Plug and Play -- truly
Pros: No setup required, low-cost solution.
Cons: None
Overall Review: Used this for an entertainment center. Had two ethernet feed cables one for set top box and other for TV. I needed to recover one cable to reroute to another room. This box is extremely easy to install. I shut off the power strip to all the devices, plugged the power cord in, switch in, plugged the ethernet cables from the router into port 1, and used 2, 3, and 4 for the TV, set top box, and blu-ray player. Turned the power on, got all green lights. I tried each device and they all worked great!
CD burning trouble
Pros: Small size. Quiet when playing CDs.
Cons: With my unit in my system, I could not burn CDs from .cue sheet files. I tried three different programs. I finally burned a few discs, but had the same problem when I rebooted.
Overall Review: RMA'd for refund. Build quality seems lower than NEC and BenQ drives. Flimsier front plate and drawer.
Works Okay
Pros: Comes in box with screws and a Sata 2 data cable, nothing else to buy. Hooked up as a secondary drive in a new HP desktop. Turned computer on, Windows 7 found the new hardware, went into Computer/Manage/Disk Management, right clicked on Hitachi drive, initialized it, and did a quick format to NTFS default settings. Then used the HP disk utilities to quick test the drive. All tests passed. Now I have a good backup drive.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: Got it with the 15-dollar off coupon, free shipping, whatta deal!! Got the Windows 7 installation tips from a poster on this review board. All right Newegg!
Follow up problems
Pros: Reads fast, plays back well, burns fast but read the CONS, reasonably quiet, price.
Cons: Changing my rating from 5 to 2. Using quality Verbatim + and - DVDR discs, I find that movies have playback (pixelation) problems playing back in my standalone Panasonic player. This is despite the fact that the discs scan well in error scans and play back fine in my computer. An old BenQ drive and an old NEC drive burn discs from the same ISO images that play back perfectly in the Panasonic.
Overall Review: Too bad, because this would be a terrific drive for the price....I bought two of them only to be disappointed (too late to return them).
Best deal I've seen
Pros: Burns DVDs and CDs fast with good quality, reads DVDs and CDs fast. Bitsetting possible with DVD+ discs. Not very noisy when reading/writing DVDs, a little noisier when reading/writing CDs.
Cons: None at this price; buy two!!!
Overall Review: This is as good as anything else out there for a replacement drive...I bought mine here at Newegg...
Seems to be a good budget unit
Pros: Installed in 15 minutes in HP a450n system replacing stock power supply in preparation for pending installation of a 7300GT video card. It works. Runs cool.
Cons: Noisier fan swoosh than stock HiPro 250 watt supply.
Overall Review: Hope it works with new video card -- not installed yet, still "burning in" power supply. Bought at newegg promo price with mail in rebate making for a cheap purchase. Unless you get a dirt cheap deal, shop around.
