reliable decent board

ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
ASUS M4A88T-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

Pros: first time setup was a breeze, like, no setup. it just booted on up and didn't have to manually adjust anything. this is a first for me. i'm used to having to tweak memory timings and voltages, and cpu clocks to match in order to get a stable runnin system with every new build. stable little board, got onboard graphics incase you ever have video card probs and need to trouble shoot. plenty of options in bios, displays actual voltage outputs in bios, which is a godsent. overclocking is easy, haven't gotten too far into that yet. nice visual look, :P if you're into that. plenty of fan connectors on the mb, plenty of usb dongle plugs, plenty of expansion slots, moderate amount of sata plugs.

Cons: terrible i/o shield. last mb i got from asus was clean cut with no metal tabs and had a soft protective backing (p5n-d) northbridge runs a little hot, but cpu is water cooled with that corsair h50 idiot proof water cooler. so there's no air blowing across it except from the side panel fan and general case airflow. dissapointed no nb fan was included. bells and whistles are just that, that ez overclock or turbo, whatever it's called, and the coreunlocker are more just for show, anything regarding them can be done in bios... which is actually a good thing, doesn't change the fact that they added parts that are un-needed. more stuff to burn up/break :P absolutely bare minimun accessories. every other board i've gotten from these guys came with boatloads of stuff to use. cables out the yinyang, usb dongles, firewire dongles, exterior sata dongles, sli/crossfire cables. but that means i got plenty of spare parts layin around.

Overall Review: this is my first amd board, i'm def happy with it. upgraded from the p5n-d with 4 gigs of 800mhz ddr2/ and a 2.8 intel dual core overclocked to 4.0ghz. I know i'm not going to get the same overclocking potential with amd, but the price reflects that. i'm running phenom II x4 965 3.4 ghz and 8 gigs (2x4) corsair xms2 1600mhz ddr3 went from running battlefied bad company on high/med in directx9 mode no aa no af and it being a little studdery at times to running it directx10 highest graphics, highest aa and af. and it being butter smooth. same graphics card, geforce gtx 400 thats probly the most graphics intesive game i play that i can make reference to. i'll be sure to update with any overclocking issues once i start on that.

CM Storm Sniper - Gaming Mid Tower Computer Case with Fan Controller and LED Light Switch
CM Storm Sniper - Gaming Mid Tower Computer Case with Fan Controller and LED Light Switch

Pros: Sturdy, rock solid. Excellent air circulation without all the dust. copious amount of room for cables, add-on fans and accessories. plenty of front panel usb slots. Tool-less upgrades after initial build. snap off removable dust filter on the front air intake. for that matter, dust filters, everywhere you'd use for air intake.

Cons: heavy, i've moved twice in the 3 years i've owned it and it's a freakin beast. to haul around. or anytime i need to take it outside to blow out the filters. If all possible fans are plugged into the front panel fan control, max fan speed is reduced. if you start splitting the power cables to accommodate more fans, expect a big drop off in max rpm. this is only an issue when you add additional aftermarket fans, not those included. manual fan control becomes bothersome and a hassle. fun for the first week maybe, then i just started leaving it all the way up or down.

Overall Review: i've owned this thing quite a while, and it's still a boss. glad i finally invested in a nice case a few years back. Do yourself a favor and get a decent case. It's had two different builds in it by now and i still don't plan to deviate from it. next build will be in it too. drive bays are large and roomy, with one dvd drive in it, i just wedged a cooler master cpu water cooler in the remaining bays. due to vented drive bay covers, it gets fresh air and still has room for a push-pull config

satisfying purchase

ThinkPad Notebook with Docking Station 2.00GHz 2GB Memory 80GB HDD 14.1" Windows XP Professional T61

Pros: For the price a very decent machine. Enough power for a typical user. clean, almost new look.

Cons: little wear on some keyboard letters, nothing substantial

Overall Review: Bought this for my father. I don't know how this would run windows 7, But it runs a typical linux installation just fine. Actually quite well, feeling more than adequate in terms of resources. For his common tasks of web/email/ordering parts/pdf viewing, I don't think i could have gotten a better deal and i'm happy he's getting good performance out of it. If i actually needed a laptop, i'de grab one without hesitation.
