Works great for Photoshop CS4

PNY GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card VCG86512GXWB-OC
PNY GeForce 8600 GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Support Video Card VCG86512GXWB-OC

Pros: Supports Photoshop CS4 GPU acceleration. Dual DVI. Inexpensive. Quiet.

Cons: None so far.

Overall Review: I needed to upgrade my video card to support the new GPU accelerated features in Photoshop CS4. I installed this card with the latest drivers from the NVidia website, and it works great.

Most Critical Review

HP HDX16 driver conflicts & cannot re-assign buttons!

Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000

Pros: Works OK as a basic bluetooth mouse.

Cons: Cannot re-assign buttons on this mouse, per Microsoft KB953695, "The Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 does not let you reassign the functions of its buttons. The Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 does not use the button reassigning features of Microsoft IntelliPoint software." Conflicts with remote control drivers that come on some late HP laptops including the HDX16. Creates error "HID data has stopped working". You have to move some DLLs to avoid this problem. HP has no other solution. Google is your friend!

Overall Review: Negative props to the guy that said you can reassign the buttons on this mouse! He obviously never tried it. Have not had these problems with the Logitech V470 on similar HP laptops. I'm going back to being a Logitech guy. I'd return this mouse but it's not worth the time and cost for a $30 item.

Update to my previous review

FREECOM ToughDrive Pro 160GB USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive 28686
FREECOM ToughDrive Pro 160GB USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive 28686

Pros: The ruggedized enclosure is head and shoulders above any other enclosure I have seen for an external 2.5" drive. The included OEM version of Acronis True Image 8.0 is considerably easier for a non-technical person to understand and operate than the full version. The OEM version of Acronis can be upgraded to the full version at a 40% discount. The included Freecom software for encryption and file & settings copying looks very straight-forward to use. The blue lighting of the USB connector is very cool looking, it pulses while data is being transferred and turns off when the drive is disconnected via Windows.

Cons: The supplied USB extension cable was defective and that was the cause of the "Delayed Write" errors I reported in my previous review. I have replaced the extension cable with a Belkin shielded extension cable (6') and now everything is groovy! The included OEM version of Acronis True Image 8.0 is very basic. Only full image backups are supported - no incremental backups, as in the full version of Acronis. This can also be an advantage, as noted elsewhere in this review. The disk comes formatted in FAT32 for maximum compatibility (that is, to Windows 9x or ME) so many people will want to reformat to NTFS, which is easily accomplished.

Overall Review: This is a very nice little package for backing up a laptop. I got the 100GB version for a techno-phobic friend that runs her business on her laptop. Seriously, she has anxiety attacks when it comes to stuff like this. The limited OEM version of Acronis 8.0 has proven to be a tremendous advantage for this person, due to its simplicity. She has taken to it like a duck to water and feels very comfortable with it.

Nice durable external drive

FREECOM ToughDrive Pro 160GB USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive 28686
FREECOM ToughDrive Pro 160GB USB 2.0 2.5" External Hard Drive 28686

Pros: This is a nice, durable external drive that is spec'd to be able to take some abuse and still protect the drive mechanism. It also is a very nice and convenient design. It works flawlessly as long as I avoid the USB extension cable that comes with it (see Cons). It's pretty fast for an external drive!

Cons: When I try to use the USB extension cable that comes with this drive, I eventually get a "Delayed Write" error. As long as as I connect the drive directly with it's built-in connector it works perfectly. Will contact Freecom to discuss this issue. This is the reason I gave this a good rather than excellent rating. Comes formatted in FAT32 for Win 9x/ME compatibility. I reformatted to NTFS.

Overall Review: I ordered the 100GB version for a friend and had no trouble with it, even when using the USB extension cable.

Very useful item!

APRICORN ADW-USB-KIT IDE/PATA/SATA to USB HDD Adapter
APRICORN ADW-USB-KIT IDE/PATA/SATA to USB HDD Adapter

Pros: Very convenient for prepping disk drives. The EZ Gig II software worked flawlessly.

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I used this to transfer the contents of my failing laptop drive to a new drive. The old drive was 60GB and the new 80GB - and this worked perfectly, I was very pleased. Now I have an easy way to prep and test and any drive, and I have already used it twice to help friends out!

GREAT charger!

POWEREX MH-C204W 1-Hour Worldwide Travel Conditioning Charger w/ 8-pack 2700mAh Pre-charged and Ready-to-use Batteries
POWEREX MH-C204W 1-Hour Worldwide Travel Conditioning Charger w/ 8-pack 2700mAh Pre-charged and Ready-to-use Batteries

Pros: Small and light with a short power cord, which is the perfect compromise for travel in my experience. WORKS GREAT!

Cons: None.

Overall Review: I had some rechargeable AA batteries laying around that could barely hold a charge after a couple of years of use with a run-of-the-mill charger. I ran them through the reconditioning cycle in this charger and now they work BETTER than new!
