Seagate ST1000LM014 1TB 5400 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop SSHD Bare Drive
Seagate ST1000LM014 1TB 5400 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Laptop SSHD Bare Drive

Pros: - Drastically Improved boot times over HDD - Improved load times of frequently used programs - Runs cool - Quiet - Huge amount of storage capacity - 3 year warranty - Solid Read and Write speeds for a 5400 RPM drive - Large cache - Well packaged - Vastly improved reliability over first gen hybrid drives

Cons: - Slower file transfer speeds than a good 7200rpm drive. When testing I saw avg Read times of 101.2MB/s and avg Write times of 99.9 MB/s. Not bad at all but not great - Very slow access times for non cached Reads (17.6ns) and Writes (21.3ns)

Overall Review: Overall I was very pleased with seagates new creation. Windows was very snappy when installed on this hybrid drive. Boot times were improved by a good margin but it still doesn't compare to a solid state drive. I really wish the drive was a 7200rpm hybrid. I'm sure this would have increased costs but then there really wouldn't have been any downside to this Hybrid HDD. The 5400 RPM really killed access times. Access times are what tend to make the computer feel snappy. The cached info works great but infrequently used programs may load a big sluggishly. The drive works great for firing up my laptop on short notice and I find myself using it much more frequently for note taking because of this. Personally I prefer the speed of a solid state drive still, but this is a great alternative for someone who needs to have a large amount of data with them. All of the issues of the original 500GB hybrid drives seem to have been resolved. I have not experienced any stuttering or file corruption even after heavy usage. It's nice to see the drive backed by a one year warranty when many drives have been reduced to 1yr. This Seagate drive would be great for someone who needs a large amount of storage in their laptop or a media center. I would have no problem installing this drive in a future build. I think Seagate has a great product on their hands and with a few improvements could have a real game changer.

Good mid-range mobo.

MSI FM2-A85XMA-E35 FM2 Trinity AMD A85X (Hudson D4) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
MSI FM2-A85XMA-E35 FM2 Trinity AMD A85X (Hudson D4) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: -6 sata ports that support a multitude of RAID options -All Solid capacitor construction -PCI slot for users with legacy devices from old builds (wireless / sound cards) -Front panel USB 3.0 Jack -On board HDMI, VGA, and DVI -Huge amount of USB Ports -Includes 1 PS2 port that can work for keyboard or mouse. -Gigabit Ethernet -Worked with DDR3 2400 with just a bios setting change -Surprisingly good gaming performance when bundled with a 5800k

Cons: -The auto overclocking utilities produced very poor overclocks. -Most of the bundled software is garbage. -UEIF BIOS is a bit clunky -Not very flexible when it comes to manual overclocking -Sparse accessory package

Overall Review: This MSI mobo is a decent mid-range FM2 mobo. With the SATA, USB ports, and display output options it is ideal for a media center computer or file server. I love that all of the SATA ports are on the same controller. On most Intel systems you get 4 on one controller and 2 on another. Install was simple. I thought the bios was a bit clunky and had some minor issues changing the boot order and setting the time. It was nice to see a USB 3.0 header included since more and more cases are now coming with 3.0 front panel ports. The PCI Slot was a nice find. I was able to reuse my wireless card without any issues. File transfer speeds were pretty impressive with the gigabit Ethernet. (again a nice feature for media pcs or file servers.) Worked just fine with my DDR3 2400 once manualy set in teh bios. (APU graphics get a decent boost in speed with faster RAM.) The gaming performance of this mobo with a 5800k right out of the box really surprised me. It can play Defiance and rift on decent settings @ 1680x1050 all day long. This is a great setup from some one looking to get into entry lvl gaming for cheap. The option to crossfire with an on board GPU down the road is also a nice bonus. Overclocking performance was lacking. The auto overclocking was a joke. I would have liked to see a utility like asus easy-tune that actually tests different setting incrementally to find your max overclock. This mobo just applies a lower overclock that is generally safe without ever actually seeing how far your CPU can go. Manual overclocking allowed for much better results but wasn't without its flaws. You don't get full control over voltage which makes dialing your max overclock with the lowest stable possible voltage impossible. On a Board so obviously geared towards file servers and media PCs I would like to have seen more under clocking options for when power usage / noise can be a large concern. The accessory package was pretty much the bare minimum. 2 SATA 6.0 Cables and a back plate. This is very common of inexpensive mobos but it still would be nice to toss in a few extra SATA cables or something to stand out from the crowd. All in All I'm pleased with this board. The poor overclocking results were a bit of an let down but I didn't expect much from a board in this price range. I wouldn't hesitate to use this motherboard for an office, media center, file server, or even entry lvl gaming machine.

