

ZyXEL NBG318SKIT-400-SP 3-in-1 Wireless Router with 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Adapter IEEE 802.11g
ZyXEL NBG318SKIT-400-SP 3-in-1 Wireless Router with 200 Mbps Powerline HomePlug AV Adapter IEEE 802.11g

Pros: Good specs. Works for about 5 minutes.

Cons: Only works for 5 minutes, then spontaneously reboots. I bought this router plus PLA-400 package, along with a PLA-470 4-port adapter. The PLA-470 had old firmware, which could not be updated, so it wouldn't work with this router and adapter (see my review of the PLA-470). The PLA-470 is going back to ZyXel, where they will hopefully be able to flash the newer firmware. No worries, I thought, I can still use the router and PLA-400, which managed to connect via power line. However, after installing everything, I find that the router won't run a wireless connection for more than 5 minutes without rebooting. Tried re-flashing the firmware, which was already the latest offered with no improvement. So I now have a router that is next to useless, hence my 2-for-2 review title.

Overall Review: Went back to my WRT-54GL running Tomato and all is well again. I can't understand how manufacturers can sell a product that doesn't work out of the box. I will be contacting ZyXel to see what can be done to get a router that works.

Great Value AIO

Brother MFC series MFC-790CW Up to 33 ppm Black Print Speed 6000 x 1200 dpi Color Print Quality Ethernet (RJ-45) / USB / Wi-Fi InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer
Brother MFC series MFC-790CW Up to 33 ppm Black Print Speed 6000 x 1200 dpi Color Print Quality Ethernet (RJ-45) / USB / Wi-Fi InkJet MFC / All-In-One Color Printer

Pros: The MFC-790CW is a very fully-featured AIO and a great value for list price; if you get it on sale, it's even better! I've had great luck with Brother products; they are reliable and consumables (ink/toner) are reasonably priced. Lack of "chipped" ink cartridges means you can get low-cost compatibles for this printer. I found wireless set-up to be easy, even with WPA security. Printing, scanning, and copy functions work perfectly; haven't tried Fax yet. ADF works well. Unit is fairly speedy and quiet. I like the sleep function, since I leave the unit on to receive Fax calls 24/7. Good looking design; I especially like that input and output paper trays are contained within the unit, rather than hanging out like some competitors.

Cons: Unlike MFC-795CW, this unit did not come with Win7 drivers, but these were an easy download from the Brother website. Just note that the CD supplied with the MFC-790CW won't install on a Win7 machine. If the download is too much trouble, the unit works fine with the default drivers included on the MS Win7 install disk.

Overall Review: I shopped the competition from Epson, HP, Canon, Lexmark, and Kodak and found the Brother best met my needs at a price I was willing to pay.
