Most Critical Review

Cheap, but you get what you pay for

Rosewill RC-NIC413 4 Port Gigabit Card, Quad RJ45 Ethernet Ports PICe Network Adapter Card
Rosewill RC-NIC413 4 Port Gigabit Card, Quad RJ45 Ethernet Ports PICe Network Adapter Card

Pros: 4 ports Works great other than CON

Cons: -Falls over/Crashes any time steady traffic goes above 420~430 mbps (single port or total across all ports) for more than 10~20 seconds. Takes about 3~4 minutes for a pfsense box to fix issue. Rebooting is faster.

Overall Review: Used for a home built router/firewall. The speed limitations were a pain to chase down and really a big issue if you're doing things like running a home media server to more than one box at 4k quality while trying to download/upload larger items to your storage or to/from the web. Will stick to Intel NICs in the future

Not worth the time

StarTech SATDOCK4U3E 4 Bay eSATA USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5/3.5 HDD
StarTech SATDOCK4U3E 4 Bay eSATA USB 3.0 to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5/3.5 HDD

Pros: Can dock four hard drives of 2.5" & 3.5" in size and offers USB 3.0 making for amazing speed when it works.

Cons: Where to start... I have had to RMA this product twice, the second time I put in for a refund instead of a replacement as this item is too expensive to be shipping back and forth. As stated in several other reviews, horrible firmware as when you dock an additional hard drive it resets connections to all hard drives and the same thing happens when you remove or power off any hard drive which leads to corrupted data on the other drives if you're transferring any files (The manual says they only have to re-connect, which is false as the drives do stop spinning and restart spinning with an audible click). That is also a huge minus if you're actually using the hot swap feature as that means more drive stops and restarts shortening the life of your drive or should I say even just powering off a drive you're not using as they get hot. One last thing in the horrible firmware department has been mentioned in another review is the loop. Sometimes when you add a drive or power off a drive they all go into a restarting/disconnecting loop sometimes only solved by powering all drives off and then on again. Not sure if the last one is firmware or just another faulty station, but it did it with both stations. My biggest problem was with the first one I got, any file transfer that took more than 15~20 seconds would cause all the hard drives to reset and the file transfer to fail. The problem with the second one was the same, except for some reason it would randomly happen somewhere between the 20~30 minute mark of the transfer. Definitely not good if you're trying to back up a hard drive. Lastly, the fans in the bay are junk as they do next to nothing to keep the hard drives cool as in both cases I would turn the fans all the way up but there is no air flow over the hard drives themselves and they get warm pretty quickly.

Overall Review: Looking at other reviews and from my experience, this station is not worth the money at all. Between often being returned to questionable firmware I would rather get a USB hub and connect several single docks to it. A lot less hassle than this product as well as cheaper.