Time Saver

TP-Link AV600 Powerline Ethernet Adapter(TL-PA4010 KIT)- Plug&Play, Power Saving, Nano Powerline Adapter, Expand Home Network with Stable Connections
TP-Link AV600 Powerline Ethernet Adapter(TL-PA4010 KIT)- Plug&Play, Power Saving, Nano Powerline Adapter, Expand Home Network with Stable Connections

Pros: This TP-LINK power line kit is a great little bundle that could save you a lot of work / money. First off I was impressed by the packing and accessories included. There is no way this item is getting damaged in shipping. TP-LINK includes 2 decent quality cat 5 cables so you have everything you need to get started. Physically the power line adapter is smaller than I expected. It comes in around 2.5" x 2" X 1" (if you don't include the length of the plug before it's in the wall.) The adapters are very sleek looking and IMHO wouldn't take away at all from a room if you are unable to hide them. I haven't used any powerline adapters recently and I can say they have come a long ways. The connection stayed solid during testing and normal usage. I was also able to use them on different circuits in the house which I was unable to do with older models. Powerline adapters are a great alternative to bothersome and often expensive wireless solutions when you can't run cables. This kit itself is 1/2 the price of an xbox 360 wireless adapter as just one example. I couldn't believe how easy this was to setup. I literally just plugged the 2 devices in, let them set for a few seconds, then plugged them into my network. Everything worked perfectly. If you would like to secure the network all you have to do is press the small sync button on the adapters. Running the devices secured did not produce any loss of network speed. The speed was very good for a powerline adapter. I saw max speeds of ~80Mb/s during testing. These speeds are a good bit off of the 500Mb/s on the box. I will talk about this more in the cons section. I was surprised by the power saving feature. If the device plugged into the adapter has be off for 5 minutes the adapters will turn themselves off. They will power back up on their own too as soon as they detect activity. Not any breakthrough technology here but a nice idea that could save you a few $.

Cons: There really isn't much to dislike about this kit. The unit is advertised as 500Mb/s but that speed is between the units, not the actual link to your devises. The actual network ports are only 10/100. This is still kind of nice because you can have multiple powerline adapters running at full speed over your network without being bottle necked by a 100 Mb/s backbone, but a little dishonest in my opinion. The other thing that could be a problem to some is that the status LEDs are extremely bright for such small LEDs. If I were going to use these in the bedroom I would definitely end up covering them in tape. It would be nice if there was a cover for them or some sort of brightness adjustment.

Overall Review: I've had some really good luck with TP-LINK products lately and this Kit does not fail to impress. There is virtually no setup to the device and I'm confident virtually any one can set them up on their own. I would not hesitate to purchases this product, I would like to see TP-LINK step up their warranty from 1 year on their networking products. If nothing else just to inspire more confidence in their products. 1 year warranties are normally associated with cheap products and I would like to see TP-LINK break that image.

Cutting Edge Bridge

WD My Net 4-Port Gigabit Wireless AC Bridge WDBMRD0000NBL-HESN
WD My Net 4-Port Gigabit Wireless AC Bridge WDBMRD0000NBL-HESN

Pros: Pros If you are looking for a simple to use bleeding edge wireless bridge look no further. I used this router to provide internet access to all of the devices in my entertainment center including an Xbox 360, Blu-Ray Player, Media Center PC and ATT Uverse Box. Never saw any stuttering or performance issues even under heavy load. With my media pc running both mumble and minecraft servers, The Uverse box recording and my media center streaming a movie I didn't see any noticeable slow down. Just be sure your router supports 5ghz before you purchase or else it wont even see your network. Setup was painless. If you have a modern router with a WNS button it only takes a few button presses to get this up and running. When transferring large files I was seeing transfer speeds of about 80MB/s which is great for wireless This bridge also includes one nice quality cat6 cable. I’m sure most of us have plenty but it’s still nice to see.

Cons: This device only works with 5ghz routers. It would be nice if WD had a hard to miss warning on the box. Unfortunately I can see a lot of users getting confused by this, thinking the unit is defective. The ac adapter takes up 2 slots. It's a pet peeve of mine since good power conditioners are expensive and every port counts.

Overall Review: This is my first experience with a WD network device that's not a NAS. I am very impressed with the unit and its ease of setup. WD's networking products are definitely on the right track and with a few small tweaks could be top tier.

Plenty of Info on this drive

SAMSUNG G3 Station 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HX-DU020EC
SAMSUNG G3 Station 2TB USB 2.0 3.5" External Hard Drive HX-DU020EC

Pros: There is plenty of information on this drive. USB 2.0 interface. Things like the internal hard drives cache and throughput rates don't really matter in the case of USB 2.0 which maxes out ~40MB/s. Any hard drive made in the last 5+ years is well above 40MB/s

Cons: Only USB 2.0. Many of the newer drives offer an esata connection which will actually allow you to run the drive un-bottlenecked by USB 2.0s slow connection. But for the price it's a good deal and the only time esata would make a huge difference is if you transfer over a large amount of preexisting data off of other drives. Most users will not notice when transferring over single files.

Good 4890

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 CrossFireX Support Video Card - OC edition 100269OCSR

Pros: pre overclocked to 900mhz. Was able to overclock mine a bit farther to 1000mhz 2 year warranty

Cons: is a bit pricey compared to some other 4890s but got it on sale from the egg for a great price.
