Lenovo G570
Pros: * Tremendous bang for the buck in terms of processing power * Hyper-threading, if you’re doing anything video-related * Windows Experience Index is a predictable 5.9 because of the HD, but everything else was over 6 (after a HD Graphics 3000 driver driver update). I didn’t get this for gaming, but it runs them pretty well (really only tested Civ 5) * Very good battery life – I have been getting well over 5 hours for general use * Keyboard is very nice, full-size (which was the impetus for my purchase) and complete with right-hand numpad
Cons: * No HDMI * Lid does not latch * RAM/HDD cover is insanely difficult to get off to install a second stick * No gigabit LAN * Some bloatware, but nothing that balks at removal
Overall Review: First, buy this. Second, get another 4GB stick when you buy this, it's only twenty bucks, well worth it. Third be aware that installing that stick is going to be a giant pain. This does not come with a user manual, so after deciding I clearly wasn't doing it right because it shouldn't be this hard I went online and learned that yes, I was doing it right, and yes it was very difficult to get off. I ended up snapping a tab off... nothing crucial, but I wasn't excited about bits falling off my brand new toy. This and that I don't love that the lid kind of rattles when "closed" due to no latch are the reason for dropping one egg. Also the VeriFace software (facial recognition unlock) is kind of neat but way too slow to be worthwhile.
Fine, but not for HTPC/gaming
Pros: Installs easy, pretty straightforward. Profile and general feel of keyboard is pretty good. Overall pleased with purchase.
Cons: Distance not great, though. Purchased it for my media center PC. The USB receiver sits in an open, unobstructed shelf of my entertainment center about 6-8 feet away from the couch, and it barely registers. Misses every third keystroke or so and I get cursor movement but mouseclicks don't register. End up leaving the keyboard on the entertainment center shelf and using it from there just to press play for something as needed.
Overall Review: Will replace this with a bluetooth rig for my media center and relocate this to my office computer to alleviate some cord clutter.
Great value, forget the sound
Pros: For two eighty shipped you simply can't do better. Decent picture, plenty of HDMI in... not much to say. I like the VGA input and headphone audio output too. I bought this for a low-traffic viewing area and had some legacy A/V stuff to hook up to it so those older connections are nice for me.
Cons: Built-in speakers are awful. Granted as a rule you don't expect much from built-in audio, especially at this price point, but in my experience they are generally passable. These are not remotely passable. It's not just that they aren't powerful, it's that they sound like complete garbage. Tinny, vaguely dislocated, very poor quality sound. I'd rather they not even have boasted built-ins so I could have bought some externals up front.
Overall Review: Not docking an egg for the speakers because you really shouldn't expect anything out of them anyway. Also due to other reviews about the flimsiness of the stand I've been extremely careful with it and I don't expect any problems. Just install it correctly and be gentle with it and don't try and scoot this thing sideways because I can see the stand cracking under even that little stress. Even steady it with your other hand when wiping it down. Just treat it as fragile and you should be fine.
Pros: I was looking for a mic/headset solution equally good for gaming and voice that used 3.5mm stereo inputs so I could use it with my Chromebook. These fit the bill nicely - I can leave the USB adapter in my desktop and tote the phones around with my Chromebook when I'm out and about. They sound great both via 3.5mm and USB, especially noticeably good bass, and are very comfortable to wear for long periods. I've worn them for as long as eight hours without really noticing.
Cons: The only drawback is they bleed sound something fierce. Do not get these for your cubicle - your neighbors 5 rows over will hear you.
No Problems
Pros: I haven't had this long enough to speak to long-term reliability, but I had zero problems with initial setup. Installed 3x 2TB drives in RAID 5, and everything is working swimmingly. Web-based management app is pretty straightforward, and documentation is decent besides. Haven't tested OCE but it looks to also be pretty straightforward. Bundled disc for controller card has Server 2008 and Win7 drivers, which is nice. Scheduled health inspections with email notification on warnings/errors is very nice. Large fan keeps drives at ~80F.
Cons: None so far.
Overall Review: I haven't yet observed the noise complaints other reviewers have mentioned. It wasn't a concern for me in the first place since this sits in my server room, but for what it's worth I can barely hear it over the other (relatively quiet) hardware in the room. Took 9 hours to initialize a 6TB RAID 5 array.
A++ would buy again
Pros: This case is excellent for the money. It's very decent for 3x the money, in fact. Metal is not as flimsy as you'd expect with a cheap case, you won't be accidentally denting this thing. Air flow is good. Case looks nice, no flashy LEDs or window kits (which to me is a pro, I'm a minimalist when it comes to cases).
Cons: No thumbscrews for the side panels, but not a big deal.
Overall Review: Got this case to house a 2tb fileserver. Everything (ATX board, 6x SATA HDDs, a DVD drive and a floppy drive) fits snugly. Requires some patient cable management and a little manual dexterity, but if you're using that many components and are the type that would rather have lots of room to work with, you should probably go with a full-sized tower.
