**TIP!** Vista & Terabyte Drives **TIP!**

Western Digital Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
Western Digital Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Expect performance & reliability from WD Caviar *BLACK* series, you'll get it! If you're frequently making huge data transfers & want great performance and reliability with frequent access to that data, this is the best "Bang for the Buck" choice short of the industrial-strength-money-is-no-object RE3 and RE2 models.

Cons: Fortunately, so far, I have had no DOA's with Newegg hard drives, despite the carelessness of how these OEM hard drives are being packed. Many of the reviews here have same major gripe. Come on Newegg Shipping Dept, live up to the magnificent overall Newegg offerings and service we've come to know and love. Here's how: Roll them INDIVIDUALLY in bubble wrap and place them IN THE CENTER of foam peanuts in a much LARGER box. PLEASE DO NOT place them on the BOTTOM of a small box and then merely add a few foam peanuts on top.

Overall Review: TIP DEPT: As a 'second, non-boot drive' in a new MS Vista OS installation, a 1Tb drive appeared in the storage maintenance area of the control panel options as only having 30Mb of available space AFTER all the Vista updates but BEFORE the Service Pack 1 update. Without special partitioning hard drive software, you can "PRETEND" to install Vista on it, by disconnecting other drives, booting the Vista OS CD, using Vista's initial partioning routines to get the entire available drive space, then turn off the computer before continuing. Reconnect the correct Boot and other drives, fire it up and BINGO! you now have your precious 930Gb of space ready for the long 4-6 hour full format. Yeah, the LONNNNNGG format method to help insure your 1Tb investment will not require a Return Authorization and the associated delay hassle. This, particularly due the lame packing habits of Newegg's Shipping Dept.

Exceptional Price vs Benefits!

WD TV Live Hub 1TB Media Center - WDBABZ0010BBK-NESN
WD TV Live Hub 1TB Media Center - WDBABZ0010BBK-NESN

Pros: Absolutely excellent playback quality on 1080p w/DTS file. A very, very nice user interface with variety of content display options makes for a somewhat bulletproof playback experience for even the technically impaired. Most all the expected media storage or access categories are among the main menu selections. A little more knowledge or practice may be necessary for organizing, transferring and storing your private collections. Just put some time into exploring file and system menus, practice on small files (easily deleted) and successful media management all becomes clear! Just remove the network cable to confirm transfer and playback from internal storage. Occasional quick restarts will refresh and speed the first time validations process.

Cons: None really. Would have given it 5 stars if capable of direct transfers via USB 3.0!

Overall Review: The Whining Reviewers should recognize that this is NOT a fully capable computer and therefore should not expect similar connections and transfer speeds. My full DVD-converted-to-MKVs (avg size 4.3Gb) take about 15 minutes each direct from computer drive while 1,000+ DIVX files (avg size 700Mb) connected via USB2.0 Dock took approx 80hrs via network synchro mode by tagging multiple genre folders containing 125 to 200 files each.

Economical & Reliable Video Storage

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4EG HD155UI 1.5TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4EG HD155UI 1.5TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Slow for data use but great for storing and playing MKV video files made from DVDs for convenient use with home theater media players. Fast & free Newegg deliveries make periodic purchases practical and economical.

Cons: none.

Overall Review: Swift USB transfers non-existent. Use SATA or eSATA connections for transfers. Will give 5th egg when these become even cheaper!

Tiny, Simple & Basic

MOTOROLA L401 1.9 GHz Digital DECT 6.0 1X Handsets Cordless Phone Integrated Answering Machine
MOTOROLA L401 1.9 GHz Digital DECT 6.0 1X Handsets Cordless Phone Integrated Answering Machine

Pros: Economical replacement for the much less frequently used land-line home phone, replacing my old Panasonic KX-TG5240M in one-fourth the desktop real estate.

Cons: None really. You get what you pay for.

Overall Review: Locally, bought a remote phone version of this same model while waiting for this base station model to arrive. It registered flawlessly with the base station.

Best Bang for the Buck

D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit
D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Pros: Absolutely dependable & feature rich. Currently, IMHO, the best buy in a home wireless router for the typical techie.

Cons: Modern and clean but cheap (non-professional) looking white plastic housing.

Overall Review: This router has been around a long time for good reasons evidenced by over 1600 reviews you can trust.

Cheap & Tidy Power for Panasonic Network Cameras

D-Link DES-1008PA Unmanaged Desktop Switch with 4 PoE Ports
D-Link DES-1008PA Unmanaged Desktop Switch with 4 PoE Ports

Pros: Replaced four excellent but cluttersome 3-Com POE power inserters with this device during recent upgrades/replacements for my cable modem, router & switch. This device is more than adequate for powering four of my BB-HCM PNCs (715A, 531A, 515A & 511A).

Cons: Still a bit too expensive (hence 4 eggs). I Would have purchased one of several other new units of its type elseware for under $100 but preferred Newegg's excellent & speedy service & shipping along with other items from Newegg I wanted for this project.

Overall Review: I've had good luck with the performance and longevity of other D-Link devices, so I further justified the higher price... this time. Later, I'd like to find another of these (less expensive) to replace my remaining active power inserters or perhaps upgrade this one to an 8-port POE version.
