Update to my 10/1 review

Panasonic Viera 42" 1080p 60Hz LED-LCD HDTV TC-L42E3
Panasonic Viera 42" 1080p 60Hz LED-LCD HDTV TC-L42E3

Pros: I posted a review on 10/1 about the screen on this Panasonic being hopelessly dark out of the box. I finally went to a local big box store to look for another TV to replace it. While I was there, I mentioned my situation with this Panasonic to a salesman. Apparently there is an advanced video setting called C.A.T.S. It's a feature that tries to dynamically adjust the brightness based on ambient light in the room. By default, this monitor ships with that feature turned on. The salesman said that the first thing they do with these TVs is to turn that off. As soon as I did that, the Standard and Cinema modes brightened considerably. And apparently, most other brands of TV have a similar feature; none of them work very well, though. I'm now raising my evaluation of this TV to 4 eggs.

Cons: See my review.

Not worth anyone's money

Panasonic DMC-ZS5S Silver 12.1 MP 12X Optical Zoom 25mm Wide Angle Digital Camera
Panasonic DMC-ZS5S Silver 12.1 MP 12X Optical Zoom 25mm Wide Angle Digital Camera

Pros: Pros: * menus are intuitive * quickmenu button is very useful * viewfinder/screen is bright * all-metal construction feels good; nice heft

Cons: * The little metal door for accessing the battery compartment and memory card is EXTREMELY flimsy. It's very easy to put the battery and/or card in wrong, and wind up bending this door to close the compartment. * The USB port on the side of the camera (to connect it to your computer) does not take the standard mini-USB cable. Panasonic does include a compatible USB cable for you to use. However, it is an even **smaller** size than the standard mini-USB (perhaps it's a Japan market size). As a result, none of my existing mini-USB cables that I use with all my other cameras and electronics will work.

Overall Review: More issues: * This Panasonic camera often cannot take a decent indoor picture without relying on flash. Being able to take an indoor picture using ambient light is an important feature, because most people overuse flash and then they wonder why their photos look washed out or amateurish. I've been using Canon cameras for about five years now, in venues such as museums in Europe, indoor art screenings, restaurant photos, nd around the house. What you see on the viewfinder is what you get - and I rarely need flash. * Panasonic tries to remedy this problem with low-light photos by a feature called "Intelligent ISO". This allows you to set a maximum ISO on the camera for your pictures (example ISO Max 800) and then the camera automatically selects the correct ISO. In my experience, what this means is that the camera always selected the maximum ISO that I allowed it. So to get pictures that are sufficiently exposed, you have put up with very high ISO grainy photos.

Amazing little card

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Low Profile Video Card 100357LP
SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7750 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Low Profile Video Card 100357LP

Pros: * Very small size * Super quiet * Fits small form factor Shuttle XPC

Cons: * It doesn't make me bacon and eggs in the morning

Overall Review: I have a Shuttle XPC SH67H3 small form factor system that I assembled myself a year ago. As anyone who has messed around with Shuttle realizes, it's extremely tight fit inside the case. Everything has to be thought out really well. I popped an an EVGA nVidia 9800 GT card into the PCI-e x16 slot and an audio card into the PCI-e x1 slot. The old EVGA card would *barely* fit in the slot for it. it was very long, running all the way back to the CMOS battery. The EVGA fan was rather loud. It would also run so hot (90 degrees or more) that I would worry about overheating. So I would have to remove the outer case of the Shuttle, just to give it sufficient airflow. And then on occasion it would simply lock up during gameplay, and crash the machine. I was about ready to ditch the Shuttle. I thought the flaw was in setting my expectations too high; maybe asking a small form factor Shuttle to serve for both ordinary computing as well as some light gaming (Warcraft, Guild Wars, etc.) was simply too much. But on a last ditch chance, I bought this little card. It's a tremendous upgrade. Twice the video performance, but taking up only half the space. It's whisper-silent, hard to tell the difference in the fan volume when I'm gaming vs. when I am not. I'm getting 45-65 fps in Warcraft with temperatures down in the 65-70 range. Colors are rich, and not a single crash since I installed it. This is my third Sapphire card, and all three have been well worth the money.

Avoid this Shuttle

Shuttle SH67H3 Intel Socket H2(LGA1155) Intel H67 1 x HDMI XPC Barebone
Shuttle SH67H3 Intel Socket H2(LGA1155) Intel H67 1 x HDMI XPC Barebone

Pros: None

Cons: Fails to POST - 50% of the time. Requires hard reboot to get POST. Even then continues to fail, requiring a second or third hard reboot. Very good for the drive, obviously. System is significantly louder than expected. Bought two other fans to try and fix this problem; no luck.

Overall Review: Waste of money. I wish I had never bought this piece of junk.

Beware of this drive

ASUS Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Drive Model BC-12B1ST

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Cannot play ordinary, non-blue ray DVDs. I tested this with: * Software CD (Windows install CD) - works * Music CD - works * Movie DVD - plays 3 seconds and then dies. I tried three different movies with this drive and it consistently fails. RMA back to Newegg.

Not worth the money

Canon A3300 IS Black 16.0 MP 5X Optical Zoom 28mm Wide Angle Digital Camera
Canon A3300 IS Black 16.0 MP 5X Optical Zoom 28mm Wide Angle Digital Camera

Pros: 1. Small form factor, fits in shirt pocket. 2. HD video (720p)

Cons: 1. The battery door is EXTREMELY flimsy. It's actually feels less sturdy than the door for the A3100 IS, which I also own. 2. The external function wheel is hard to manipulate. It's too close to the FUNC SET button. You can hit FUNC SET easily when you're trying to change the flash setting, for example.

Overall Review: This is extremely disappointing. The camera costs almost $180, including shipping, etc. But the image quality is no better than the A3100IS. In fact, this camera looks like an A3100IS that was minimally changed to include HD video.
