Just Do It
Pros: Has everything I need to update my system. Bios update took under ten minutes; total time.
Cons: Had a problem running a 32 bit operating system with the AMD 955 cpu; all 64 bit OS's seem to run fine.
Overall Review: Before you install this MB; go to the Asus website with the computer you used to order this part, go to the support section, pick this motherboard and download the latest bios; total time 2 minutes. Unzip the file you downloaded and burn the file to a CD; total time under 2 minutes. Install this MB, enter BIOS setup when you power up, go to tools and run EZFlash. With the CD you burned in a CD (or DVD) drive, updating the BIOS takes about a minute. It is that easy. Whithout the BIOS update, the MB recognized my AMD 955BE as an AMD 945, but it booted and ran.
ASUS's Downhill Slide
Pros: Has the ASUS name on the box and all the features I wanted on the motherboard.
Cons: First motherboard was DOA, and NEWEGG replaced it imediately with an RMA. The replacement motherboard lasted 97 days before it refused to POST. I used to equate the ASUS name with quality; that opinion is falling fast.
Overall Review: This system was a replacement for an ASUS motherboard that failed after 11 months. I thought my bad luck with ASUS was over with one bad motherboard in 18 years of doing this; little did I realize it had only begun. I am staying away from ASUS until they get their quality back to its previous level.
update to 55 code
Pros: legacy connectors for obsolete floppy drives
Cons: does not support ivy bridge out of the box (55 error code). tried a g860 sandy bridge, got a 45 error code; it too was too new for the bios. customer service agreed to send me a new bios chip with updated bios to fix the problem. got the new chip yesterday; 23 days later; marked as ver 2.20. still got a 55 error code with the ivy bridge; swapped to the g860 sandy bridge and still got a 55 error code with an immediate power down of the motherboard (something new). decided to end my two month journey of frustration with this board, and ended its functionality forever. small satisfaction for me; no regrets, however.
Overall Review: in support of customer service taking 23 days to get an updated (?) bios chip to me; you have to consider the time they had off for the holidays. as a side note, there are cheaper ways to transfer data from your old floppy disks than building a dedicated computer; it just sounded like a good idea on a late night, or something.
Update from 3/27/09
Pros: none
Cons: see previous review.
Overall Review: has been over six weeks now, and still no word from tech support, or customer support. i even added my email address to the comment section of the "why are you uninstalling our product" survey on two of my computers while uninstalling.
Pros: Bubble Wrap!!!! How can you go wrong when you get free bubble wrap? They install automatically on both Windows XP and Vista machines, and function as advertised. I finally got to use some of those spare SATA cables I have laying around.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: It amazes me every day that you can buy technology for under twenty five dollars that just a couple years ago was still theoretical. Then to have over 99 percent of the units function flawlessly out of the bubble wrap? Simply amazing. If I cannot afford to replace these units every couple years due to wear and tear, I need to cut back on magazine subscriptions or something.
Pros: none yet, other than it installed on one of three computers without initial error messages.
Cons: would only activate on the first computer; subsequent computers got an "activation code in wrong format" error. caused random failures on the one computer installed on. failures like the ethernet controller; the onboard sound driver; windows update and any program i have loaded in the quickstart tray.
Overall Review: there is no phone number for tech support; only an email adress. i have not heard back from emails i have sent.
