Good product at a peachy price

Mediasonic HomeWorX ATSC Digital Converter Box with TV Recording, Media Player, and TV Tuner Function (HW-150PVR)
Mediasonic HomeWorX ATSC Digital Converter Box with TV Recording, Media Player, and TV Tuner Function (HW-150PVR)

Pros: Easy to set-up; compact; normal AC cord--no wall wart; nice selection of A/V outputs. Recording option with USB drive is a plus. HDMI jack will output up to 1080p/60 Hz! Calling this device a "Converter Box" is somewhat misleading as it is a fully functional HDTV receiver: it outputs HD (via HDMI and component) and SD and downconverts HD for SD output on the composite jacks.

Cons: Inconsistent reception quality: sometimes locks to stored channel when tuning, other times not. Very sensitive to signal level variations--has unusual reaction to combination of input level (in dBm) and tuner/demodulator signal-to-noise ratio: will lock to high S/N and low input combo AND to low S/N and high input level combo, but in between is sketchy. Have tested it side-by-side with 2 integrated TVs (internal tuner/demodulator) and 2 ATSC set top receivers, and one USB stick receiver using the same antenna (outdoor 30-ft mast mounted with pre-amp). They all have different combination tuner/demodulator chipsets. All 5 will lock to certain stations with ease, but the HW150 has trouble with the same ones. I also have tested (2) HW180 boxes and encountered the same issues, but see "Other thoughts" section for specifics. Basically, if you have a strong input signal (greater than about -62 dBm) AND a good S/N ratio output from the tuner/demodulator (about 21-22 dB or greater), the unit will receive the channel (and hold it) perfectly. However, for this price point, a really good performer. The remote is a bit awkward to use at first: the buttons are arranged in an inconvenient layout but, like anything else, you get used to it. But, then again, the price point!

Overall Review: Chipsets: M-star MSD 7618 VLSI 128-pin CPU chip; Samsung 6-th Generation S5H1411 demodulator chip, and Rafael 820T silicon tuner. The HW180 model has the same M-star CPU and Rafael silicon tuner, but uses an M-star MSB1237 demodulator chip in place of the Samsung. Samsung discontinued the S5H1411, so I presume the newer HW180 had to go with a different chip (M-star).

Great tablet for early teenagers; Acer has a winner here!

Acer ICONIA W1-810-14ZE 32 GB Net-tablet PC - 8" - In-plane Switching (IPS) Technology - Wireless LAN - Intel Atom Z3735G Quad-core (4 Core) 1.33 GHz - White

Pros: Windows 10 Home. Nearly equivalent to having a desktop PC version. IPS display for wide viewing angle so a group can watch on-screen content off-axis together. Very responsive despite 1.33 GHz processor. Inexpensive in case the kids aren't of a careful nature! 8 hour battery life. Great that you can add up to 32 GB MicroSD card for more memory. Microsoft Office software included (Word, Excel, etc.)

Cons: Would have been better to have loudspeaker on front of phone instead of rear-firing. Can use the Bluetooth function to send audio to outboard bluetooth speaker. Touchscreen sometimes resists actuation; a bit of finesse is required until you get the hang of it. Wish the built in drive had more capacity than 32 GB (but cost would be higher). If it upgrades to newer Windows 10 version, be sure to delete "windows, old" folder under System Cleanup function after install to make more space on main drive available. Sending data to wireless printer could be tricky since there is no reliable wireless print app for Windows 10; if printer is Bluetooth capable, that may be an option.

Overall Review: I would highly recommend this tablet for youngsters who could use a portable pocket PC for school or recreational use (watching videos, etc.). If they break it, it won't cost the parents an arm and a leg!
