AMD Mobile Athlon 64 3000+ (DTR) ClawHammer 1.8 GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 754 Single-Core AMA3000BEX5AR Processor
AMD Mobile Athlon 64 3000+ (DTR) ClawHammer 1.8 GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 754 Single-Core AMA3000BEX5AR Processor

Pros: Cheap. 1 meg cache. No heat spreader, so be careful with it.

Cons: Multiplier is locked above 9x, free below 9x. Not like the mobile bartons of yore which were completly unlocked. Silly me for not doing more research, but this cpu is still the best value for the $. If you want to OC this you should get ddr 500 memory or better, since the only way to OC seems to be to raise the FSB.

Overall Review: Happy in an dfi lanparty ultra 250gb, after minor mod of the heatsink retention device to make sure the heatsink is touching the processor and not hung up on the little plastic nubs in the yellow socket.

OK

APEX PC-115 Beige Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 350W Power Supply
APEX PC-115 Beige Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 350W Power Supply

Pros: Inexpensive. The power supply seems fine. The top panel comes off completly with just some screws so it is easy to mod for a blowhole, a big plus.

Cons: Very thin metal. Flexible. Don't sit on it. If it's just sitting in one place it will be fine, but for a computer that's moved often to lan parties something sturdier might be better..

Great!

Apollo Apollo 6800 128-RD GeForce 6800 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card
Apollo Apollo 6800 128-RD GeForce 6800 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card

Pros: Unlocked to 16 pipes no problems. Fast! Great cooling solution. stock memory speed came as advertised.

Cons: With only 128 meg memory I have to keep quality on low to play Q4 at high framerates.

Overall Review: Older games, particularly quake arena, are stunningly gorgeous with all the quality turned up to maximum.. like a completly different game.

Ohhh yesss...

DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb ATX AMD Motherboard
DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb 754 NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: More bios options than the flight deck of a huey 212. Has every accesory port known to man. Happy with my mobile clawhammer and a stick of corasair 1 gb ddr 500.

Cons: before updating to the latest bios, I was able to use the nvidia ide drivers succesfully. After update to latest bios, nvidia ide drivers make the system unresponsive immediately. Not a big deal, I just leave the nvida ide driver out, and the problem might be solvable by some other means..

Overall Review: If you use an aftermarket heatsink retention system, watch out for the tiny surface mount device (about the size of a flea) on the back side of the MB in the area where your back heatsink clamp is going to contact. If you crush this device your MB is not going to be happy. I noticed this device just in time. I just used the yellow plastic heatsink retention parts that came with the MB, the rear part has pockets which line up and clear this device. I also used a sharp wood chisel to remove the 4 small cylindrical bumps inside the upper heatsink retention socket to make sure the heatsink was touching the CPU (mobile clawhammer with no heat spreader)

Great for a stand-alone jukebox

CHAINTECH AV-710 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card
CHAINTECH AV-710 7.1 Channels 24-bit 192KHz PCI Interface Sound Card

Comments: Got this to make a stand-alone jukbox with iTunes. Works great for 62 days of use so far. No hiss, I am feeding my reciever from the line-out jack. I expected worse sound, and figured I would eventually have to get a reciever with optical-in, but there is nothing to complain about with this card for my use. Finally, I can put all those CDs in a box in the basement, instead of having them stacked up around the stereo. Wheee! And compare the price of this and a PC you already have to an iPod...Heh.
