Problem with two Intel 5520 processors
Pros: This is a working and feature-rich product.
Cons: This may be related to a configuration issue or to a specific BIOS version, but only 1 Intel Xeon 5520 Nehalem works in this motherboard. If I plug the second in, the system will not post. I am in contact with SuperMicro technical support in order to resolve this issue.
Overall Review: I thought it is important to inform potential buyers that this motherboard has this quirk. I will continue to try to resolve this problem, and I will update once that is done. As the reviewer before me noted, this is otherwise a very good board for the money. Stay tuned.
Died just several days after warranty expiry.
Pros: It is a wonderful machine when it was working.
Cons: Expired right after the warranty ended.
Overall Review: Should I be looking for a programmable self-destruct device in the innards of this machine? This all looks terribly suspicious to me.
Will it hold up?
Pros: In a file server for: 1) source control, 2) NSF or SAMBA type access, 3) file serving.
Cons: None.
Overall Review: Good CPU.
Good, inexpensive processor for server.
Pros: This processor has enabled me to build a small-business server for under $700 with an ASUS server motherboard, 8 gb of ECC Kingston RAM, 2 250-gig RE-3 hard drives, Dynatron heat sink. I don't think I could ever do that with an Intel. In terms of speed, this will be more than enough to handle around 50 transactions simultaneously. This is more than enough to be placed in co-location and install CentOS on it and have a nice production machine.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: Buy this, this is a server processor for under $100 and four cores.
Overcloked to 3.0 ghz.
Pros: Overlocked to 3.0 ghz.
Cons: None.
Overall Review: For 40 dollars, you can get a usable secondary computer chipset. In my case, it is a four-computer development environment to run software applications I will develop. This is a nice chip. I installed CentOS on it, and I am looking forward to years of inexpensive but competent processing.
Overclocked to 3.0 ghz.
Pros: Overclockable to a respectable speed.
Cons: None.
Overall Review: A processor that can be overclocked to 3.0 ghz from 1.8 for 40 dollars.
