Great piece of hardware
Pros: One of the things I have wanted since USB3 became available was a hub which was heavy duty and mountable. This does exactly that. I just bought my second one and they both have performed flawlessly for me. In both cases, mounting them was essential . These are also heavy enough that even if not mounted they don't slide all over the place when trying to insert a cable.
Cons: None so far
Overall Review: Most USB hubs are light and slide around when you try to plug in a device. I have always found this annoying.
StarTech S3510BMU33ET
Pros: Offers both the USB 3.0 and eSATA 6 interface. Easy installation of the hard drive (no tools required) Solidly built of metal!
Cons: No cons yet
Overall Review: I have had generally good luck with StarTech products. This one is no exception
Initial experience
Pros: I was looking for a drive that would fit the case where the 3.5" FDD used to be. The ability to mount possibly different drives at various times has great appeal. The installation turned out to be really simple and everything worked the first time
Cons: A small plastic insert is provided to protect the 4pin berg connector left over from setting drives to 1.5 for old controllers. The package only contains one, so any drive swapping requires swapping the protector as well. This piece of plastic can't have cost more than a few pennys and so I don't see why they did not include more (say 5). Also there is a HDD protective film which is to be installed over the circuit board side on the drive. This looks like an after thought and since there is only one included it becomes questionable if you can really swap drives. My guess is that there was a clearance problem with circuit boards shorting out and this was the cheap fix. If this is really needed there should again be more than one. Obviously this would not be needed for an SDD since they have no exposed electronics.
Overall Review: Overall I am satisfied withe the product. For the small amount it costs I figured I could just toss it out if it was a failure. It would be nice to find a source for the HDD Protective film and additional plastic pin protectors. The pin protectors are needed because that is where the drive ejector hits the end of the drive. The film looked like a standard piece of equipment but searching the internet so far has turned up no sources. In summary, I am happy with the product and would recomment it with the qualifications indicated above.
I was attracted to this product because of the advertised quietness of the fan. I have not yet installed it so I can't actually verify that it is quiet. It also comes with a very different sort of mounting hardware; that is four 3mm machine screws and nuts. I plan to add 3mm washers and lock wsher where appropriate. I expect to install it this weekend.
