Pros: The RT-N66U is my favorite router, I own 3 of them. Newegg shipped it out the same day. The router arrived in a sealed static bag, all parts were included. It looks brand new. Power cord was coiled up.
Asus firmware was just updated again 3/21/13 More features and 3g/4g support. Merlin, Shibby, and Victek have been tweaking the firmware making these routers very robust.
Cons: I rolled the dice again on a refurbished RT-N66U. Unfortunately The unit has a heat related problem. After 15 to 30 minutes powered on The LAN/WAN ports die. The port LED's go out, and all ethernet connections quit. Turn it off and let it cool, then everything works fine for about another 15 minutes, then quits again.
I guess I didn't learn my lesson. It's $11 to ship it back RMA, and it will be at least a week before the replacement shows up. I should have just bought a new one.
The prior owners config was still in it, just like the last one. Not quite refurbished.
Other Thoughts: To gain access to the router that has prior owners settings and password. Hold down the WPS button while powering up. This will put it back to default settings.
I don't think These units are refurbished Since they come with prior owners config. They probably don't do more than power them up to see if the pretty blue lights come on. The LAN/WAN problem took 15 minutes to show up, so I don't hold
Pros: In my previous review they shorted me an antenna. After about 5 days waiting for online support to do something, I finally called newegg on the phone, took a while but it was worth the 10 minute wait on hold.
The rep wanted to RMA, but agreed to send a similar dualband antenna instead. The antenna showed up in an express envelop in two days. Happy camper!!!
With latest firmwares 4G Modems are supported 01/13/13 (Tested on Asus and Merlin. Shibby just updated to Ntfs-3g release 2013.1.13, but I haven't tested it yet) For failback or 4G internet this rocks. I tested Verizon usb551L LTE. Worked great, 5 to 20 Mbps up and down.
Simultaneous dual band is great, external antennas, and placing the Router up high in a window, away from electronics noise and metal makes the biggest improvement in coverage.
Other Thoughts: I love these Routers. I run firmware from Merlin and Shibby.READ FULL REVIEW
Pros: Received quick, NewEgg is good about getting stuff out the door and on the truck. Had a missing antenna, and contacted live chat to get a antenna. The person on live chat was cordial, quick, and stated that she would inquire if an antenna was available, and would email me back soon with an update.
The RT-N66U is an awesome router, I own several. Put some Tomato in it, and gain many more features. The stock firmware is pretty cool too. For those that just want to plug it in and get it going. The web setup will guide you through the settings. Click, click, click all done. Speed tests improved over E3000's with RT-N66U's powerful CPU. High power simultaneous 2.4 and 5GHz. Better speed's farther away from router. The electronics checkout OK, had latest firmware was already installed,
Cons: Problem: Missing one antenna, lose an egg.
Not really refurbished, lose another egg.
The Router was received stuffed into a small box, bulging with only two antennas, power supply was tangled spaghetti crammed on top. The Router was in a sealed bag, but had the prior customer's Settings which were password protected. Had to go through several 30/30/30 resets to attempt access to the router. Finally found that holding reset button for about 10 second, while powering up, cleared the prior owner's settings out back to default. My router has two distinct dents in the case where it has been dropped at least twice. Not quite Refurbished. I am a techy guy, and don't care about the dents. I just want the missing antenna, and functional AP/router.
but won't power it up without all three antennas.
three days after contacting online support, and haven't gotten any update about the missing antenna, maybe it's in the mail. RT-N66U is back in the box, waiting for the antenna after three days I ponder if it was a good move to buy used.
Other Thoughts: I buy a lot from newegg, they are my favorite online computer store. I am confident they will make it right.
I do wonder how it slipped through "being refurbished" when it still had the prior owner's settings locking me out, missing parts, and they didn't even untangle the power cord. This is an anomaly, and it won't keep me from buying refurbished items down the road.
