Very nicely build machine
Pros: Fast. very well assembled. Fast. Very easy to get to most important components. Fast. Looks much better in person. Fast. Decent sound, for a laptop. Did I mention this thing was fast?
Cons: There is a moderate amount of flex if mishandled. Includes both chassis and monitor. touch bar also has a lot of downward flex, not enough support. Keyboard does have flex, not HORRIBLE. . I've seen worse. Comes standard with Raid0, which is a con if you're intending to install an SSD and don't realize you have to hit ctrl-I at boot beforehand and un-raid the drives [which causes all sorts of fun issues with drive recognition until you finally figure this out: live and learn I guess :) Touchpad is a Sentelic, not synaptics. If you're buying this to game at all, you'll have your own mouse. if you're not, better think about getting one anyway. it's not "horrible", but even during this review it randomly jumps the cursor 1 or 2 lines up so that I'm typing into my last sentence.
Overall Review: Overall very well built. Construction is very sold in terms of pieces fitting together. Fit and finish is perfect. picking it up one handed, or closing the lid from only one side will produce a moderate amount of flex, but that's to be expected, with this much plastic. Insanely easy to repaste CPU/GPU if you're into DIY. Replaced a G73-JH with this as I needed something SLIGHTLY more portable to make it through airport security. Added OCZ vertex III [firmware 2.15] and aside from the raid. . fiasco, have had no problems with it. Turbo button provides a very noticable gain. Max fan button MEANS Max fan. Max fan is loud. in other news, water is wet. Good set of headphones will rectify this, or turn up the speakers. Max fan button is not ABSOLUTELY necessary. Unit will scale fan with temps until reaching max on it's own. Nice to have a manual "oh shoot" button tho. This + SSD =epic win performance, if you can handle the overly glossy plastic [vinyl covers: google!
Look elsewhere
Pros: Feature set LOOKS nice . . on paper.
Cons: I have fought with this thing for well over a year and a half. It never was stable, even at stock. Random resets during light or no usage. Common vdroop issue, and eventually I got it more or less stable with 1.35v @ 4.2Ghz. Time passed, and I built a 3930k with an ASrock X79 motherboard, which I promptly returned for the exact same issue. it's rampage IV extreme replacement does not have this issue. UNFORTUNATELY, my wife inherited THIS computer, which worked fine for awhile. . until I tried to scale back the overclock to save a few bucks on the electric bill. Stability gone, even after resetting everything to the formerly "stable" overclock.
Overall Review: I didn't realize until I built my 2nd machine, but these boards are NOT the quality they used to be. Hopefully Asus will re-acquire Asrock and quality will return to normal but: until then. . you get what you pay for. These boards have an excellent feature set and look too good to be true, and in this case it's a definite case of caveat emptor. Spend another $20 or $30, get an Asus, gigabyte, or MSI. Don't take a chance on this one, it's just not worth the risk
Pretty and quick
Pros: LEDs are functional out of the box, even on an Asus Rampage IV extreme. run as advertised at 8-8-8-24 1N @ 1.5v
Cons: One LED on ONE of the EIGHT sticks I bought. . . has a blue LED instead of a green one in ONE location. Loses 1 egg for quality control/testing. I'm not bothered enough by the . . personality of that one stick to RMA it, but it does say something that an obvious flaw like this made it through QC testing unnoticed.
Overall Review: I bought these on Shell shocker for my SKT 2011 board KNOWING the Ballistix mod utility would not work, and I was not disappointed. I cannot adjust the LEDs at all, though I've read if you set them the way you want them in another computer and transplant they will retain the settings. For my uses, they're already set the way I wanted them to be, so it's a non issue, but be mindful that the SKT 2011 issue with these sticks was never resolved [an answer I could not find online, hence I'm documenting it here for future seekers]
Not bad
Pros: Decent feel for a non mechanical keyboard, the green matches the rest of my motif. Key backlighting is sharp and precise, not too bright, not too dim.
Cons: I've tried and returned about 6 Lycosa keyboards in my lifetime, and had minor [LED] issues with black widows. I haven't had any issues with the deathstalker YET, but on this one razer has a rep I'm nervous about.
Overall Review: I bought this to semi-replace a Mionix Zibal 60 mechanical keyboard that I was using for both typing and general gaming. Love it in typing, beat the heck out of it in gaming. . I wanted something to train my fingers to be a bit lighter, and the deathstalker ultimate is out of stock for the next 6months. I bought this from a local brick and mortar blue shirt store, that way if I DO have any issues I can return it. . but I haven't had any problems yet. It has a nice feel, nice looks. . . it's probably much more worth it for the price point than it's big brother. Am not the world's biggest fan of having to login to razer to save settings [Synapse 2.0] but it does work well enough. Overall so far has been a very quality board for the price.
Addendum
Pros: Addendum to below review to address one crucial item
Cons: See Other
Overall Review: Originally I had stated that one power button felt "dead" and did not light up. I fixed the lighting [user error] and I also found that if you back out the screws that secure the power button to the outside shell, it fixes the issue! Do not confuse this with the actual tan power button on the inside that the black button contacts to ; )
7 months in
Pros: After 7 months I have had no major issues with this case. No issues with repeated drive swapping, regular monthly cleanings with compressed air on the outside of the case vents, not much on the way of dust on the inside [I JUST did the first interior cleaning a few weeks ago, and it was only a light dusting] Handled being thrown around and stored for a month during an out of state move, held together beautifully.
Cons: airflow [and by that I mean the number of fan mounts and vents] is phenominal. the actual fans that come WITH the case is another story. The large fans LOOK great, but they move virtually no air. If you're in need of cooling, consider replacing the front and top fans [on top, a corsiar h100 fits nicely]. Yes, this is a nitpick, but I've had BSOD due to gfx [xfire 7950s] because the deisgn of the cards vents hot air to case, and the stock fans weren't exhausting quickly enough.
Overall Review: I had one of the SATA connectors for the hot swap bays break on me during initial install [seems some of them are just brittle] Had no issue RMAing just the small piece for a replacement. Also, like some, I have a lot of wires run behind the mobo tray, but I made sure to keep everything as flat and tied up neatly as possible. As a result, I have no issues getting the back on and off. Yes, it's a little snug both ways, but that's because the back plate is actually well sized to the case. Overall, I'm VERY satisfied with this case. Naturally I've replaced several fans to combat the heat issue, and keep in mind if you want to replace the side fan, you will probably have to do some cutting/splicing or some soldering due to the unique design. Corsair H100 fits perfectly with this unit, though with the rampage IV etreme board the mobo power sticks up too far blocking the install of fan 4. Your mileage may vary ^^
