Great headphones for a digital piano

Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones
Sennheiser HD598 On-Ear Headphones

Pros: I bought these headphones to use with my high-end Kawai CA95 digital piano. I am very, very pleased with both the sound and comfort of these headphones. I played for 2 hours the first day I got them and truly forgot I was wearing them. These are an 'open back design' which results in a sound experience that many describe as the sound being more natural and resulting in sound that better represents the spatial sound characteristics of a piano. Conversely, 'closed back' phones tend to make it sound like the sound is coming from 'within your head'. In addition, because my playing environment is generally fairly quiet I like being able to hear any ambient sounds - like being called to dinner - in the room around me. Acoustically (to my ears), these headphones faithfully reproduce the sound of my digital piano (which in turn is designed to faithfully reproduce the sound of a Kawai acoustic concert grand). This is the first pair of higher-priced 'audiophile' headphones that I have owned, but compared to the budget phones I had been using there is ABSOLUTELY no comparison. I did quite a bit of research for these, specifically for use with a digital piano, prior to purchase. One source of good information that I found was the Piano World on-line piano forum (a good source for ALL things piano, by the way). I expect I'm not supposed to link to this forum but I would recommend this site for a number of digital pianist' perspective on headphones. Some have said that the color and trim of the headphones reminds them of the interior of a 1980's German sports sedan. Well, I couldn't afford a car like that in the 80's (or now, for that matter), so I think the color and design is pretty cool and the build quality seems very good. In many general discussion about headphones, there are usually 'audiophiles' who recommend a separate headphone amplifier. With my piano at least, I see no need, as I only need to turn the volume control to about 1/3 of maximum to match the same sound level of the piano's native speaker system at full volume. In other words, these headphones seem pretty 'efficient' in my use. My piano has 1/4" headphone jacks I don't use the supplied 3.5mm adapter. Finally, these headphones come with a 10 foot audio cord that allows me to get up and get music from the cabinet next to the piano. If 10 feet is too much length for your usage, the cord can be replaced with a 4.5 foot version available from Sennheiser or other sources - according to what I've read.

Cons: .
