Media Players Have Come a Long Ways

Masscool MP-1372RS 1080P HDMI 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDD/USB/NET HD Media Player with Dolby/DTS/RMVB/MKV/H.264
Masscool MP-1372RS 1080P HDMI 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDD/USB/NET HD Media Player with Dolby/DTS/RMVB/MKV/H.264

Pros: This player flawlessly played all files I've played so far. MKV, MP4, AVI, etc. You name it, it plays it. I switched my TV back and forth between inputs playing a Bluray file of Transformers on my Win 7 HTPC and this player. The picture looked just as good on both on a 120hz 55" LCD. One thing to note, subtitles are much easier to turn on and off with the media player than Windows 7 MCE. I have to close MCE, and open VOB sub to turn subtitles off on my PC.

Cons: The interface is easy to navigate through but perhaps a little primitive considering people will potentially be using this in their living room. It's Linux based. Not bad. Just a little more file based and less media picture menu oriented. It's definitely not Media Portal or MCE 2007. Far from it.

Overall Review: I had an extra 1.5tb HDD laying around. I bought this for my brother and through the 1.5tb HDD in it. You honestly do not need an internal HDD with all the options this thing has to connect unless you have Windows 7. It plays movies very well through my network when I have it plugged into my router. You can plug a USB drive in the front and transfer movies or files from the USB drive to the HDD inside with the remote, or play the files directly off the USB with ease. Windows 7 doesn't play well with others. I'm sure there is a way to tweak but I can't stay connected to my computer. Every time I turn the media player off it takes a while to reconnect and watch movies on my Windows 7 PC. I'm sure someone has found a way around it. I haven't researched resolving this issue because it really doesn't matter when you have a 1.5tb HDD in it. Windows XP is very friendly. It always connects easily. Just plug the USB in your PC and transfer files like its a portable HDD.

Lovely

LG 55" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV
LG 55" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV

Pros: The picture is beautiful. At first I thought everything looked like a news broadcast. Batman Dark Knight looked so real, a little too real. I got used to it. Got it from an electronics store for only 1149 so yeah!! People come over and think it's an LED when i'm playing Bluray files.

Cons: Nada

Overall Review: I love it. I was going to get a 47" but they were sold out. I was itching to get a TV like an addict while I was in the store and would not take no for an answer. I bought this one instead because it was available. I thought it was going to look HUGE and overpowering. I was actually concerned. They delivered the TV and it looked great. Big enough but not too big. I'm glad I got this now.

Lound and Clear RM7 Rear Channels

Polk Audio RM705 5.1 CH Home Theater System, Black
Polk Audio RM705 5.1 CH Home Theater System, Black

Pros: I just bought 2 RM7 satellites from a different electronics store. I currently have Polk R50's as the rear channels. The R50's are very big but sound very good. I was a little concerned as the RM7's are extremely small but had to check them out. They are loud and clear! I do not hear any weird noises at all. Very impressive for such a small package. I love the wall mounts too. I'm excited and can't wait to mount them. Bye bye R50's. The R50's really are amazing though. I don't have the whole set so I can't comment on it. I have a different set in a 5.1 configuration that I mention in "other thoughts".

Cons: None I can think of. I still can't believe they can be so loud. Not a con.

Overall Review: I have Martin Logan Encore TF's for Front L/R and center. The ML center channel is the best center I have heard yet in the below 500 dollar range but Polk's are very close. Polk center channels are a LOT BIGGER though. If size is not a problem, go with Polk. I don't think the ML's make much of a difference on the left and right front though. The Polk monitor 70's blow them away i'm sure. I have a Polk PSW505 12" sub. These RM7's in the rear keep up without breaking a sweat. Finally some small attractive rear channel speakers.

Pounds the Ground

Polk Audio PSW 111 8" 300 Watt Compact Powered Subwoofer (Single)
Polk Audio PSW 111 8" 300 Watt Compact Powered Subwoofer (Single)

Pros: I bought this sub from a different electronics store for a really good deal. I bought a 12" Polk PSW505 from New Egg. This PSW111 sub is really powerful and shakes the ground. Very impressive for an 8". Technology has come a long ways. The bass is definitely tight. I gotta tell you the PSW505 is a lot more powerful and clean but it's bigger and a little more of an eye soar. This sub is very compact and attractive.

Cons: None

Overall Review: I only used this sub for 2 days so I didn't break it in. It may be a monster after a couple weeks. Not sure.

Perfect for an HTPC

OCZ Vertex Series 2.5" 30GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-1VTX30GXXX
OCZ Vertex Series 2.5" 30GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-1VTX30GXXX

Pros: I placed this in my HTPC and installed Windows 7 64 Bit. I do not have to wait for any screens to load in Media Center anymore. I click movies, they load instantly. I used to click movies, then count to 5 and the folder would finish loading on a SATA 7200 RPM drive. I have over 1,000 movies in the folder on a 7200 RPM drive. My system does not hesitate at all. This is just what I needed because i'm not very patient.

Cons: None. Not even space. I only intend to have the OS on this drive. That's it.

Overall Review: I can't wait till they have a 2tb SSD drive and at an affordable price. These things are ridiculously expensive. This is a truly fantastic upgrade to any PC. You can't beat this kind of speed if you load a lot of data.

Clean Bass

Polk Audio PSW Series PSW505 12" Powered Subwoofer Single
Polk Audio PSW Series PSW505 12" Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: This was replacing a Velodyne sub I bought from an electronics store about 3 weeks ago for the same price. I was not impressed by the Polk sub at all at first. The Velodyne seemed to hit much harder. After a couple days and opening the sub up I realized this sub was very powerful. It seems to rumble and shake the ground without putting out a lot of noise. The Velodyne seemed to make more bass noise without the ground rumbling performance of the Polk. The Velodyne was a 10" so it's not a fair comparison but this Polk sub is awesome in a 12' X 17' room. The Velodyne is going back! I haven't listed to music with this sub so I can't comment on that. I really only wanted this for movies. This sub is truly an amazing deal.

Cons: None yet and I can't imagine I will ever have a con.

Overall Review: This sub is not that big for a 12". It is big but of course you should expect that. I think it looks great with the my home theater system. My gf keeps catching me glancing at it and smiling. Sad, I know. I keep putting movies like Transformers, King Kong, and Jurassic Park on and going directly to all the bass intensive scenes. This Polk sub is really shaking the ground.
