2 out of 5 eggs It works fine, but doesn't have pull tabs. 09/19/2014

This review is from: Link Depot UV-FLP10-SL 10" Floppy UV Cable

Pros: This cable is functional and attractive. It works. The construction looks and feels solid. I have confidence that it will hold up well with time.

Cons: The unit I received doesn't match the picture or description of the product in one key respect. Per the description: "Pull tag, for easier removal from the device." This cable lacks pull tabs.

Especially considering the fact that the individual wires in this cable are essentially exposed toward the end connectors, and that the plastic housing that covers the exposed lengths of wire on each end slides freely along the main cable away from the end connectors when pulled (per previous reviews), it is really important to have some method of detaching these cables from their sockets without pulling directly on the cable itself.

I was really surprised to see that the pull tabs were absent.

Other Thoughts: I struggled with the score for this rating. One the one hand, the unit does seem well-constructed. It also works just fine. On the other hand, such a key feature (and one that's cheap and easy to implement, and that is present on pretty much every IDC cable from the past 30 years, no matter how cheap) should really be included, especially if the product is presented as having that feature.

In all honesty, I'd have to say caveat emptor on this one. Who knows whether any of these cables do have pull tabs? If you're in the market for a floppy disk drive cable, it may be safer to look at another product unless the lack of pull tabs is of no concern to you.

BYTECC Black 1.44MB Internal Floppy Drive Model BT-145

5 out of 5 eggs A Functional Floppy Disk Drive 09/19/2014

This review is from: BYTECC Black 1.44MB Internal Floppy Drive Model BT-145

Pros: This is a functional floppy disk drive with a conventional 34-pin data/control interface and a conventional 4-pin power input interface.

The legacy (ISA/LPC/Super I/O) floppy disk controller protocol has been thoroughly well-established for a very long time now. In fact, the technology is obsolescent. So, in my view, in order to get 5 stars, all the thing needs to do is work as described. This unit does work as described.

The dimensions of the drive are stable: it fit smoothly into the floppy drive slot in my case, all pin connectors fit smoothly ,and the mounting screw hole locations are where they should be. The bezels are easy to snap on and off, and fit snugly. The operation of the disk-grabbing mechanism and eject button is smooth and solid.

The drive successfully reads, writes and formats disks with no problem. The write-protect functionality works as designed. The indicator LED lights up appropriately when the drive is busy.

All in all, a functional floppy disk drive unit.

Cons: Slight residue and light dust on some internal surfaces of the unit.

Other Thoughts: Based on previous reviews, and considering the obsolescent nature of the technology, I had some concern that I might get a used or re-branded drive, but this appears to be a new or like-new unit. As described, it comes with three different bezels and matching eject buttons (black, neutral, silver). It also comes with four mounting screws.

As far as I can tell, this is the only current-manufacture floppy disk drive left on the market. The classic industry-standard Sony MPF-920 hasn't been manufactured for some time, and prices for new models of that drive are getting into vintage territory.

I'm grateful that Bytecc is carrying the torch for this legacy product. It's a relief and pleasure to see that they've created a successful, function version of the product.

GIGABYTE GV-N630-2GI REV3.0 GeForce GT 630 2GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card

5 out of 5 eggs Great for Improving an Aging System 03/28/2014

This review is from: GIGABYTE GV-N630-2GI REV3.0 GeForce GT 630 2GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card

Pros: This is just a really good basic card with 2GB DDR3 memory and a 128-bit internal memory bus interface.

Given that my old card was giving my old Dell Inspiron 530 a Windows Experience score or whatever of 4.0, and now the 3D work score is 5.6/5.9, my video card is no longer throttling my whole system.

This card takes advantage of rendering technologies in Maya 2009 that my old card didn't recognize, and basically runs all my work without any kind of hassle.

Although I'm running this thing doing pretty extensive 3D animation and compositing on an old entry-level Dell with a PCIe 1.x interface, it is working well. When I upgrade to a modern workstation, I plan to buy a hardcore workstation graphics card, but this will still serve as something to get me up-and-running if need be.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I bought this because the Radeon HD3450 that game in the Dell Inspiron 530 I bought in 2009 was choking the life out of my system.

Octupling the video memory and adding a huge increase in processing power has made an enormous difference.

When running renders in Maya 2009, this card chews through scenes that the Radeon just sat and choked on. Of course the card is unsuitable for any kind of visual work, basically redlining at idle even on the simplest scene.

Still, for 10% of what I might spend on a super-duper gaming card or a low-mid-range workstation card, I've turned my computer back into a usable system.

This is by no means a high-end card, but it's a really good value. It's basically the cheapest reliable / reputable card with its specs out there. If, like me, you're on a really tight budget but you want reliable performance, check it out.
