Great system for a very good price!
Pros: Very good build quality with a strong base and lid. Battery life of 3+ hours. Bright and evenly-lit LED LCD. Comes with XP SP3 and Vista Business 32 + driver and apps CD. Qualifies for Windows 7 Pro upgrade. Keyboard has no flex and is not a fingerprint magnet. 250-Gb HDD on mine is a Hitachi - no cheapy Ocean-gate on this system. No problems with wireless card or anything else!!
Cons: I knew this in advance - but it does not have a webcam or built-in microphone. Not a big deal - but Dell Quickset is not available for this system - so no on-screen brightness meter, etc.
Overall Review: I am very, very happy with this system. I wanted a knock-about 15" system with good battery life. The Vostro 1520 is built well enough to last for years. NewEgg strikes again with a superb system for a very good price!!
Do Not Waste Your Money
Pros: Only one pro - it was less than $100.
Cons: After a great experience with an Intel X-25 - I decided to try an OCZ drive. What a mistake!! First of all - they didn't even take the time to make it the correct size - it will not correctly fit any of the three caddies I tried it in. Then - none of the three laptops (Acer, H-P and Compaq 8510w) would recognize it in SATA mode. I finally got it to install in IDE-mode on the Compaq and it lasted two days. Now it is completely dead - not recognized as a device. When it did work - it only reduced the bootup time on Win 7 to 45 seconds - versus the ~ 15 sec for the Intel drive on a different Acer (3810).
Overall Review: This may be a good drive for someone who wants to tinker a lot - I bought this drive to use on a daily basis and it is a failure. Caveat emptor!
Almost an SSD for the Price
Pros: I hesitated buying this drive given previous experiences with Seagate. But - this drive has made a believer out of me. Boot time and performance now almost as fast as my Intel SSD. W7 on Dell XPS boots in less than 20 seconds - and, after using it for a while, it runs much faster than using a platter-only drive.
Cons: The Egg dropped the price after I bought mine!!
Overall Review: The W7 install appeared to hang at first - it took quite a while before the clean install kicked off. BIOS is set to AHCI - but I'm not sure if thats the best setting.
Nice phone with several problems
Pros: Great display, very smooth OS and tranisitions between menus, good battery life, excellent build quality, relatively easy to update to Mango/7.5
Cons: Few apps and games, limited customization options, no cellular data counter, serious SMS flaw discovered recently, latest HTC Update breaks MAC address - see below. Mine was from Tesla / Australia and included a worthless Australian-pronged charger. The box had been opened and resealed - but the phone did appear new and untouched.
Overall Review: I really wanted to like this phone - HTC's build quality, and the display, is excellent. But, latest HTC update causes it to have a new MAC address each time the phone is rebooted - a definite no-go if you use MAC address filtering on your network. Hopefully the SMS flaw will be patched quickly by Microsoft. Right now - there are too many negatives for me to recommend this phone.
Great Phone with Limitations
Pros: Very high build quality, bright and clear display, great battery life, Bluetooth comms, compact and solidly built, Mango/7.5 is a big improvement over 7.0, and WP7 is excellent with MS Office apps.
Cons: I highly recommend the Mozart itself - but Windows Phone OS still needs a bunch of work. The Windows app store has a limited selection and many decent apps cost too much. I can't find an app to track cellular data usage which is important to me. Images in email messages (like from stationary in Apple Mail) still don't display correctly. Last but not least - the maps are still truly terrible!
Overall Review: This is the second Mozart 7 I have owned - I sold the first one due to frustrations with Windows Phone 7. I use this phone with my work SIM, which severely restricts data usage, and the Mozart/WP7 is great for calling only.
Great small laptop for the money
Pros: Matte finished lid, solid build and great build quality. I could not find any blems or build problems. Much faster than my old Intel SU4100 version of the same laptop. Easy to upgrade RAM to 4-Gb. 3G capability is a real bonus - but the modem appears to be locked to AT&T. Well-built and well-designed power brick and input - much, much better design than the cheap tiny input doohickey on small A*US laptops. Nice keyboard with only a little flex.
Cons: Narrow viewing angles on the LCD - and colors look muted - but what do you expect for the price? Sound is weak - but not bad considering 11.6-inch screen size (small speakers). Too much junkware but not as bad as in the past.
Overall Review: No prob lems with RAM upgrade - I swiped a 2-Gb DDR3 chip from my Mac Mini. System booted up fine and recognized all 4-Gb. If it weren't for the subpar LCD - this is almost a poor man's MB Air. I bought this for a high-school age relative - I liked it enough that I'm buying one for myself!
