Update and memory notes

ASUS Eee PC EeePC4G-BK029 Black Intel Mobile CPU 7" WVGA 512MB Memory 4GB SSD Netbook
ASUS Eee PC EeePC4G-BK029 Black Intel Mobile CPU 7" WVGA 512MB Memory 4GB SSD Netbook

Pros: Just a note on memory. My 4G had a PC2-3200 512MB SODIMM installed. Although Crucial indicated a 2GB PC2-5300 SODIMM would work here, following install the machine only seems to see 1GB usable. The hardware tool finds 2GB, but system info and /proc/meminfo both indicate 1GB. No big deal for me, just thought I'd post. Still love this little machine! The display is really terrific for it's size.

Cons: I did run into an issue configuring Thunderbird for email since I can't scroll down enough to click on a couple options for my POP account!

Full Featured, but LOUD. Read on for fix.

QNAP TS-209 Pro II Diskless System All-in-one NAS Server for SMB,SOHO and Home Users
QNAP TS-209 Pro II Diskless System All-in-one NAS Server for SMB,SOHO and Home Users

Pros: Lots of functionality - web server, itunes server, lots of supported protocols including Appletalk, nfs, smb, ftp. Drives are hot swap (RAID-1). Very simple to use web interface. Overall well built. Lost points due to noise and the fact that I needed to mod the device for it to be usable.

Cons: LOUD due to exceptionally low quality internal fan. Since the fan is an odd size, replacement options are limited. Less expensive options available if budget conscious.

Overall Review: The device was SO loud I couldn't keep it running in my office across from my bedroom. Replaced the 70mm (odd size) internal fan with a Nexus 70mm quiet fan and now I can't hear it. The Nexus barely fit into the spot where the original fan was, but loosened a couple screws and got it in there. Drives stay below 35 deg C with the new fan.

Great bargain!

ASUS Eee PC EeePC4G-BK029 Black Intel Mobile CPU 7" WVGA 512MB Memory 4GB SSD Netbook

Pros: These make great little travel machines, something for the kids to bang on, hobby machines requiring little power. Built on a Linux OS for virtually unlimited possibilities - anyone clustered a few of these? How about to remote control your "main" computers from the couch using rdesktop or vnc? 4GB storage doesn't seem like a lot, but through on one or more USB key drives - 8GB, even 16GB drives are affordable now - and add more.

Cons: Absolutely needs more memory - plenty cheap enough from Crucial or others though. That screen is a bit tough, but can't really complain for the price.
